Hot stuff (2)…

I cooked curry fish head for lunch yesterday…

STP's curry fish head

…using the A1 Mountain Globe brand instant curry mix (seafood). It was spicier, tastier and had a much more presentable colour than what Pollie gave me from Bintulu.

It was drizzling here in the morning so I did not feel like going out marketing so that is why I did not have the usual ingredients like ladies’ fingers, pineapples, brinjals, tomatoes, bean curd sticks and tauhu pok (fried bean curd cubes) but it still tasted very nice and we finished it all in one sitting.

For the vegetable dish, I cooked this…

STP's fried paku with sambal hay bee

…plate of paku (wild jungle fern) with baby corn fried with hay bee (dried prawns) sambal and we finished all that as well. There were 6 of us – me, my daughter, my old lady…and 3 of my friends. Since there was nothing left by the end of the meal, I could assume that either it was very delicious…or they were very hungry! LOL!!

And talking about instant mixes, the other day, I bought a packet of Seri Murni sayur masak lemak (vegetables cooked in santan/coconut milk) @ RM2.80 a packet and this was what I ended up with…

It tasted very nice but looked kind of pale, so I added a teaspoon or two of serbuk kunyit (tumeric powder) to give it a better colour. It wasn’t hot enough too, so I added some cili padi for that extra kick!

Incidentally, those of you who love kay-leng-nga rojak/pasembur or Rojak Udin (formerly Rojak Kassim), now the guy has a stall by the roadside along Jalan Kpg Datu in the evening (left hand side if you are coming from town or Jalan Masjid) waiting with ready-packed packets of RM3.00 each. He will just scoop the gravy into a separate plastic bag for you once you’ve placed your order. For one thing, you will not have to drive to the cafe in the centre of town and can thus avoid the congestion along the narrow Sibu streets where inconsiderate and recalcitrant motorists park their huge vehicles illegally by the roadside right in front of the (coffee) shops.

You can empty everything onto a plate yourself once you get home and pour the sauce over that…

Sibu's Rojak Udin

The photo was taken at night in flourescent light and that accounts for the pale colour. It certainly looks better than that actually. Of course, you will not get that much potatoes. My daughter loves them, so we boiled some and added the extra ourselves. I would have added some hard-boiled eggs too…but there was already too much for us to finish. Another time perhaps…
