Christmas shoes…

What is the meaning of Christmas? Is it a time to party all night long and drink yourself silly? The time for Christmas turkey, pudding and pies? The time to spend and shop till you drop?

When we were small, we would look forward anxiously to Christmas as my mum would buy us new clothes and new shoes…and we would receive lots from presents from our uncles and aunties…and we would visit one another and there would be cakes and biscuits and aerated (fizzy) drinks. In a way, the new stuff symbolises the new Hope for mankind, the presents – the gifts of the Magi (or the Three Wise men)…and the feasting and rejoicing is to commemorate that special day when Jesus Christ was born.

I happened to stumble upon this Christmas song on youtube. The following extract is taken from this website:

The song “The Christmas Shoes” is a touching song making us realize the true essence of Christianity. Christmas is a time not only for joy and celebrations, but also the time for sacrificing our needs to make others happy. The beautiful yet heart wrenching lyrics make us feel the pain and the anxiety of the young boy out to buy the last gift for his mother.

The Christmas Shoes is a universal story of the deeper meaning of destiny, of sharing humanity and carries an important message, that sometimes the smallest things in life can make all the difference so don’t wait for big, materialistic opportunities in life. Open your eyes and you will believe in miracles!

Personally, I think everyone should watch the video clip and listen to this beautiful Christmas song, but please do not blame me should it make you cry buckets…

I knew I’d caught a glimpse of heaven’s love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about.

Perhaps, in the midst of all the festivities, we too should stop and spend a bit of time to think about what Christmas is actually all about.

  1. Harrrloooo, Good morning, Sir!

Cikgu, do you remember this song? I used to listen to it wif my dad…

When we were small and Christmas trees were tall
We used to love while others used to play
Don’t ask me why but time has passed me by
Nothing seems to be the same old way

Now we are tall and Christmas trees are small
And you don’t ask the time of day
But you and I our love will never ever die
And guess who’ll cry come first of May

The Apple tree that grew for you and me
I watched the apples falling one by one
And I recall the moment of them all
The day I kissed your cheeks and you were gone

Now we are tall and Christmas trees are small
And you don’t ask the time of day
But you and I our love will never ever die
And guess who’ll cry come first of May
And guess who’ll cry come first of May

If I’m not mistaken, the Gibbs brothers sang this song, and I liked it so much, cuz it reminded me of the Xmas I used to have with my own family. It was never about pressies and whatnot back then. It was about togetherness as a family. We’ve always preferred a quiet Xmas, but my Xmas is all but gone since I got married, cuz not all of my in laws celebrate it. Yet, need to give face and have dinners wif em, cuz Xmas are ‘holiday’ where we always have to eat at some blasted restaurant. Every year I never failed to give pressies to em… and yet, get nothing in return and sometimes, not even thank you.

Dammit. You make me miss my daddy with this entry. Sobs. I go kacau him now. (oh, shit… SP is Sunday.. working day… cannot call to kacau, else will kena hentam! Guess will have to wait til nite den)

My cousin, kpenyu who used to comment here, always says that if you want to give somebody something, just give and never expect anything in return…as more often than not, you will be disappointed. I couldn’t agree more. And yes, I will always remember that song – in July 2007, we were sending my daughter to SP for registration in the teachers’ institute there…and we went shopping at CS. At one point, I was sitting there resting while my missus and daughter went round the shops…and the song came out on the PA system and I felt the emotions surge in me…and maybe shed a tear or two -my daughter had grown tall…and was leaving home for the first time. She’ll be leaving for NZ in February – even further away…

    1. I think because they are mother and daugther :P. Forgot to log out before commenting… hehe~

As in the words of John Lennon’s song, “…what have you done? Another year over, a new one’s just begun!”

  3. I will b celebrating christmas without family again, argh…. Miss the time when my family used to go out for dinner on christmas eve to celebrate christmas eve and my parent’s wedding anniversary then go to church the next morning…. Tat’s a nice song…

How many years already?…Your parents got married on X’mas Eve? How nice! Celebrate every year – two birds with one stone!…Ya, love the song and the story! Really touching!

  4. Christmas is definitely my favourite celebration. It never really was about the fun and festivities but rather the blissful feeling of having everyone, friends and family under one roof in shared camaraderie if only for one night πŸ™‚

    p.s :Really touching song *sniffles

Yes, a time for loving and caring…and where best to start if not at home? Did the song bring tears to your eyes too? Really sad, isn’t it?

  7. Christmas is very special I think. It is so much different from the other festivals celebrated here in Malaysia. πŸ™‚ I think it has this soothing effect on me.

Yes, that special peaceful feeling… Other festivals mostly feasting and fun and a whole lot of noise!

  8. I just decorate my X’mas tree yesterday..not 100% complete but still have a bit here and there…can’t wait to X’mas….
I watched that movie before…..very touching… watching that video clip… lagi sad….that’s why i always remind myself that i should count my blessing and be blessed with wat i have in life…

I just love X’mas…the feeling is nice and peaceful… πŸ™‚

Dunno why but X’mas makes me sad…or kind of depressed! 😦

  9. i think christmas has become very mainstream and popularised these days…it’s almost completely lost it original religious roots and meaning and is only celebrated as such by devout christians..others celebrate it like any other commercial holiday such as valentine’s.:-)

I agree. It’s over-commercialised – gift-buying and over-spending…and the partying and merry making seem to be the priority among many. The true meaning of Christmas has taken a back seat…

  10. I’ve ordered the Turkey!!!! hehehe

Spare a thought for the poor and the starving…like me! LMAO!!! πŸ˜€

    1. Well, u are more then welcome to come dine with us for xmas.

Airfare, hotel inclusive? Christmas, a time for charity! Help the poor – me! Hehehehehe!!!!

      1. I’ll definitely pay… if u use Bus Asia! hahah. As for hotel, no need la… plenty of empty rooms in the house. FOC.

Humph!!! I think I would just stay at home… 😦
