The White Rajahs ruled Sarawak from 1841 to 1946 before it became a British colony after the Japanese Occupation in the Second World War.
When I was in England in 1994, one of our lecturers brought us to this place called Sheepstor in Devon…
There was a little church there – St Leonard’s and I signed the visitors’ book inside…
Some of you may be familiar with the Sarawak crest in the photograph…and there, one could also see the plaque showing the Brooke family tree and also something on the history of the White Rajahs…
There was even a bust of the first White Rajah, Sir James Brooke…
…and beside the cathedral lay the family burial grounds where one could see the graves of the White Rajahs. This is a photograph of the headstone at the grave of Sir James Brooke – “Rajah of Sarawak”…
