It’s a holi-holiday…

It’s going to be a long weekend here in East Malaysia with the Pesta Kaamatan in Sabah on the 31st of May and the Gawai Dayak Festival in Sarawak on the 1st of June, so all of you West Malaysians can eat your hearts out! Tuesday, the 2nd of June, is also a public holiday…so if they are not getting an extended leave, they would only be back at work by Wednesday.

Here, I would like to wish Selamat Hari Kaamatan to my blogger-friends in Kota Kinabalu – Melbie and Mandy, and also to Mammamia and Phil and all the others in the Land below the Wind who are celebrating this festival…

Gawai greeting 1

…and to all my Dayak friends and relatives – Cibol, Mar and Fred (Ewek 83), Colin, Chris Anakapai, Buwau98 (Are you celebrating? Not too sure!), Sumuk, Aaron, Guztyne, Louis aka LJ, Gundot and wtf, Lindy, TOC and their families,Β

Selamat Hari Gawai
Gaya guru gerai nyamai
Lantang senang nguan menoa

Gawai greeting 2

For the uninitiated, that is the way to wish them in the Iban language a Happy Gawai Festival, long life and good health and prosperity.

I hope I have not left anyone out. If I have, I assure you that it is purely unintentional. My apologies and the greetings of the season are hereby extended to you too. To the rest, happy holidays…and don’t drink and drive!Β

  2. Hahahahaha!!! That’s Digi advertisement! (Picture of the girl) πŸ˜›

Yeah…and the greeting too! Don’t want to “borrow” anything from flickr anymore, otherwise the owners of the photos will come and blast me – not that their photos are so very nice! Chesh!

  3. SELAMAT HARI GAWAI TO U ALL IN THE EAST… greetings from IPOH, Perak…

Thanks… KIV – this will be a good time to visit the state, if ever you’re planning to come this way…

  4. Enjoy your holidays with Sasa! Not sure if I will go Sibu after Gawai.

Sure will, she’s on the way KLIA-Sibu… Hope you’ll be here…and btw, I just posted you a link on Facebook.

  5. eating my heart out alraedy 😦

but we will b having a holiday nxt monday..yay πŸ˜›

Next Monday? Agong’s birthday? Isn’t that the following Saturday…and public holidays on Saturdays are not replaced by Monday, only those in Sundays?

  6. Enjoy your holiday! I will be back to Sibu in few hours’ time. Back back here on 1st June! Poor planning – miss the festival here, and miss the festival home! Aiya!

You too! I heard from rubberseeds they’re having a bloggers’ meet at Lot 10 tonight…but my girl just got home this morning, so I would rather spend quality time with her.

  7. Yeah. It’s holiday soon. two more days to go and can have four days holiday. So nice. Many Iban friends already took leave and balik kampung liao. Start to prepare for the big celebration.

What are ur plans? 7.30 tonight at Lot 10, some bloggers are getting together. Perhaps you would like to join them? Rubberseeds will be there…

  8. No fireworks display during Gawai. Only during CNY. Quite boring

You should have saved some… LOL!!! Thank God for small mercies! I hate those fireworks and firecrackers!

  9. We in Sabah take offence to the greetings from Ipoh. We don’t celebrate GAWAI in this part of the EAST. Omg

Now, you clare’s law-eya…want to cari pasal!!! If Dayak, north-south-east-west…also they celebrate!!! You can grumble that she missed out the Hari Kamataan though – that would be a valid line of argument! LOL!!!

  10. after gawai we go makan….selamat ari gawai..

Why after Gawai? Gawai nothing to eat kah? Pansoh babi hutan got or not? Drool!!! Hahahahaha!!!

  11. I am talking about reading and understanding. Your post is so cyrstal clear….still the ignorance and assumption took over..omg omg..need to go ahtor stall opp Penang bridge to eat ah kow s’wak laksa now.

I guess there is some truth in the proverb: “A little learning is a dangerous thing!” Kena tembak from all corners! Kesian…

  12. Aiyo..fyi we don’t celebrate “Hari KAMATAAN” ..hari wink wink here too…that’s a swear word you know. It’s KAAMATAN.
How ah..one English no good and one BM no good..both forgiven la.

Typo lah! The spelling’s correct in the post proper! Humph!! And I don’t think it’s BM. I would think it’s Kadazan or something. You would know better since you’ve been over there all these years but then, you’re pendatang haram…so you may not! LOL!!!

  13. I am at the West Malaysia side, missing Gawai for the third time in my life. 😦

What to do? Depending on where you’re based. But you can always have your own celebration with your friends over there!

  14. Selamat Hari Kaamatan & Selamat Hari Gawai to all STP blog readers!

I quickly added to your greeting in case that fella’ comes in again and makes noise… Two similar yet different festivals – one in Sabah and the other in Sarawak…

  15. ya,you are right, dont drink and drive, and have a happy holiday to you too..

Yup…with all the home-brewed “tuaK’ (Sarawak) and “tapai” (Sabah), it’s best to stay off the roads as far as possible! Thanks, my daughter’s home!!! Sure we’ll have a great holiday!

  16. Happy Gawai to all the gawai friends, happy holidays to you STPn enjoy your time with your daughter!Holidays in Msia now?How long? Happy wedding anniversary to ourselves(me & hubby) n next weekend is our turn to have long weekend,Queen’s bday,so Happy bday to the queen also!Tuak Cheers!

Thanks and a Happy Anniversary to you and Simon. How many years to your Silver Jubilee? Any grand celebration! Yes, God save the Queen!

  17. happy holidays everyone…whatever you’re celebrating.

    :):)

And to you too! My daughter’s home and I’m cooking my baked cheese giant prawns for her dinner… Yum! Yum! LOL!!!

  18. BTW, going to charity dinner tonight..entertainment by “Australian Bee Gees” – *keeping open mind*.

They should be good. Been around for sometime now. Performed in West Malaysia a few times, in Genting as well, I think! Ya, keep an open mind – after all, they’re not the Bee Gees!

  19. Thanks for the wish.
Will be going back to my longhouse either tomorrow or the day after. You are welcome to visit. Not that far just cross the igan bridge. LOL!
Coming back here on the 2nd kot.
So your daughter’sback. Wa, sure will get lots and lots of food posts.. Hehe

Bawang Assan kah? That one quite far… Better stay off the roads these few days. Lots of drunk people. LOL!!! Holiday, why go back so early? Not going off somewhere?

  20. Thanks for the wish! Gayu guru gerai nyamai, arap ka kitak bulih pengelantang, pengerai enggau pengaya ba taun tu. Hooo haaa….For those not celebrating, well, hapi holiday.

    Welcome. Ya, have fun…..

  21. Guess I learnt a bit of Ibanese (or is it Bahasa Sarawak) here. Lol. There is some truth to the statement that folks here in the peninsula don’t know enough about Sabah and Sarawak folks, unfortunately. Thanks and happy Hari Gawai/Pesta Kaamatan to all! πŸ˜€

That’s the Iban language, no such thing as Ibanese…and Bahasa Sarawak is the local Malay dialect spoken here which is a bit different from BM. A lot of truth, not just some…but then again, there are a lot we do not know about our own HUGE state, what more to say the other states in the country.

    1. Many thanks for the correction. See, I’m the living example of that statement! πŸ˜†

Now don’t say Sarawak, even I don’t know much about Johor despite it being 7 times smaller than Sarawak. There are orang Bugis living in the state and I don’t even know a shred about their lifestyle πŸ˜›

That’s the sad state of affairs these days. People move around in their own circles only… Maybe the world’s gone too big, too fast, too busy, too impersonal…unlike the time when I was young.

  22. To all Sabahans and Sarawakians, my heart and my greetings will always be with you though I am stuck in Semenanjung. XD

Hey! Thought I heard you say that you’re coming home for Gawai? Change of plans, eh? Wink! Wink! Go!…Go!…Ask her out and you two con have some fun on your own!!! Hehehehehe!!!

  23. STP, thanks for the greetings…(waaaay belated at the time I am reading it, but yeah, you know why… πŸ˜‰ )

Btw, I was very briefly in Sibu at the end of the school hols 2 weeks ago as I said I woul be but yeah, too brief to meet up. Only had time to savour e-cafe’s laksa. TWO BOWLS some more! Yum! Yum! πŸ˜€

  24. STP, thanks for the mention… and just like mar … so sorry… wayyyyy more belated than mar! LOL! But hey, at least I’m here now eh? πŸ˜› As you know, at this time of your post, I was away in Manila with Man-D and our friends hehehehe

LOL!!! That was two months ago! Hahahaha…never mind, as long as you stay in touch.
