Doing it anyway…

I’m not really into western cuisine but the other morning, I decided to just do it anyway. You see, all this while, I’ve been frying rice kampung-style, Chinese-style…or whatever style depending on what I could find lying idle in the fridge…so this time around, I thought I could do it differently for a change.

I chopped five cloves of garlic and sliced the two remaining chirozo sausages that I still had in my freezer…and I decided to use a bit of the “mixed herbs” as well…

Ingredients

I melted two tablespoons of butter in the wok and fried the garlic till slightly brown before adding the chorizo sausages. After stirring for a while, I put in the leftover rice that I found in the fridge…and at the same time, I threw in a pinch of the mixed herbs…and sprinkled a few dashes of Lea & Perrins worcestershire sauce and two slices of Cheddar cheese, cut into tiny little bits. After mixing everything together and stirring for a while, the dish was done and ready to be served – my garlic & butter rice with chorizo sausages and cheese…

G&BR with CS & C

So, was it good? I must say that I liked it very much – it was a welcome change from the usual, that’s for sure. I loved the fragrance of the butter and the garlic and the chorizo sausages certainly went a long way in contributing towards the overall taste. However, the next time around, I think I would add a lot more than just a pinch of the mixed herbs as I could only detect a hint and I would prefer it to be a little bit stronger.

My missus and I just ate it like that but I scooped out a bit and adding a spoonful or two of evaporated milk to loosen the rice, I put that in a small casserole. Then I topped it with cheddar cheese slices, cut into thin strips…

Topped with cheese

…and put it in the oven to bake till the cheese had melted…

Baked

That was for my daughter who was coming home later that afternoon and she liked it…

Inside

…or at least, she said she did.

And would I want to cook it like this again? Well, I probably would….once in a while or depending on the occasion or the theme of the dinner. I know self praise in no praise but frankly, I do think it was pretty good – nicer than some baked rice that I have had around here

  1. Wah, this is real comfort food. I especially like the pic of your garlic-butter rice with chorizo … If I saw that on a menu, there’s a good chance I’d order it!

It tasted great, very fragrant – butter, garlic…plus the chorizo and the cheese all blending together well.

  2. Better home cooked than eating out. As my son always said, home cooked food is made from love. πŸ™‚

Precisely! Ahhhh!!!! Yours is also a one-child family like mine, eh? Stop running, make it easier for your hubby to catch you! LOL!!! πŸ˜€

    1. I agree with lina, home cooked food is the best. Better than eating out so much.

Definitely! But sometimes, lazy…and other half also lazy – only two at home, just tapao lah…end of story.

  3. Yummy! I think I could do this…actually I think I should be able to whip this up quite quickly instead of my usual fried rice. Have some leftover rice in the fridge πŸ˜€

Nice, and a welcome change. Loved the special fragrance of the ingredients used.

  4. I fry all my veges with garlic and butter and a dash of herbs if they’re handy. Wonderful flavor. Learned the trick from a Vietnamese fusion place.

Ya, the garlic and butter certainly add to the fragrance…and some places here fry baby kailan with cheese too – quite nice – something different from the usual.

  5. Oh… everything with cheese is definitely delicious to me. LOL!

It was nice, different from the usual…but I don’t think I would want to eat this all the time…not like our kampung fried rice, eat that every day also not a problem.

  6. wow… that amount of cheese… is….too…scary.

It’s cheddar and not creamy so there is the fragrance but not the richness like in those pasta sauces – would put me off after a spoonful or two. Not for people watching their figure, of course…so you can skip the cheese…and the butter too! πŸ˜›

  7. Yeah!!…cheers. Both ways looks good. Anything with cheese I love it but with appropriate amount. Too cheesy I will feel geli.

Yup, especially if it is too rich and creamy.

  8. Adding cheddar cheese while frying rice wouldn’t make the rice sticky?

I likey add cheese in my Maggie mee! Yum!

Nope, I added just a bit and the one I bought would not melt so well, Australian-made – see the topping – even after baking, not like Kraft or Chesdale. I prefer those but they’re more expensive.

  9. Not bad! Not Bad! Fried rice with a different flavor and you even managed a baked rice. Self praise is alright once in a while, I mean we can feel proud of what we have achieved but of course lah, not to the point where we broadcast to everybody πŸ˜€

    Oops!!! I just did, didn’t I? πŸ˜‰

  10. The baked rice looks good but I still prefer oriental cooking. Once a while, I don’t mind indulge in Western cuisine.

Me too…but I think my daughter would prefer this – wouldn’t really want to eat my fried rice in the morning – Chinese or kampung style. She said she had enough of fried rice when she was in Sg Petani… 😦

  11. i guess that very yummy, hmm tho never thought of
having cheese with rice, but the finish product
    seems very very appetizing

There is baked cheese rice…in the cafes and I think you can google the recipes – not the same of course – I tend to take shortcuts. Hehehehehe!!!!

  12. Wah.. your butter rice look awesome but your baked rice is extremely good. I always like baked or grill rice, crispy on the outside and soft inside. Will try your version next time. Thanks for sharing.

    Have a great weekend, regards.

Tasted great to me, better than what I had outside. So far, all had been disappointing…

  13. My kids will love this baked rice, Andy likes to order baked rice with lots of cheese .. as for me, I still don’t know how to enjoy it… too butter-ish for me… πŸ™‚

My daughter too. We, old school…but maybe, I’m a little better than you. Hehehehehe!!!! πŸ˜‰

  14. Bake cheese rice, i love to have but I dare not have much. Fattening la!

This is what I tell people – scared fat, no need to eat! Nibble, nibble…no point lah. Food is to be enjoyed…not to eat in fear but of course, all must be in moderation. Imagine those young people going for those rich pastas, giant burgers and stuff in the cafes and restaurants all the time… Now, that, I would say is over-indulgent, too much.

  15. I love fried rice!! But this fried rice look very fattening! hahahhahahha..and i think only can eat a bit, cannot eat too much.

I’d stick to the usual kampung-style or Chinese style…but once in a while, this would be good for a change. Melissa liked it.

  16. the chorizo sausage sure looks like chinese sausage to me. I’m sure the fat from the sausage helps to make the rice more fragrant.

There was some kind of oil coming out…like chili oil – that sure helped make it tastier.

  17. so creative lah… what a mix! That chorizo sausage looks really good from the deep rich colors… I love chorizo and always buy it for my pastas… great idea to do Chorizo Fried Rice… gonna steal yr idea ya… tq in advance! πŸ˜‰

Those were the last two I had – no more chorizos in the freezer…so I wouldn’t be having any in my cooking from now on. Can’t get them here. Sobssss!!!!

  18. That was a very good attempt, Arthur! I could tell you really like cheese!!! So much of it! πŸ˜€

My daughter, especially. Too bad we have a very limited variety here, cheddar mostly.

  19. The fried rice looked perfect already la….not fond of the cheese

My daughter loves cheese. I’m ok – with or without. Personally, I’d much sooner go for my usual kampong-style fried rice anytime.

  20. It looks like that baked quite nicely!

I think it looked better when I used other brands of cheddar slices – this one’s also Australian but cheaper than the rest…and did not taste as strong either.
