Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

Little bit of this, little bit of that (1)…

I love liver…but I know many who don’t. It may be beef or chicken liver cooked-rendang style…or pork liver cooked with ginger and Bombay onions in soy sauce, Chinese style or simply boiled and served in a clear soup like this…

Liver soup

Usually, I would prefer it with a bit of pork intestines and some minced meat balls and whatever else – with or without glass noodles like how they serve it here but when I had it at this particular place that sells very good kolo mee, there was only liver inside. I had a plate of kampua kosong (plain noodles without meat) with it…

Liver soup & kampua

…and I would say that I enjoyed it very much but there was a bit too much liver for me to finish…and besides, I was being a bit careful so as not to over-indulge in case I ended up with a gout attack.

I would never touch these though – phoenix claws, they call them…

Phoenix claws 1

…which is a somewhat fanciful name for what they actually are – chicken claws. These have been deep fried and braised in soy sauce and five-spice powder and what not till tender and chewy. My mother loves them a lot so I would drop by regularly at one coffee shop in Rejang Park – the one right next to the cinema (I think the name is “My Home”, if I’m not mistaken) in the block opposite the post office. The big ones are 80 sen each and there are some smaller ones that they sell for 60 sen each.

Don’t ask me what they taste like though as I really do not know. All my life, I’ve never eaten them…

Phoenix claws 2

…nor the butt, the parson’s nose or what is often commonly called bishop’s nose that a lot of people seem to love so much – no, thank you!

Moving on, I wonder how many of you have eaten these before…

Kuih berangin

They’re called kuih berangin (windy cake) and is coated with toasted grated coconut. Inside, it is supposed to be sweet but these that I bought for 3 for RM1.00 had nothing of the sort. I don’t think you’ll see me buying those and eating them again…if you get what I mean.

I’ve also tried the bingka cheese, also 3 for RM1.00 at my regular Malay kuih stall at Bandong…

Bingka cheese

…but I think I would rather stick to the usual bingka pandan (screwpine leaves)…

Bingka pandan

…or the bingka labu (pumpkin). Personally, I feel that they taste a lot nicer.

So? What have you all been up to at your end? Had anything nice lately?

Then you will probably have to stay a month… LOL!!! Good night! Don’t have nightmares… LOL!!!

  2. errr, i think i still accept pork liver not beef liver, but then i’ve cut down and almost not eating them already.. as for chicken feet, haha, i don’t mind eating that especially when it’s braised with dark sauce, it’s so nice and tender, put the whole foot in and i only spit out the bones, kekekekeke~~ :p

Eyewwwwww….the way you describe what you do with the feet – so obscenely gross. LOL!!! :D Ya…good not to eat liver but I do give in to the temptation once in a blue moon. Beef liver masak rendang is VERY nice…better than chicken.

  3. I don’t really eat liver but I like adding them in soups or porridge for flavor.

That’s what some people do with the chicken innards – boil and use the stock…

So desperate. Later, daughter tak dapat, dapat constipation pulak!!! LOL!!! :D

  5. Wow so many types of food that you’ve covered in this post. I love liver too!! Whenever I come across a mobile steamboat van, I would definitely have 3 sticks being liver, kidney and cockerals. Loved the hot plate liver in black bean paste with lotsa ginger, sesame oil and chinese wine that mom cooked too.

Pity you dun like the chicken feet, or perhaps you should at least try once. You may love it! It’s a dish that I would definitely order at dimsum meals! ^^
    +Ant+

No, thank you… Can’t imagine what they’ve been stepping on…. Eyewwwwww!!!! LOL!!! Last time in Kuching, there was a roast meat stall selling char siew, roast pork, sausages and all and they had this one thing that I loved so much – char siew liver stuffed with a piece of pork fat inside. Yummmmmm!!!!! Last time I checked, the stall was still around (To Irene: They pushed the cart from Rubber Road every afternoon and stationed it by the road, opposite Open Air) but they were not selling that anymore. At those roadside “cocktail stalls”, I love the tongue too… Slurpssssss!!!!! ;)

    • Irene Tan said:

Oh yes, I know. I like that too. It has been quite sometimes I ate it. Don’t know still around or not.

Hahhhh!!! You know that stall – the one with the green roof!!!! I saw it there at a corner some years ago. Yummmm!!!!! Used to love it so much!

  6. I do not eat liver, don’t know how it tastes. That pandan kuih look nice anyway. Ok, we have final round of shopping/spring cleaning for CNY ;-)

    Wah…still a week away… Will be dirty again. :(

  7. Yeh! Had some really nice durians lately and was so tempted to make the Thai-style dessert out of them. Droolz* But have to control la CNY around the corner don’t want to fall sick from all the heaty food. Hehehe!!!

    Make tempuyak… ;)

  8. Lupp the bingka whatever haha. You should learn how to eat the chicken claws full of gelatin good for your legs so you can walk far and not restricted to a certain radius before you complain got leg pain..~;).

That’s what they say – eat chicken legs, legs become very strong. Ummmmm…I wonder which leg they’re talking about? Muahahahahahaha!!!!

    • Do you need me to spell out LEG the one connected to your thigh, ankle, feet and toes. Know you are the dirty old dragon got lots of legs and can’t remember which leg yourself..haha

LOL!!! Must be specific mah… Mana tau, nanti people understand wrongly… Hehehehehehe!!!! ;)

    • AW, who is this ‘ they ‘ you are referring to?? Bananaz never said “they say – eat chicken legs, legs become very strong…” ; you did! Eeeeee….you lah dirty minded, wondering which leg ‘they are talking about! Eyeeeewwww! Wata!!! ;) Bananaz, I your friend, OK, I save you from this naughty minded AW!!

People in general lah! Old folks especially…maybe want to trick poor unsuspecting souls like me to eat up everything – even the feet! But I was not so easily fooled… Hehehehehehe!!!! :D

  9. Mana Shereen? Still sick kah? :(

If sick, cannot go online meh? People nowadays…in toilet also Facebook. Got iphone, ipad…whatever pad…when sick, lagi rajin online. So much time on their hands…

    • Hah, who say I sick?…choyyyyy!

Yalor! Choi! Choi!…Ptui!!! People honeymoon in Sydney with hubby, celebrating his birthday…soon after Christmas honeymoon in Melbourne, sebarang say people sick. See! Now, don’t you wish you had married a pilot?

      • Tak mau pilot la… I always make my PC kapoot wan… I married the correct kuli liao. LOL!

Pilot can buy you every new model that comes out…and the old one can give to old pensioners like me…and everything all branded one – old pensioner can only afford the pasar malam fakes – look the same also what. Hehehehehehehehe!!!!!

    • I can go online and i do check ur blog several times a day while in Oz but using Iphone lar.You know me what, where can comment with a one liner ( mak nenek,ma) one but using iphone so darn susah lar to tap tap with my very fat fingers. To type one sentence takes me forever!!

See!!! I was right! I’m ALWAYS right! LOL!!! ;)

      • Eh, AW !! Where you got always right?! You not remember Annie’s birthday leh, you thought I got it wrong on FB! Huh! I am young-er than you, so I remember better than you ;)

Not not remember – I did not know her birthday lah!!! Thought she had some celebration with the girls not too long ago – maybe it was just a girls’ night out….

  10. What’s wrong with the kuih berangin?..you never tell also.I tak pernah makan that kuih unless it’s called something else in the peninsular.
Chicken feet lar best in the world. You masuk the whole feet in the mouth, you sedut-sedut the isi and kulit and then only you spit out all the bones.Very nice, gooey and smooth aja kat tekak.Good for our skin also…full of collagen…keeps the wrinkles away!!! As for the liver…aiyer…no thank you.Taste so funny one!!

The berangin was bland – doesn’t have the sweet stuff inside…so it’s just the taste of quite tasteless toasted grated coconut. Fail, big time. Eyewwwwww – gooey, smooth some more…..you make eating chicken feet sound so grossly erotic!!! You memang pakar lah hor? Muahahahahaha!!!! :D I’ll stick to the liver, thank you very much!

    • Irene Tan said:

Shereen, Arthur doesn’t know he is missing the most yummy yummy chicken claws. Arthur, if you try once you will want more and more and more. Come on. go for it.

Hmmm…you people can have all that you want. I think I can live without it…, thank you!

  11. Forget to inform you..besok I ‘cuti’ for 3 days more,ya..hehehe.Will be back on Friday and life will be back to normal until July:((

Now where are you off to this time? Fiji? Some place romantic? What about July? Comning to Sibu, right? Come! Come! I’m looking forward to that…and this time, stay at least one or two weeks. ;)

    • Fiji tu tak payah pergi again in this lifetime lar…sooooo boring and sweat like a pig…no thank you.Kasi me free pun I won’t go one..hahaha.Off to Melbourne again tomorrow.July belum confirm where we will be going…most probably off to visit Gertrude in San Francisco and then in September maybe to the UK.Was hoping to stop over in Sibu if time permits:))

Gertrude again? NOT FAIR!!! You just went there after Sibu…and stayed sooooo long there. Humph!!! No friend you liao lah! Don’t want to come, don’t want lor… :( Hey! Fiji…got waterfall, go swim in the pool…can get pregnant one, yunno! Maybe that fairy can go…

      • Hahaha…ya, the waterfall got some magic in it. Maybe Yoong can go and try it out and see really or not the waterfall betul-betul got magic or not…kahkahkah. After all, she is just the right age to see if it works or not. I am still too young for it whereas you pulak dah over the hill….hehehehe

This story, must ask my SIL. She was so old already, around 45 or so, I think, kids already in uni – heard she went to attend a wedding or something and went into the pool…and soon after coming home, she got pregnant. Kid now 7 or 8 years old… You can also go and try? Justyn can have a sister or younger brother to bully. LOL!!! :D

      • Ya…Virgin Mary!!!..hahahaha…No thank you. I no longer active like that…ahem!!!

        @.@!!!! *speechless

      • …so, about this waterfall in Fiji…so, just dip into the water, come out, and I will be pregnant?? Aiyah, don’t want lah this kind of miracle, so slack one – I like to work hard for everything…muahahahaaa! Eh, Shereen, you don’t kacau me ahh!

Yalor…that Shereen so bad. But if dip inside, can come out slim, I don’t mind going. I’m too lazy to work at it… LOL!!! ;)

  12. LOL…same like Hubs, don’t eat the claws..but I do.

You can have all you want – I don’t want it either…

  13. Oh!…that is my favourite, chicken claws. Give it to me anytime, I would finish them all in no time. Say “TAK NAK” to the bishop’s nose. Pork liver soup, ermm…take it once in awhile.
Kuih berangin..very new to me and never tasted it.

Wah!!! So you have the skin of a 16-year-old lah? Eat so much chicken claws. LOL!!!

    • Irene Tan said:

True kah if eat chicken claws can have the skin of 16 year old, then I won’t mind to eat it every now and then. Now my skin is like 70++ year old people, hahaha.

You ask those ladies lah! They keep saying that – don’t look that young, if you ask me – maybe they didn’t eat enough… Hehehehehehe!!!!

  14. Nom nom nom, give me pork liver anytime, either soup or dry, all i sapu!! Yum!! Hub always said i am weird, take pork liver, but not stomach or intestines or kidney, he eat all but not the liver, he said yucky wor.

Braised chicken claw, my hub love it so much, no feet feet for me, but i think Cruz love it too, i saw him ate once, i nearly faint.

Wah…you and your hub are like two different worlds… Good lah! One eats this, one eats that – all finished, no fighting! Muahahahahaha!!!! Wah…so Cruz takes after your hub then… Never mind, two feet – one each chun-chun! LOL!!! :D

    • Annie,
First of all…”Happy Belated Birthday”..and hope that you had a good one too. Now, to tembak Arthur…Where can a foodie tak makan chicken feet?…even my hub who is super fussy with food pun makan chicken feet leh. We went for dim sum this morning and he wanted to take the chicken feet but I stopped him as we are too full already. Aiseyman Arthur, some more hor, he tu mat salleh with extra white buttocks..no campur one. Kalah lar lu,Arthur. Citttt!!!!

Not yet lah! Annie’s birthday on Chinese New Year’s Eve…and if you orang putih there dunno the date – it’s on 22nd January. CNY this year is on the 23rd! ;) Your hub…don wan to say lah…later he suddenly appears and posts comment again, two against one. Hehehehehehe!!!! :D

      • Oh patutlar…that’s why in my FB tak appear pun her birthday!!! Cehhhh…okay Annie…tarik balik my wishes and simpan. On the real day, I’ll wish you…hahaha!

Yalah…itu Yoong early-early want to wish people already. Makes people confused only. Hahahahahaha!!!! :D

      • Heh heh heh!! AW, you’re sore loser! You got it wrong on FB, now you blame Ah Yoong!! Go eat chicken butt lah, can improve brain power one!

What old grandmother’s tale is that? Eat chicken butt, later mouth also “like chicken butt” – Chinese expression meaning talk cock or talk shit. LOL!!! :D

  15. Pork liver, if in porridge, with lots of ginger, quite nice – then dip dip in soya sauce, nice. Your fav eyeeeew…there is collagen in the eyeeew! And, according to reports, it can help prevent osteoporosis. Chicken butts – my nephew in KL told me can get deep fried ones in pasar malams, said it’s yummy. Eeee…chicken butts, any vitamins / goodness in them? Can you try one and tell me? muahahahaaaa!! If I praise you and say you’re a good boy, will you try one (chicken) butt and one (chicken) claw and tell me what you think? :)

You try lah! I hear it’s very cheap in Oz because nobody wants to eat – maybe they will give to you free some more. Go, go and try and then you tell me whether it is nice or not.

    • No goodness in the butt lar…all fats only…makan to cultivate heart-attack only.Maybe can take the fats to inject kat muka to plump up certain areas like the lips…then the Nyonya saying “mulut macam bontot ayam” is really true…hahahaha.

Yup! But people enjoy it for the fat – very the lemak-lemak… Eeeeekkkk!!! So geli!!!! :(

    • AW (notice I keep calling you AW? Your pet name mah ;) ), you got wrong info leh! Chicken feet selling fast these days, we have many Chinese here. Bishop’s nose, I will have a look-see and let you know whether they sell or not, but eeee…yuck, no lah to eating it.

Ya…Chinese not surprised – all filthy rich, but very stingy…so will buy chicken feet as they’re cheap. Cheapskates….. LOL!!! :D

      • Hey, who say chicken feet is cheap. The boneless one is RM14 per kilo. So mahal leh. Don’t play play hor.

Overseas, not here… Here, people eat every part of the body – nothing is cheap. Hey…come to think of it, I haven’t eaten pig’s blood for a long time. Hmmmm…I wonder where I can get to eat that. They put that in the mixed soup that they sell at the kolo mee stalls along Carpenter Street. Yummmmm!!!!

  16. Last time when I was very young (around 10 or so) my mum used to boil the liver with just boiled water over them… and lots of shredded ginger.. those days, the pigs fed on natural foodstuff, right? Nowadays I dont take much anymore (kiasi) ..one two pieces but I do like the kidneys though.. (without the smell, of course).. some dont know how to wash, still got the “urine” smell.. hahaha… and lastly, I like the pig stomach! Love to chew on them…

Yup…they say kidneys, must know how to wash very very clean… Very dirty! Ah well…you know the function so what do you expect? LOL!!! :D

  17. I love pork liver soup! I had a big bowl with two plates of kampua the other day.

I don’t like that kind of chicken feet though – I do like chicken feet, but not the kind that has been deep fried. The texture isn’t to my liking, that rough, wrinkled and dry (not to mention soggy) mess. I *do* like regular chicken feet though – even better if they remove the bones – no hassles! :D

I think they do that at the dim sum places – no bones. Still…no, thank you.

  18. Annie bday not yet lah… lol… her bday on eve of CNY? Or around there… i remember her bday wan… lol…

Yalah…I already checked her profile on Facebook. No secrets! LOL!!! :D

  19. I noticed your recent post titles, they’re all lyrics from those oldies aren’t they?

Chicken feet I do not take either, but used to love bishop’s nose. It’s good for the skin ya :P

Oh? So that’s why your skin’s so smooth, is it? Or your nose same shape as well? Muahahahahahahaha!!!!! Joking only, ya! Jangan marah! Ya…all my post titles are names of songs…but some not so famous ones.

  20. Wah, you love spare parts soup leh…….I only like deep fried pork intestine…..nice with porridge.

I don’t think I’ve had that before…but I’m not really into deep fried stuff.

  21. Kuih Bingka I know.. kuih berangin i dunno. I love liver. When I kecik kecik last time my mom boils it with dunno what and force me to finish the soup as I always nose bleed then. It is believed that liver helps in some ways I think.. Now, Ethan pulak always nose bleed.. but i did not boil anything for him. dunno what to do oso..

Nose bleed, heaty…should not eat liver. Go for cooling stuff. Maybe your mum thinks she must replace the lost blood? People take liver when not enough blood…

  22. My mum and I are foot fetish for sure, chicken feet only not human feet please. YIK!!! The first time my Quay Lo saw us eating the chicken feet, he almost threw up. We tried to get him to try one but he refused. He is definitely not a foot fetish. That’s fine with me. Now, whenever he sees my mum prepare the chicken feet, he will not fail to tease her by taking up two feet and making some funny actions in front of her. hahahaha

The bowl of liver reminds me of my first late husband. He is crazy over liver. I think probably that is what shortened his life too. I seldom take liver after he passed away because it puts a lump in my throat:(

I would love to try the kuih, they make me drool. I know it is impossible for me to try so many great food in just 2 days. My first trip will be a start of many more. Arthur, you may regret inviting me there for I will be “kacau=ing” you very often to take me eat all the food you “tayang” in your blog. muahahaha

Yes, yes…come as often as you can – always welcome. Things get so boring here in this small town where nothing much ever happens. Hahahahaha!!! Your Quay Lo is so cute, so funny – hope to get to meet him someday. Hmmm…that’s why I take liver only once in a blue moon – can’t eat all the time. :(

  23. I like pork intestines but I don’t like the liver… I heard it’s not healthy to eat the liver.

They say all innards are not healthy…and meat isn’t all blame-free either. Moderation is the key! ;)

  24. The kuih kuih in this post are so new to me. None of them I’ve tried before or seen before.

Both my kids love the phoenix claws! They are so delicious. And yes, many don’t like liver. I’m one of them! hahaha…..they taste yucky…..

Eyewwwwww…… I’d go for liver anytime. LOL!!! :D

  25. [...] is the coffee shop at Rejang Park here in Sibu that I go to quite frequently to buy the braised chicken feet aka phoenix claws that my mother loves to [...]
