Another day…

It was just another day – my birthday, the 2nd of December. Tradition has it that we should have mee sua (our version of the longevity noodles) in chicken soup cooked with Foochow red wine…and so we did, first thing in the morning…but we do eat that quite frequently even on days when nobody’s celebrating his or her birthday.

I did not get a card from my old friend, Vivien, this year. She would send one without fail over the years…but not this time. I do hope she is o.k. But I did get a card…

…from Mandy in KL. It certainly was a pleasant surprise when the postman delivered it…

Birthday card 2

Thanks a lot, Mandy. That’s so very nice and thoughtful of you. Luckily, it arrived on the actual date – knowing how unreliable the snail mail service is these days.

I went out and bought myself a cake…

…my favourite Japanese baked cheese cake…

…that is not too sweet and rich enough – just nice! If you’ve eaten Uncle Miki‘s, that’s what it is like. I don’t know if they still do but I’ve seen them selling it at Isetan supermart at Lot 10 in KL…and at the entrance of Cold Storage at Centrepoint, Singapore where we first bought one to try many many years ago and loved it very much.

My missus was working and would not be home till late around 5.30 to 6.00, so I thought we would just go out some place and have a quiet dinner. But she came home with these – Thai-style chicken…

…and Japanese tofu…

The canteen operator at the canteen in the Sibu Hospital is moonlighting and offers some catering services to anyone outside who may be interested for home parties on birthdays and other occasions. The two chicken dishes cost only RM15.00  each and the tofu was RM10.00. That was really very cheap – the dishes were HUGE and they tasted good too!

So, that was it…another birthday has passed and hopefully, there be many more. Thanks to all of you who commented on the birthday post to convey your greetings…and also the many on Facebook…as well as those who sent smses starting from midnight…up to the last ones around 9-10.00 p.m…and thank you to Kpenyu who phoned THREE times throughout the day! That means he can stay at my house when he comes to Sibu, with food provided plus taxi service from and to the airport! LOL!!!
