This boy…

This boy is one of the nicest ex-students I have ever had. Prior to my retirement, he was one of those involved in the inter-school English language debates and public speaking competitions under my guidance. This photograph was taken at the Sibu airport in 2006, I think, as we were about to leave for the state-level competition in Limbang…

Xavier, presently doing his A-levels under the PPC or Program Pelajar Cemerlang (Excellent-student Programme) in Shah Alam, was standing at the back, third from left. He is currently back in town on a 7-week vacation, so yesterday morning, we met up and went for breakfast at this Farley food court in Salim, quite a distance from the town centre (GPS approximately 2.263453,111.868458).

We had the beef noodles (RM5.00)…

…which was really very nice – a lot nicer than what I had here and here.

I did not like the dip that they gave though – they used sambal belacan. With beef noodles, I would prefer freshly-pounded chilli and ginger plus calamansi lime. In Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, with their ngui chap, they gave the really fiery own-made cili padi (bird’s eye chilli) plus ginger sauce which was so very nice that I bought a bottle home – it was RM10.00 a bottle at the time.

I had my usual kopi-o-peng (iced black coffee) while Xavier had the teh-c peng special…

…which is made up of a layer of wheatgrass juice at the bottom followed by a layer of gula melaka (coconut palm sugar) and teh-c (tea with evaporated milk) on top…plus ice cubes. I have never tried that but it certainly seems to be very popular. According to Xavier, this drink is not available in the peninsula and when his friends came over to Sarawak with him on a holiday…

…they loved it so much.

Well, it is his birthday today…so a very Happy Birthday to you, Xavier and here’s hoping you’ll have a great year ahead and may all your wishes come true.
