I could have danced all night…

A few posts ago, I posted the video clip of the song, “Do you love me” from the movie/stage musical, “Fiddler on the roof”. Well, as a matter of fact, over 20 years ago, I presented that song at a concert in what I called a musicamime – acting out the song while lip-syncing the lyrics…

TESL Nite 1

My “co-star” was this teacher from Malacca – Nor Aini and it was one of the items in a show that I organised.

It all started when the basic trainees – TESL (Teaching of English as a Second Language) put up a show and I would just say that I could appreciate the effort more than anything else. Well, as with most young people, there was more sound and fury…so on the whole, let’s just say that it was not that great. The Head of the English Language Department walked straight up to me after it ended and said, “Now, you organise another show!”  Good Lord! I was dumbstruck!

Well, we all got down to it and had a blast! Our show started off with a bang with “Ghostbusters”…

TESL Nite 2

Ok! Ok! It was 1986, what did you expect? Lady Gaga??? Humph!!!

There were short sketches and dances – the Sumazau, the Bhangra…and we even did the cha-cha! Imagine those of us in the TESL Specialist Course at the Language Institute in KL, especially the guys with our pot bellies – “The Rolling Bellies” would certainly be an appropriate name for that motley crew. LOL!!!

And there were songs – group singing, duets and solos…

TESL Nite 3

Some of the English teachers in Sarawak, especially those in Miri, may recognise the guy in the photograph. The last time I saw him, he was in the School Inspectorate based in Kuching. Well, that night, he sang George Benson’s “Nothing’s gonna change my love for you“.

They wanted to end with “We are the world” but I thought it was so cliche…and in the end, we closed the show with John Denver’s “Take me home, country roads“…

TESL Nite 4

…and everybody, including the lecturers, went up on stage to join in the grand finale. Any UPM grad out there who can recognise the lady in the pink skirt?

It certainly was a delightful evening and one that I would remember always.
