Disappointed…

We’ve been here before and my daughter and I had the lor mee and we were so disappointed with it. I did not intend to go there again…but last Sunday morning, every place was crowded and full and actually, since it was Mother’s Day, I thought of going to the newly-opened Secret Recipe next door but unfortunately, it had not started its business for the day.

Then, my missus and I went over to this coffee shop and luckily, we were able to grab a table – still full of plates and stuff…but as they say, beggars can’t be choosers. My missus had the beef noodles the last time and said that it was pretty good, so I decided to have that…

Pahlawan beef noodles 1

In my opinion, I really did not think it was that great…

…for RM4.00 a bowl. I think there are other nicer ones elsewhere and for that kind of money, I can have a whole lot of other nicer things instead.

My missus had their pork noodles, also RM4.00…

Pahlawan pork chop noodles

…and it wasn’t good either. There was one slice of pork chop or something like that on top of the noodles with clear soup. The meat was nothing to shout about and the soup tasted bland. In comparison, the beef noodles were a bit better.

One thing that I thought was strange was that I noticed that this coffee shop seemed to be enjoying bustling business and was always crowded every time I passed by considering that so far, I have not eaten anything that would be worth dropping by for. Perhaps they like something there that I have yet to discover, I wouldn’t know. Can anybody tell me?

  1. maybe the stall’s pretty daughter’s helping out there often? haha

Dunno…didn’t look around. Me, very good one…not mata keranjang! LOL!!! 😉

    1. Not his taste, that’s why he didn’t look around. Nothing attracts his attention bah 😛

What? What?…What is to my taste then? Hehehehehe!!!! 😉

      1. That’s for you to know and for me to discover. Hahahahahaha!!! 😀

LOL!!! So have you discovered it yet? 😀

  2. I believe something is wrong with your taste buds. :p

Maybe…maybe! I eat not nice, other people thinks it is nice. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. But my missus’ friend also told her that the food not nice and expensive some more and yet the place is always crowded.

  3. Auww so cham ah… hmm.. u dint try ask other customers ?? hehehe.. 🙂

No lah…but I did look around to see what other people were eating and I did not see anything that looked nice either. 😦

    1. aiyo.. so cham.. or maybe most of the people go thr is all relatives of them??? hahaha!

Gosh!!! That must be a really productive family! So many relatives! Hahahahahaha!!! 😀

  4. Might as well eat the kampua or the kolok mee? I never like lor mee, whenever i go penang, i never take..

Yalor. Not really a fan of lor mee…but I may take once in a while for a change…and I don’t mind the Hailam lor mee that Eugene took me to try in Penang – pretty nice that one! 😉

  5. Oh yes, a lot of places like that also. No good food and so expensive summore but still overcrowded. And I always wonder why.

The pork and beef noodles look the same to me only the meat on top different.

Nope, taste was different. The beef noodles’ soup had a bit of taste, slightly better…and the meat also nicer. The pork one… Eyew!!!! I hear the lady running the store’s from China…and her sui jiao quite good. Not a fan of sui jiao…so no, thanks!

  6. To me both also look de same..the difference just the meat.

The taste is different…though they look more or less the same – the beef one is comparatively better.

  7. though it looks good in the picture… but still you cannot say that it is good without tasting it…
A good dish is not how you presented it,…it’s how good it taste!

That’s very true. As the say, the test of a pie is in the eating…or something like that! 🙂

  8. Hahahah, i thought Sibu’s noodle was cheaper than that of Penang’s RM4 for that, may be next time you come i show you something similiair with the price going for like RM2.50 to RM3, this i promise you, ok cikgu?

Promise ah? This one’s relatively expensive – there are places where it can be cheaper and one thing here in Sibu – beef is VERY expensive. No fresh beef (“those people” so darn lazy – never slaughter for sale…, got money to earn they don’t want)…so we depend on imported beef from Oz and NZ that costs a bomb…..and some use the smelly ones from India or elsewhere! Ewek!!!

  9. U should look at what other people eat. haha……every person have a different taste bud.

In Seremban, a bowl of beef noodle (from a famous shop) cost RM6. Oooo very pricey le….but the taste, very nice.

RM6 is VERY cheap…compared to this place in KK but tastewise, it is out of this world! Really so very nice, cannot find better easewhere. But price also very attractive! Hahahaha!!!

  10. Maybe the soup is too light. Malaysian likes more flavourful soup.

For beef noodles, I would like very thick and strong broth…but for pork noodles, I don’t mind it nice and clear – but this one…somehow, the recipe’s not really appealling lah! Noodles in bland clear soup…and they fry the slab of pork chop and put on top. Thumbs down!!! 😦

  11. One man’s soup is another man’s *poison* lor..agree with Pete soup not ‘kaw’ enough hehe. tQ

Yup…best would be what they have in KK, Sabah! You’ll never look at beef noodles anywhere the same way again! You can smell it from the car park quit a distance away. So wangi!!! So harum! Yums!!!

  12. It looks good but I like beef noodles which tastes really strong. My favorite choice is still Aho beef noodles opposite Wisma Sanyan. 🙂

I don’t like Aho…as it’s the one with dark soup with chilli sauce inside – so adulterated! I want pure beef soup! Other places here have better ones than this particular one…but they’re nowhere near what I had in KK.

  13. the pork noodles there is quite different from the ones here… have you tried the ones here in KL?

I think I had it once…and also in Penang. Those, I quite like – but not this one. Dunno what style this is – original recipe from China maybe (I heard that the lady’s from China.)…

  14. Not nice meh? But your pictures keep me droolling wor~!!
It’s probably the location that attracts customers, or probably their “hospitality”?! ^-^

Have a nice day to you!

Appearance can be deceptive! LOL!!! 😀 Dunno, it has been open for quite a while now…and business always seems to be good! But come to think of it, at any coffee shop in Sibu, business is generally always good – unless that place really sucks big time! Always packed, people always eating… See my size! Hahahaha!!! 😀

  15. too much clear tasteless broth, by the look of it.
    and
    the noodle looks overcooked?
    Am I right?

But for 4 ringgit!! My god, in Wellington that would be 14 dollars!!

I think 70% of the people in that coffee shop are employee… They employ them to make the vibe looks more busy and successful. HAHAHA

The noodles are ok – never mind if a bit overcooked…not really that firm. They say the yellow noodles that are firmer are filled with boric acid or something. Sibu noodles are generally quite pale.

$14!!! Omigawd! When I went to Auckland a few years ago, it was $8…and I thought it was expensive though the portion was really huge. Then I heard my brother saying that prices of things there had gone up – $10 to $12…and now it’s $14!!! When was I there? 4 or 5 years ago, I think.

  16. Maybe people saw many people at the shop and thought the food would be good.

Ya…or maybe most people not really fussy about what they eat, anything is nice. Like often I heard people saying this was nice here, that was nice there…and when I went to try, it wasn’t really that great.

  17. Cannot beat the Fusan corner one in KK huh? So pricey now though, starts at RM7 per bowl. The fresh and stewed beef combo is RM8.50 if I’m not mistaken.

RM8.50 also worth it. Expensive, never mind…as long as it is really nice and worth it. All the chunks of meat and the tendons…and the rich soup. Oooo…I’m drooling! And the fiery cili padi!!! Out of this world, I tell you…simply out of this world! Gee! I have to make a trip to KK soon…to appease my craving! LOL!!! 😀

    1. A friend watched this AFC show (taste with jason or something), and immediately called up to verify if this is the place that they went to have “ngau chap”. Also wants to go back to KK to makan this. The towkay driving new Mercedes, by the way. LOL!

Saw Jason’s show once…in Sibu! LOL!!! Not surprised that guy’s so rich… He was never there every time I went – just his Filipiono workers running the show. One towkay-neo of a coffee shop here too – dresses very simple…and when knocking off work, you may see her walking out in her leather court shoes…and driving off in her Mercedes Benz – these people really make tonnes of money!

  18. Maybe ur taste buds not working at that time? The beef noodles looks good to me but the pork noodle is a bit unappealing. Can’t even tell tats a pork noodles.

Nope, my taste buds are fine. Maybe I’ve higher standards than other people in general. Hehehehehe!!!!

  19. Maybe it is because of the ambiance of the place. Or maybe those people that you see just work or live nearby and that coffee shop is the most convenient place to go.

Definitely not the ambience – it’s a coffee shop. Probably convenient – parking is easy, no traffic congestion and all that…

  20. Not nice eh? Well it looked nice.. maybe many people go there because they don’t know of any other places with nice lor mee? You should educate them! 🙂

So far…no really nice lor mee here or perhaps I’m not really a fan or lor mee, the same way I’m not that crazy over pan mee either. To each his own, I guess…

  21. hmm.. there’s this shop near the delta mall.. it’s a corner shop.. I used to go there for the ‘gu bak mee’ .. It was pretty good back then… I think it’s called ‘delicious coffee shop’ but I’m not sure if it’s still there.. 🙂

Delta Mall? Delicious? Ah yes…the one below Ah Lung Hair Salon! Never been there – will go and check it out.
