Once, I was having the set lunch at a local hotel and there were a few slices of it in the complimentary soup. Initially, I thought they were ginger…but later, I found out what they actually were and ate up those few slices. They actually tasted quite good. But later, I came down with what I figured was gout.
We very rarely eat it. In fact, I can safely say that we never eat it anymore. We have not had it for a long, long time. I remember when I was young sometimes my mother would cook it in with pork in tomato sauce and at other times, she would put it in her sayur rebus (kampung-style boiled vegetable soup). Then my father had some problems with a nerve as a result of an extracted tooth and everytime he had it, the pain would come back. So we stopped eating it altogether, along with a whole lot of other things.
My missus loves it very much though. I saw some at the Bandong stall the week before last…and I told her but added that I did not buy for her to eat as she had this recurring back pain and all kinds of pain all over. She did not look too happy, so when I saw them selling it again, I bought RM2.00 worth of it for her to eat…
I’m talking about bamboo shoots. What is it about them that will cause pain? People say that we should not eat too much kangkong or paku either as these are “cold” and may lead to rheumatic pain…and nuts and beans including bean sprouts (taugeh) can trigger off gout attacks because of the high protein content. Then they also claim the kuchai (chives) will bring out all past sicknesses that one may have suffered from before while lobak putih (white carrot/radish) will “wash away” whatever medicine you have taken and render them ineffective. Personally, I eat most of them but in moderation as I’m not really a fan of any of them. Do you know of any others that should be avoided?
Well, if I may digress a bit from the topic, while I was at the Bandong stall that day, I also bought RM2.00 of this buah kedondong sambal…
It was very nice and certainly contributed towards stimulating one’s appetite. But I would prefer buah emplam though.
Generally, fish is a bit expensive at the stall. They sell this kari ikan bawal hitam (black pomfret curry) at RM2.00 a piece and it is not a very big piece…
…but then again, fish is expensive these days and getting somewhat scarce.
This is expensive, that is expensive. You can’t eat this and you can’t eat that! What is there that is left for us to eat? Sigh!!!
good morning.. first one here i hope by the time i finished this comment..
the bamboo shoots thingy? it smells when i buy it but when put into the mouth, it actually taste good.. my canteen fella used to ask me whenever i buy this, “u also know how to eat this” … sure i do… anything i like, i wallop.. but now that u said got angin, i better refrain… once a blue moon perhaps it is ok.. anything eaten in small small portions, it is alright! otherwise torturing man…
Torturing?…So it causes you pain too? It’s nice, very sweet – the fresh ones, I mean. I can’t stand the canned ones – very smelly!
there’s no stopping you, is there, whether they are detrimental to your health? what’s the fun of enjoying food if we can’t eat them?
There is! If it causes pain, I will stop eating it right away – like bamboo shoots…and drinking beer! LOL!!! Otherwise, I will just go on eating even if it’s expensive. After all, we do not eat every day… Once in a blue moon shouldn’t be too bad.
maybe just take moderately is okay la. dun take too much later hospitalized susah .. he he he
Yes, moderation is the key! Anything in excess is no good e.g. wine…
I don’t like bamboo shoot. Heheh! Sometimes I accidentally bite into them, will try to chew as fast as possible and swallow. Hahaha! 😀
The fresh ones are ok…nice and sweet and crunchy. It’s the canned ones that I do not like…
*blink* *blink* good gracious, didn’t know eating too much kangkong, paku (referring to midin izzit?), nuts and beans, and lobak putih can cause such ailments… >.< but i heard from my mom that lobak putih can 'purify' cooking gas from our body that we got from the food or sth, dunno valid or not also =P
Some people say lobak putih is good as it detoxifies. Maybe that is why the old folks say it cleanses away all the medication that you are taking… I like it cooked in clear soup with lots of pork bones!
owh…i din know about that…i always eat the bamboo shoot and kangkong though, always finish up the whole thing whenever my mom cooks. huhu…mebe not yet feel the effect…LOL.
Still very young…no rheumatism, no arthritis yet… Hahahahahaha!!!
eat my special gourmet roast beef sandwich.
eggplant for example. one of my fave. but my mum said egglant is ‘night shade’ plant, smth like that. so if u have an open wound injury dun eat it
Eggplant? Brinjal?…Not my favourite. I only eat that steamed and ulam with sambal belacan. Don’t like it cooked…not even tempura eggplant!
One doctor said, a quarter of what you eat is to keep you alive, the other three quarters to keep the doctors alive! Oop… I am a firm believer of this quote lately, somemore it’s from a doctor!
Then there was this doctor who called a plumber who tinkled here and there and the job was done. He asked for 50 bucks and the doctor exclaimed, “What? I am a doctor and I never made that much!!!” The plumber quietly replied, “Neither did I when I was a doctor!” LOL!!!
I guess if we read all the recommendation by all the experts around, ended up breathing also will kill us! Haha! So I just don’t bother to read much of it. Just eat what I like and not too much. I think that will be ok then.
More vegetables for me lately.
I guess so… As long as we do not overdo it, we should be fine. Like people eating kampua everyday! Good grief!!! No wonder they end up with blocked arteries and what not…
Your blog is making me hungry!
Hi! Long time no see… Hungry? Hehehehehehe!!!!
If your doctor/ friends tell you that you can’t eat this/that, change your doctor/ friends! hahaha….
Pretty soon, you will not have any doctor or friend left…or vice versa! LOL!!!
hmm.. cook maggi mee and eat.. haha..
hen can save.. but not healthy la.. =P
…and you end up spending a fortune on your doctor’s or hospital bills! Penny wise, pound foolish! LOL!!!
da black pomfret curry is considered cheap niao! in my uni, one tiny small piece cost rm1.50 what da hell! and i can see there’s few pieces in your bowl!!!
we can eat what we want, just that in moderate portion.
Cheap kah? I thought at RM2 per piece, it was very expensive. One bowl was around RM12.00… Ya, we have to be moderate in what we eat…and also in whatever we do!
My mom have been complaining all the time about her high blood problem whenever she eat bamboo shoot. what to do.. sedap ba..
Like my missus. Pain here, pain there…still want to eat. She said, “Take medicine lor! Don’t eat…also pain!”
Haiyo…
So cheap still want to complain!
Shut up & eat!
Where got cheap? The fish curry…so expensive! RM2 for such a small piece! Old pensioner must take care of the pennies (Correct spelling!) and the pounds (Pound sterling, not the weight measurement! LOL!!!)will take care of themselves!
i love heaty as my body scared of cold n tat y i love wild animals so hearty especially lizard cook with ginger… ;
tat bamboo shoot i heard oso n tat y i din eat as my left knee got “hong sip” if weather too cold…

No wonder you always on heat one! Hahahahaha!!! Wah! Your knee masuk angin kah? Your head no? “Thau hong”? ROTFLMAO!!! Hey…next week, no need go back Kuching – take bus to Sg Petani and we meet there lah. Call ur “kai mah” and drag her along…
Mmmm, I have heard about the effect of bamboo shoots…is it really that bad?
I dunno whether it’s psychological or what but I had the pain after eating those few slices in the soup. My missus, of course, can’t tell. She had body aches every day… Old woman liao! LOL!!!
yeah sometimes people say a particular veggie is not good for this & that but I guess eat it moderately will not harm. Anyway, I love that fish curry 🙂
Yes, it was very nice…
Better control o bro. You are not young anymore lor. LOL 😀
Young at heart…very young at heart! Hahahahahaha! But frankly, I do not intend to live that long! Not easy being old….and no fun either!
Bamboo shoots is “cold” vege? I love bamboo shoots and like it to cook with tomatoes sauce. So so long i never had bamboo shoots, i think if i take it now, i will feel pain all over my body? Age is catching up.
Will put this in my list, next time go home must ask my mum to cook me this.
Ya…not easy to get fresh ones, Have to try at the jungle produce market here. My mum also used to cook it with pork and tomato sauce. I don’t take it anymore…scared that it may lead to all kinds of pain! But my missus loves it and just can’t resist! She’ll buy and cook once in a while…and eat it herself.
