This is the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Sibu where I usually go to for the Sunday masses…
…and this is the new extension – a bell tower that houses a lift which would be a blessing for the elderly parishioners who are not so agile on their feet and for funerals, considering that the main chapel is on the upper level.
The three bells remind me of a song – “The Three Bells” by The Browns which was very popular in the 60’s. I guess it has a nice melody but I would think that the lyrics are somewhat depressing. The first bell was when Jimmy Brown was born, the second bell was when he got married and the third bell at his funeral when he had died.
Come to think of it, some of the songs, though nice and very popular in those days were really depressing. I like the Everly Brothers’ “Ebony Eyes” about a guy waiting at the airport for his bride-to-be but she was killed when the plane crashed…and also their “Take a message to Mary” about a prisoner on Death Row, about to meet his end. Then, of course, there’s this one that I’m sure all of you know – “Tell Laura I love her” by Ray Paterson…about this guy who joined a car race to win money to marry his loved one but he died when “his car overturned in flames” during the aforementioned race.
Another dreadful song which seems to be the favourite of many is “Patches” by Dicky Lee about this girl who committed suicide by jumping into the river…and that karaoke favourite – “Green green grass of home” by Tom Jones isn’t much better either, about this man sentenced to death by hanging and buried ‘neath the green, green grass of home. Eyew…..but gee!!! This is the first time I’ve seen the original video clip for this song…
Gosh! Youtube is really amazing!
Anyway, perhaps you may know of other very nice songs with somewhat morbid and not-so-nice lyrics? I’m sure there are a lot more than these few that I have listed…and one of my all-time favourite songs has got to be Bobby Goldsboro’s “Honey (I miss you)”…
Such a beautiful song, don’t you think? So sad and so touching…and isn’t it so very refreshing to listen to songs where you can hear each and every word, unlike those songs that you hear today?…..Sigh!!!
