I want some…

The first and the last time I had a bagel was in Kuching when somebody opened up a franchise place there many many years ago. They told me it was like our Sibu kompia but I was somewhat disappointed with it. It looked like someone had stepped on the kompia or something – kind of flattened and it seemed to me quite tasteless. Even though I was not a fan of kompia, I thought that at least, it was a little bit nicer.

Well, I’m bringing this up now as my daughter went to this bagel place in Wellington…

Wholly Bagels, Wellington 1

…and boy, wouldn’t I want one of this? Drool! Drool!

Bagel in Wellington

This is a photo of the bagels on the menu card…

…and even minus the filling, I do not see any similarity with our humble kompia.

This one that my daughter had was the classic bagel platter with jalapeno cheddar…

…which cost NZ$7.50.

Frederick, if you are reading this, I would want one like that at the KompiaTiam…or something similar – a slice of turkey ham or beef bacon and cheddar cheese perhaps and after toasting, add the lettuce and tomatoes before serving. I wouldn’t mind paying more for that (but not NZ$7.50! *faints!!! LOL!!!). After all, this little thing that I bought at the WeCare Bakery was RM1.70 each.

My daughter had this together with the bagel – a regular Moccachino with a chocolate fish…

…for NZ$3.30.

I keep telling her not to bother cooking for herself unless it is raining so heavily that she cannot get out of the apartment or she’s so busy that it is more convenient just to whip up a simple meal and eat in the room like these soy sauce chicken drumsticks that she cooked the other day…

After all, many things that they have there are not easily available here, so she should grab the chance to enjoy all of that in Kiwiland in her two years there. I certainly am glad she’s doing that…sometimes.

  1. YUM !! The bagels look to die for. Food in UK can get pretty mundane after a while. it’s either roast, or pies, or the perennial fish and chips everywhere you go 😦 The soy sauce chicken on the other hand looks absolutely delicious swimming in its pool of yummy goodness πŸ™‚

Ya, Melissa said her chicken tasted good. I think it’s the same in NZ. Nothing to get excited about when it comes to food – the usual stuff. That’s probably why she insists on doing her own cooking…even though I keep telling her to go out and eat and not to bother since she would be busy with her studies. I guess she feels it’s very expensive too – she’s always very careful with money. πŸ™‚

  2. wow.. they look ravishing.. bagels.. dont think i have tried those before.. so eating out is also cheap? of course, dont convert to RM.. otherwise expensive.. :p

Ya…never ever convert when overseas or you’ll starve to death! πŸ˜€

  3. Why do they sell half-bagels? Bagels should be round with a small hole in the middle, hence the resemblance to kompia.

Dunno…maybe it’s easier to stuff. I wouldn’t know. The one time I had bagel it was nothing like that. I probably would love these… Yum! LOL!!! πŸ˜€

  4. bagels!!!! T.T ur daughter soooooo syok!!! nice foods n beverages thr! T.T

Ya…so nice to get the chance to study overseas eh? A whole new experience, totally different culture… You’re going back to study, if I’m not mistaken. Going overseas, or doing some twinning overseas programme? Then you’ll get to go over too… Nice! πŸ˜‰

  5. Never tried bagel before, for me any bengali roti will do, of course it must always go with a cup of Kopi “0” kaw kaw, that’s so heavenly.

personally, i am no fan of bread, to me no matter how you make it, it is still bread,, i am sorry.hahahahahha

You’re like me. Not really into bread…unless it’s got really nice filling/stuffing – ham, bacon cheese, egg etc….yum! LOL!!! πŸ˜‰

  6. I’m so lazy to convert the currency into NZ money leh… how much were all these cost actually? Wow… the bagels looks really interesting and I’m tempted to give it a bite! Kiahahaha!^_^

    Have a lovely day!

Ya…they do look good. Should be around RM25.00…and if you go and eat something like that in our cafes and restaurants (in KL), you may even have to pay more than that! Got class bah!

  7. Haha,i brought a bag of kompia back from my MIL,she said from Kuching. To me bagel still can’t compare to kompia n still very yummy n tasty though been in freezer for a few weeks already. Having them for brekkie, today, tomoro n everyday till all ‘licin’! :)! Customs asked wats that, i said unleavened bread! :)!

Ya…that was what I thought the one time I had bagel. Our kompia is nicer…or maybe it’s because we are more tuned to it. Wow!!! So you’re on a kompia feast…. Month after next, you’ll be back here again, or Kuching, at least…for another round. Hahahahaha!!!!

  8. wow! i’d want one too! make it 10. no, 20. noms!!!! >=D

Too bad we don’t have that here…. I guess kompia will have to do. Eat all you want – suituapui2 in the making! Hehehehehehe!!!!

Who knows? I was slim, tall and handsome when I was your age! Now, isn’t that enough to drive you full speed to the gym? Hahahahahaha!!!!!

  9. Bagel, i love bagel!! At my old office, there is one San Francisco Coffee in the building, when i don’t know what to eat for lunch, usually i will go for bagel.

There is one shop at Hartamas shopping mall, selling varieties bagels, nice and but not cheap also.

I’ve never had that in KL or anywhere else other than that one time in Kuching. Hope to get the chance sometime. Probably not much cheaper, I guess? Ada gaya bah! LOL!!! πŸ˜‰

  10. Mel, if you’re reading this, was it cheddar bagel? Plain bagels normally not that yellowish. Love bagels with cream cheese and smoked salmon!

Ya…that’s what I thought. Very peculiar yellow colour. The one I had before was pale white…even paler than kompia…

  11. Bagel? Ok…by just looking at it confirm i havent eat or even seen before…but now seen in the pic edy…isshh..i m one donkey. But i dont really like the bread looking so yellowish….make me have the feeling too much of coloring added..hahhahah

It’s the cheese…jalapeno, whatever that is. Well, Annie says they have bagels at Hartamas. You’re from KL area, can go and try… Jangan tak cuba. LOL!!!

P.S. Ya…just googled it to look at the photos. It seems that jalapeno cheese is very yellow. The muffins they made using that – also as yellow.

  12. perhaps it’s pumpkin bagel, hence the colour…

Dunno. Mel doesn’t know either, just knows it’s jalapeno cheese bagel and the cheese does look yellow in the photos on google…

  13. i just want the kai peh ‘ drumstick’ only…can ah? damn kao delicious looking!

LOL!!! My daughter would be pleased to read this…or are you trying to flatter her/me especially looking at all the mouthwatering food in your reviews? πŸ˜‰

  14. Wooo…so many comments on my bagel πŸ™‚

Btw, the bagel is round, just that when served, they cut it into half and hold them together with a toothpick so that the fillings and the bagel won’t fall apart when you bite into them. You can pick the bagel you want to go with the filling. Bagels themselves can be sweet or savoury as well as the fillings. You decide πŸ˜‰

For those who commented on my cooking, tenkiu tenkiu! Hehehehe…

Of course lah! Takes after the father mah! Wink! Wink! LOL!!! πŸ˜€

  15. Wah bagel, put sambal udang kering…….nice, ha ha ha!

Come…come to Sibu. We have that…in kompia at the KompiaTiam place. πŸ˜‰

  16. YUM! Wait till Ethan sees this! He loves bagels though he has never tried ONE! lol.. all becoz of the influence of Word World! πŸ˜›

Hahahahaha!!! You’ll have to take him to Hartamas then, Annie says they have those there…or come to Sibu for kompia! LOL!!! πŸ˜€

  17. kompia too small to stuff all those… πŸ™‚

Bagels about the same size…or even smaller, like the one I had in Kuching. Well, can have special order…ask them to make them chu-nu-miang size. πŸ˜‰

  18. i can comment that all the photos are look nice but the last pic… it attract my attention! look really nice – yummy!

Can’t understand your comment. You like the last pic or you don’t? The photos not so nice as we were sitting further inside the coffee shop. Not enough light.

  19. I’ve never tasted bagel before. But from the pic above, aww…I would love to have some especially with tuna fillings (do they served with tuna)?? or with bacons. wow…sure delicious.

U r such a good dad. Give her all the freedom and not kedekut at all! Well, the exchange rate are rather high but the experience she gets are all worth it!

I only have one child, so she can have all she has. I am blessed that she’s a good girl, doesn’t spend anyhow – has a good head on her shoulders. I think I have saved enough over the years for her to live comfortably there these two years…and she also has her scholarship money.

  20. i had bagels once in europe and i didn’t quite like it. period.

Oh…oh!!! Dunno whether you’ll like kompia or not then… Hmmmm!!!
