You don’t know me…

Well, it’s not that I do not know them but honestly, I do not know some of their names. I know ikan kembong but I do not know the names of the others which are more or less the same shape and size…or maybe bigger like these, for example…

Deep fried fish - Malay style 1

I definitely do not know what these are called and I cannot even remember whether I have eaten them before…but they’re very nice – nicer than the ones in the first photograph.

Deep fried fish - Malay style 2

I wonder if they are tilapias…but I do not remember tilapias with ghostly eyes like those.

I can get these fish easily at my regular Bandong food stall – all cooked and ready to eat. Those in the first photograph were RM2 each…and the ones in the second were only RM1 each. I also bought some kembong, if you can remember from my previous post, at RM1.00 each as well.

For one thing, they certainly cook them better than at the Chinese eateries. It seems that they marinate the fish in some really yummy stuff before deep frying. I could detect some kunyit (tumeric) and perhaps a hint of belacan (dried prawn paste) or hay bee (dried prawns). The end result, I must say, is really very nice!

I do not like their fried vegetables though. Somehow, they seem to do it differently too and it does not tickle my fancy. When it comes to vegetables, I like their ulam with sambal belacan…or their masak lemak

Masak lemak nangka muda

These are nangka muda (young jackfruit) and that big pot cost me only RM3.00. I don’t mind their labu (pumpkin) with cangkuk manis as well…

Labu & cangkuk manis

-RM2.00 for that. Perhaps if I go to some other Malay shop or stall, there may be some more that I would love. I wouldn’t know as I hardly ever venture elsewhere…
