Better than…

I first went to this café…

Cafecafe 1

…when it initially opened along Kampong Nyabor Road in the same block as the Academy Book Centre. They said that the mee mamak was very nice but I was not impressed and I did not like the place as when the lunch crowd came in, it was as noisy as in a coffee shop.

I went there again in 2008 on my birthday when my godsons, Elias and Kelvin, and their family invited me there for dinner. By then, it had moved to its present location at Old Street, now called Chew Geok Lin Road. I liked the place and the food that we had that evening but I still did not like the mee mamak. And not too long ago, I went there when a student, now studying in Concord College, UK, held his farewell party there and asked me to join them. Again, the food was good and the place seemed pleasant and cosy.

Last Saturday, my missus took my daughter there for lunch and she had their grilled chicken chop while my daughter chose the fish and chips. When they came home, she was praising what the mother had and regretted that she did not order that. So, I told her we would go again before she would leave for New Zealand…and she could have that.

And so we did…

Cafecafe 2

…the other day for lunch. We were early, so the place was nicely quiet and at least, they had some decent cutlery…

Cafecafe 3

…and my daughter’s freshly-squeezed orange juice (RM8.00) was not that translucent…

Cafecafe 4

I ordered the pasta with creamy sauce and turkey ham (RM15.50)…

Cafecafe 5

…which was very nice and had generous chunks of the ham. However, it did not exactly taste western and I thought it had hints of Asian – but then again, they never said it was a western restaurant and fusion, being in style, you can find all kinds of dishes on the menu.

My daughter got the grilled chicken (RM18.00) that she wanted…

Cafecafe 6

…and enjoyed it thoroughly.

Of course the prices were higher that the cheap stuff that I would usually be more accustomed to…but when you go to places like these, you should expect to fork out a little more. What’s most important is the food and ambience must be good enough and worth that kind of money.

Well, that was most certainly true about the food here and the service was very great though the lunchtime crowd that came in later did get a bit rowdy. The waitress said that grilled chicken was actually on the dinner and weekend menu only but since we wanted it, they would do it just for us. One thumb up for them! And they even gave us complimentary clear soup like when eating kampua noodles in the coffee shop but I would think it would take more than that for them to get another thumb up! LOL!!!

Cafecafe 7

Anyway, my daughter said that she and her mother did not get the soup at all when they were there and besides, they also gave me copies of their Chinese New Year Reunion 8-course set dinner menu (RM350)…and also the various menus available for couples for Valentine’s Day (RM199.99 per couple here and RM299.99 at The Queen next door). I did not see them giving that to anybody else…and my missus and daughter were not given that either that day.

Good grief! Do I look like someone who will go for a candlelight dinner for two on Valentine’s Day…at those prices? ROTFLMAO!!!

  1. For that price for a dinner for two, a home cooked meal would be even more meaningful. With that amount, who knows what you might have on the table for a romantic dinner for two knowing how good a chef you are.

No mood to celebrate…no mood to eat! See tomorrow’s post! 🙂

  2. cz u looked like a boss and ordered like a boss…… In fact u r really a boss, hahaha

Me a boss? I like bossing people around, that part I would say is true…but boss as in loaded, lots of money – definitely not me! Come to think of it, you have that boss look too! Hehehehehe!!!

  3. They know you’ll blog about that place one way or another so they alert all their staff of one friendly neighbourhood retired teacher who fits the description of Sui and Tua Pui just in case he decides to pop in for lunch or dinner 😀

LOL!!! Don’t think they know me. Not familiar with the people at that cafe…but they’re very friendly – always smiling and acknowledging one’s presence.

  4. why the waitress gave u and not your wife and daughter? Cos u have the look ma.. the towkay look, one who looks rich, prosperous… that is why! it is a compliment when the waitress gave u that.. RM18 for that grilled chicken was a bit expensive no doubt..but as long as she loves it.. who cares!! hahahaaaaa..

Hehehehehe!!! Towkay look, but only looks rich and prosperous – pocket kosong! Ya…doesn’t matter – usual hotel restaurant price, I would think – here, may be more expensive in the bigger cities. But it’s ok…she’ll be flying off next week… As long as she enjoys feasting on what we have here.

  5. Hiya, godfather^^

Not you…somebody else by the same name, and not the Mafia godfather, mind you! Me nice decent guy, not like gangster! LOL!!! 😀

  6. 😦 Valentine’s Day? Dun even dare remind me about it, or I’ll send heads rolling! 😦

Why? Aren’t you going to have a romantic candlelight dinner with your hubby…and he will treat you to his exclusive Chippendale performance? Muahahahahahaha!!!! 😀

      1. Sigh… one sonnet for you…

O me! what eyes hath love put in my head
Which have no correspondence with true sight:
Or if they have, where is my judgment fled
That censures falsely what they see aright?
If that be fair whereon my false eyes dote,
What means the world to say it is not so?
If it be not, then love doth well denote
Love’s eye is not so true as all men’s: No,
How can it? O how can love’s eye be true,
That is so vex’d with watching and with tears?
No marvel then though I mistake my view:
The sun itself sees not till heaven clears.

O cunning Love! with tears thou keep’st me blind
Lest eyes well-seeing thy foul faults should find!

That’s nice!!! Rather remorseful though…. It’s the same in every marriage – to make sure it lasts, keep one eye closed…and if necessary, both!

  7. wow the turkey ham is really chunky!
ive yet to taste turkey ham like that in kch nor penang yet! and at that price! 😀

Yes, I was amazed! Was expecting thin strips and bits of the ham! It was good…

Debak, if I’m not mistaken, is somewhere around Sri Aman – halfway between Sibu and Kuching. Right now I’m not really sure when I’ll be back in Sibu. The ministry called again this morning changing my daughter’s departure date to NZ from 8th to 10th…so I may have to change all our air ticket bookings all over again…and if there are no seats KL>Sibu, my missus and I may be stuck in KL over Chinese New Year. Will see how things go! SIGH! SIGH! SIGH! My head really pening!!!

    1. U wan angpow ah, kawan? i give u… but inside empty wan… u put money inside urself, can bo? LMAo

Got…during my childhood days – RM1.10. So if we pressed, got hard hard thing inside (The coin lah!!! What are you thinking? ROTFLMAO!!!), we would feel so disappointed! Kecil2 already pandai! Hahahahaha!!! 😀

  10. Cikgu… I cooked chicken last nite. Din become negro. Ahahaha…so happy! 😛

Ah! Like that…if I get stuck in KL over Chinese New Year, can go to your house makan lah!!! Hahahahaha!!!! 😀

    1. After CNy can la… lol… CNY oredi at kampung… to rot and berkarat whole day. *SULK*

Sob! Sob! Nobody wants me around for CNY!!! Will be stuck in KL till the 1st day – 14th night flight!!! I’ve already rescheduled my return flight – none available from 11th to 14th. Daughter’s leaving on the 10th now…

      1. If I can stay in KL during CNY, I’ll be crying for joy. Sobsob… on the eve oredi get sumbat-ed to rot at MIL’s lerr…. Eh? dotter leaving on 10th? not 8th ah? Nvm, cikgu… make the best of the situation… spend more time with her. LOL… 😀

I wanna meet you up, but not this time around. You got to spend quality time with your girl. LOL… 😛

Anyway… i go back to my prayer… : Oh, God, please grant me serenity for the things I cannot change… huhuhu 😦

Ya…I need to say that prayer too…before those ministry people drive me up the wall!

  11. i din say must got money in angpao ler little girl…don tink u married d sibeh lan see woi…lol

    i noe i ugly n fat n old n u married d coz u so pretty… 😛

btw angpao doesnt mean must got money as empty angpao gv more blessing than those got money… 😉

Like dat kah? In that case, I change my mind liao – give empty ang pao also, follow Cleffairy! Hahahahaha!!!! 😀

  12. The grilled chicken nicely presented….love all the veggies in it! Wah, for the Valentine dinner price, can get one small roast piglet…..then everyone in the family can eat….ha ha ha!

Cleff : didn’t turn out to be Negro chicken?……This time Mat salleh chicken ah? LOL!

Yalor….can have buffet party at the house and ask a few friends to join!!! So expensive…but you can bet the house will be full when the time comes – lots of guys want to impress their girlfriends! Not me…pass my time liao! LOL!!! 😀

      1. LOL… got switch on lah… lol…this time, I agak agak… never follow the ‘instruction’ and use nose. LOL… =.= result alot better thn the damn recipe!

        LOL!!! 😀

  13. Cafe cafe…ok heard a lot about this cafe. Noted down, i will try it out when i go back next round. 🙂 Ah! Should meet you at this cafe, so the owner will give me better service and maybe some free soup? hahahahhahah

I was wondering, you all having western food but how come serve you clear soup lei???? hahahhahahahhahahhahaha

Maybe the owner do read your blog, see you do free advertisement for them, that’s why they better treat you good. 😛

Ya…this is one place that you should check out. Seems very popular, lots of people like to go there. Yalor…it would have been more appropriate if we were given cream of mushroom soup or something like that! Dunno lah! Dunno who reads my blog – especially those who never comment.

  14. I really don’t like “neither here nor there” (konon fusion) restaurants.

Ya…imagine lamb chop with sambal paku on the side. This one’s not true fusion – but you can get local delicacies, western favourites, Thai, Italian…. Some are really very nice! But I seldom go there… More a place of the younger crowd like those yuppies! Me old liao… LOL!!! 😀

  15. Even after lunch, I still find the picture of grilled chicken so enticing 😀

It was nice. My daughter loved it. I tried a bit and thought it was worth having too.

  16. Coz they know you’ll blog about it kot.? Special service for VIP. 😀

Dunno. Maybe they saw me taking photos of the food. Nice way to get special treatment, snap…snap…snap…from all angles. If got DSLR, even better! Hahahahaha!!!!

  17. coz u have that man of distinction/big spender look…LOL!

I love eating at cafe2. the prices may be a bit steep compared with other places but i love the ambiance and the service. Did u try their banana cream pancake? That is my fav (even tho’ i had to request that they skip the peanuts coz i’m allergic to it). 😦

Ya! the place is nice – something like the Junk in Kuching, maybe more spacious and also with the creaky wooden stairs going here and there. Ah! I think I would love that pancake dish. Nobody ever told me about it. The ice cream pancake at Garden also nice.

Ooi!!! You’ve seen me before – simple, old man…t-shirt and shorts, doesn’t look like he can afford to foot the bill! The only thing – very fat! Where got big spender look? Hahahaha!!!! 😉

    1. yeah…u should go and give it a try…then give your verdict here…

I’ve never blogged about it as usually, by the time i realized that i should blog about the pancake, it’s halfway gone (or all gone) LOL!

Hahahahaha!!! Will keep that in mind on my next visit.

  18. i heard debak at engkilili…i heard that name but duno whrebout…lol

    1. Aiyohh… me and Cikgu where got rich? Ahahahahaha…. eiyerrr… u sounded exactly like Cikgu! Ahahahaha!

Me, definitely not… You, I don’t know! Hehehehehehe!!! Ya, he’s also beginning to sound like me! LOL!!!

      1. Me? of course not rich…slaving for my boy all these while. Sigh… wud to do… anak come first! LOL…you’re also like H1N1 lerr… so contagious…if you got frequent my blog there, you will know how much he imitate u. Can pengsan! Ahahahaha!

Got lah! I saw already. He memang geng with you these days – so many comments. Hehehehehehe!!!

  19. A hint. Asking you to bring your wife for a romantic valentine dinner. I think you cook at home and lit candle is much cheaper la. And valuable too!

We’ll be in a plane flying back from KL to Sibu that night… Love is in the air! Hahahahahaha!!!!

    1. Wow!! romantic! romantic!!! and have in-flight food to celebrate Valentine. hahah…..Can ask for wine somemore (if not mistaken). All included in the air tix right?

Air Asia – the cheapo airline! Don’t dream! MAS did not have any seat available when I booked in mid-January…so no choice. Now stuck with it as they do not allow refunds!!! Luckily can change the dates.

  20. creamy sauce and turkey ham? War..I will try this if we have this here. War…it’s so lucky to be your daughter huh! Can eat, and eat…and eat…and eat. :p

Only have one child – so give her everything I’ve got – whatever she wants! Makes me happy too!

  21. you certainly look like someone who enjoys food, & they are not fooled by your simple attire – they know the sarawak towkays dress just like that!!

Maybe they judge according to my shape and size…but they do not realise that appearance can be deceptive.

  22. Why did they give only you & not your wife & daughter?
Coz they are gay & they only want men in the house.

Oh? I thought that would be next door? By virtue of its name – for queens only! 😉

  23. u stay thre long oso nvm ler coz u rich or else as from that rich girl cleffairy… 😉

She already cabut, gone back to kampong…I call thi kong (sky grandfather) to help, also no answer liao!!! LOL!!!

  24. tee kong cant help as u din buy lottery as he wil help gv u some xtra cash.. 😉

I bought…and bought – tak kena, so give up liao lor!!! 😦

  25. omg, the prices for the valentine dinner is shockingly EX! and this is in sibu nonetheless…god knows what price in places like kl and penang then:0

Ya…they are cashing in on the occasion and believe you me, there will be a lot willing to fork out the cash!!!
