Red and black…

I tried. Don’t say that I did not try! I did! I did try. I tried to keep them till the festival comes around before opening them up and cutting them…and feasting on them. But everybody kept asking me to try them and tell them what they tasted like…and I did. LOL!!!

Yes, I am talking about the mooncakes that were given to me by a blogger-friend in KL. Nope, they were not the same inside – despite the sticker on Β the box that said “lotus paste double yolk”. This is the Precious Black…

Precious Black 1

…and inside, it looks like this…

Precious Black 2

I think there was one salted egg yolk in it but I could not taste it at all – that distinct taste that salted eggs have.

And this is the Grand Ruby…

…and this is what it looks like inside…

Grand Ruby 2

In both mooncakes, the base was lotus paste and it was very fine and smooth, very nicely done. Other than that, there might be some very slight differences in taste owing to the different ingredients used but I could hardly put my finger on it – to me, they were more or less the same. But what I liked best about them was that they were not sweet – just slightly…and definitely not like some mooncakes where you end up feeling sticky and uncomfortable in the throat owing to the excessive sweetness.

So that’s it! The truth has been revealed…and they did not even manage to survive the 7th Month in the Chinese lunar calendar. This Hungry Ghost has eaten them all up – all gone now. Unfortunately, in this case, it certainly looks like when the Mooncake Festival comes around, I will not have any “real” mooncakes to eat anymore. So how?…Hint! Hint! Hahahahahaha!

  2. I still prefer those traditional ones available from those sundry shops – the white tau-sa!

My favourite is lotus paste with salted egg yolk… Not crazy about the others but may buy a couple and eat to keep the tradition alive.

  8. When is the mooncake festival? I totally missed it, as I did the bak chang one.

Not yet…not yet! The 7th Month (Hungry Ghosts) started around the same time as puasa…so when Hari Raya, that should be the beginning of the 8th Month. Two weeks after that will by the Mooncake Festival – 15th Chinese calendar… So ample time for you to buy some and send to me! Wink! Wink! ROTFL!!! πŸ˜€

  9. i go for the red one. black looks like been poisoned.

Dunno… I heard somebody mentioning that, either in my blog or on Facebook… Take one, whole night cannot sleep! LOL!!!

      1. *pengsan* I never knew Starbucks got sell mooncakes. Tsk! What is this world coming to? Tsk tsk tsk.

Dunno true or not… No Starbucks in Sibu. I heard or read somewhere, somebody going there for mooncakes and I was equally surprised!

  11. LOL… hinting and bodek-ing mode ah? Same like me… oso tengah bodek ppl for mooncakes. πŸ˜€ mebbe if lucky… u also can get free mooncakes, Cikgu. LOL.

  12. The black moon cake was baked or was it snow skin? Looked SO black, almost like burnt! LOL!

Baked! I don’t like the snow skin ones…yucks! You didn’t go to the demonstration at Nikko or some hotel in KL? Vialentino went and he posted on it – maybe you were Down Under in Oz then…

  13. Wow…u still can keep for this long…i guess if I were you, surely wallop when the day i receive it..LOL

Self-control… When eating also, slow slow…one little slice at a time. So expensive now. Not like last time – one whole mooncake – one go habis! Sigh!!!

    1. I wouldn’t be able to eat one whole mooncake at one go. I mean, they’re too sweet… one slice, one slice, wash down with tea is okay for me. You can eat all at one go ah? Wow… hebatnya! LOL.

Can, no problem! So next time you don’t eat lah – waste time only, have to go and brush your teeth. Just give me to me better! LOL!!! πŸ˜€

  14. I don’t really fancy mooncakes but my brother can chomp down two at a time. He’s really a die hard fan of mooncakes.

I wouldn’t say I’m a die-hard fan but I can easily finish one on my own, no problem at all. Two, dunno…never tried. Must control a bit. Hehehehehe! πŸ˜‰

  15. now that i see this picture, i want to eat mooncake pulak =_=|||||

LOL!!! My blog is such a bad influence, everybody says…but they keep coming back for more. LOL!!! πŸ˜‰

  16. yeah I saw ads in tv for the black mooncakes, it looks unique! My parents’ place also the same I mean mooncakes will usually finished before the festival. On the actual day, we’ll be more interested to eat other goodies like the yam & the black color “cow-horn” I’m not sure what it’s called πŸ˜‰

You have a grand celebration on the actual day. At the most, every year, we would just eat mooncakes, not even a special dinner… 😦

  17. Haven’t tried these two types of moon cake but sure looks delicious!

Ohhhhhhh, Pete! You’re back! Where have you been? Gone back to Butterworth? Well, you no problem…can go and buy easily. Maybe, you can make your own even – can cook everything one! Btw, I saw them advertising for Cynthia – cheap leh…and look nice too.

  18. this is the one from bakers cottage right? from the TV commercial it looked so good but from here… not so. inside also don’t look nice one..

Yup…advert, of course, lah! Got touch up like women putting on make up. They say they use shoe polish on roast chicken to give it a better colour! Eyewwww……

  19. Aha! So you can’t resist the temptation eh. Now you do not have that mooncake for the festival. ^_^ The hungry ghost will be hungry.

It is good that the secrets are out and I could see that the secret is good.

Yalor…hungry unless some kind souls give me some more. Hehehehehe!!! Btw, you missed my steamed chicken with balao-balao post… Nice! Yum! Yum!
