After all these years…

I remember when I was small, there were two most popular restaurants in Sibu – Hock Chiu Lau and Yien King. I think there was another one in the block of shophouses facing the old bus station, same row as Jin Hin that used to sell Vespa scooters, if I’m not mistaken – I can’t remember the name now…but I did not like that one. Yien King is long gone now while Hock Chiu Lau, I think, is still in business. One of the chefs has opened his own somewhere across river and he named it “Sin (New) Hock Chiu Lau“.

I do not exactly recall when the Capitol Restaurant came into the scene. At one time, it was in the middle of the block of shophouses behind the Sibu Post Office. But I do remember that its proprietress, Ah Sap Chay, was famous for her Hainanese chicken rice and roast duck. Eventually, it moved to its present-day location and changed its name to the New Capitol Restaurant and it has kept that name until today even though it is no longer new.

To be honest, I hardly ever go there. The last time was for the Teachers’ Day luncheon 2008 hosted by the centre where I am teaching. I missed the one this year as I was in KL at the time so I was unable to go. For one thing, parking in that vicinity is such a pain. Anyway, I dropped by the other night with my friends but unfortunately, they do not serve their renowned Hainanese chicken rice at night, so we had this fish maw soup…

…and this plate of veg…

We also ordered their roast duck that took ages to come out…

As a matter of fact, we had finished everything – the soup, the veg and even the rice – by the time it was served. The other two dishes were nothing to shout about, but the duck was very nice – not the usual kind of sweet and often tough Hongkong-style roast duck.

I guess that was half a bird…but I would consider it all a bit expensive – RM47.00 for three persons, inclusive of drinks, a saucer of braised peanuts once we were seated and hot towels at the end of the dinner. We never asked for those extras, so actually if they wanted to give us those, they should be complimentary! Don’t you all think so? Tsk! Tsk!
