Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

In my dreams…

I would not have been able to stay at a place like this, not even in my dreams…if my blogger-friend, Elaine, had not so very kindly and generously let me use her hotel privilege discount vouchers so there I was, with my missus and Melissa, basking in luxury at the Renaissance, Kuala Lumpur…

Renaissance KL 1

27 storeys high, I think it is taller than the tallest building in Sibu…

Renaissance KL 2

The room that we were given was really big…

Renaissance KL room 1

…with a king-size bed and everything else…

Renaissance KL room 2

The bathroom/toilet was probably bigger than some of the bedrooms in the present-day condos and apartments…

Renaissance KL washroom

…with a bath tub and a shower as well.

This was the view from our window – the swimming pool…

Renaissance KL - poolside view

…and a glimpse at the Kuala Lumpur city centre…

Renaissance KL - city view

You could tell it was high-class hotel when they would tell you not to do things in such a pleasant manner…

Renaissance KL - no smoking sign

…and even the dustbin had the hotel logo…

Renaissance KL - dustbin

…and mineral water was available at RM23.00 a bottle…

Renaissance KL mineral water

We stayed there, indulging in the comfort for four wonderful days but all too soon, it was time to go back to reality… Sigh!

  1. Ohh… lebih kurang like The Gardens hotel, with bath tubs and all. they got kasi welcome basket anot?

Buy one, free one…and you expect a fruit basket? Wah! Your Agong’s head extra big one kah? LOL!!! :D

    • Hahaha… mana tau… I tot they got kasi welcome basket ma…my parents stay in The Gardens usually get a basket or those tiny chocs or fruits…

On special offer package, dream on! Still given newspaper in the morning, can consider good already. Some hotels, if on government rate, they do not give you. At Mid Valley, of the three hotels, the most expensive is Gardens – Philip stayed at Boulevard…and Cititel’s online booking rate is more or less the same as what I paid per night at Renaissance, using the discount vouchers.

Your father, company paying? They get cooporate rate, I guess…but still expensive – like government rate. I would just go to the smaller no-star hotels. Even without special rates, they would be a lot more affordable.

      • Wah, special discount package and normal package ada beza wan ah? I never knew that cuz everytime I went to The Gardens, I see the welcome basket (which i usually hijack afterwards)

Yes…the company paying for my dad. He can claim from company wan each time he stays there cuz whenever he comes to KL, it’s usually for business.

I think one room was Rm289++ to Rm300++ per night including breakfast for two. But he got corporate rate and told me if booked online, it was much cheaper, if not mistaken. He used to stay in Cititel and Boulevard, but wasn’t so happy with Cititel’s service and said Boulevard always try to cheat him to sign up for their membership and take those expensive suites instead of the standard ones, so he sakit hati-everytime called up Boulevard, they always cakap only those mahal suites left.

That’s more expensive than what I paid to stay at Renaissance…but of course, I was using the vouchers. Cititel – I used to stay there when it was the only one around and I wanted to shop at the mega mall. Rooms smaller than my toilet, size of a Queen double bed – no closet, just a plank for the writing table and the tv on it too and although it seems that it isn’t so good anymore, yet it is getting more and more expensive – this doctor friend of mine had cockroaches for company at breakfast: http://simonsim.wordpress.com/2011/11/06/siu-keong/

  2. Wow! I love the room and bathroom! They look so elegant!

Ya, we certainly had a comfortable stay there… ;)

  3. Oh my god.. i don’t get it.. why does the drinking water cost 23 ringgit ? What i would normally do is drink it then go out buy one to replace the one i took.. haha

Evian. You’d better watch out. Sometimes they check two times or more a day and once they find anything missing, it goes into your bill. Never mind that you replace it later…

  4. It’s indeed a very nice and classy hotel! You and family really pampered ! Got sink yourself in the bathtub? Hahaha…

Gosh! Once I get in, the water would all overflow and I’d flood the whole room… My daughter didn;t want either – had images of being pushed into the water and killed by drowning – watched too many horror movies!

    • *pengsan* Melissa watched too much horror movies la… haiyorrr… nonid sked wan la, wun so easy drown in the tub lah!

Hey! I’ve slipped before…and hurt myself in a bathtub in a hotel Alor Setar. Well, we were not in the room long enough to soak ourselves in it, anyway.

  5. wow, so lucky of you to have the chance to stay in there.. i only pass by this hotel only, haha!! errr, wait, i think i’ve had high tea there also lah, not bad still right?? haha..

Yes, I was truly lucky, count my blessings… Like you, I used to pass by the place only before and admire from a distance. Didn’t even have the chance to go for high tea there. ;)

  6. Itu lah dia 5 Star hole-tel would burn a hole in your pocket for RM23 sian chui *fairy water* my goodness that’s sudah lebih. Wonder is there any ‘water fish’ willing to pay for that amount? haha…

I wonder too. Maybe some Mid-Eastern oil tycoon?

    • Yalor oil tycoon can afford it but not poor Bananaz can eat 5 meals of buffet economical brunch with that bottle of sian chui..~;). haha.

…and can get 10 plates of kampua noodles! ;)

  7. Elaine is very sweet to let you have her discount vouchers. That is also because you are a generous and nice person. This is call “Mirror” effect:D By the way, I am connected to Elaine on facebook. Thanks to you that I get to know another nice person.

Yes, she’s such a nice lady, so kind and generous…and Annie too…and the erst as well. I’m so blessed to get to know all the wonderful people. :)

  8. nice comfy hotel..
i was there before few years back.. just at the ballroom for an event though..

You’re lucky. Never even had the chance to step in the place before this. ;)

  9. Nice,ya. we stayed there few yrs back, only thing I don’t like is the location not as convenient compared to Westin, etc….nearer to Pavi…. drinks are not cheap, my kids ordered watermelon mocktail drinks when they were lounging at the poolside, nearly pengsan when we got the bill! ..Btw u are amongst good company, I think Bill Clinton stayed there last time on his official visits…..Lol!

Yup, the location isn’t too great but it’s ok as I had people coming to take us out all the time. I heard the F1 drivers, the big names, stayed there when they first had it in Sepang.

    • Stella, i think it’s Al-Gore stay there, that time i still worked there. Bill Clinton didn’t manage to come.

That must be the time when he created a scene at some international conference here…

  10. wow..u were so lucky!

    Yes, I know…. :)

  11. aiyayaya…..the mineral water so mahal ah….outside sell less than rm2 leh…..

Ummm…Evian, not so cheap lah…but definitely not that expensive. They do give free drinking water in their exclusive hotel bottles every day though so it wasn’t so bad plus there were tea and coffee making facilities – all on the house.

    • Expensive or not… it’s just water. Entah entah it’s processed from *censored* in those water plants instead of taken from the water source. Kita mana tau… they never show us how the water was obtained. LOL!

Evian…mountain spring lah…and Perrier and the like – all the expensive imported mineral water…and watch out for my Harrods post. ;)

  12. The room looks fab and pretty spacious. You took along my Walkers Homebake mah…heaps better than a fruit basket leh! ;)

Yes, sitting…relaxing…basking in the luxury, enjoying the coffee…and the Scottish shortbread… Who could ask for more? ;)

  13. I once checked into an expensive hotel and opened the wide wooden door to the bathroom. Greeting me was the hand washing basin with all those toiletries nicely laid out. Look left and I saw the long bath tub. Look right and I found the glass shower cubicle but no toilet to be seen. Yap, couldn’t find the toilet anywhere. Walked out of the bathroom and apparently, there is another smaller wooden door somewhere else in the room that holds the toilet. I felt like a country pumpkin that day. It was the 5 stars hotel next to the KLIA.

That would be Pan Pac. I once stayed in a room like that at Kuching Hilton – paid for by Petronas when they invited me to give talks to Form 5 students. Big room…and separate dressing room with closet and all and door to toilet and another to bathroom. When I signed the bill upon checking out, it was around RM300 plus a night, about RM400…but that was sometime ago, dunno how much a room like that would cost now…and that probably was their corporate rate.

    • I wouldn’t want to pay that much for a room so my Pan Pac was paid by MAS due to missed connection on her part.

Lucky you… I only missed a connection once and all I got was Grand Continental… :(

  14. Michael Jackson stayed there when he did his KL concerts in the mid- 90′s and I of course, must also tinggal sana lar..hahaha.Rooms in Renaissance are much nicer than Concorde or Shangri-la although Nikko Hotel lagi best. However, the location is not so good if you do not have a car and has to walk everywhere….but then, who cares to walk in KL what with the heat and all kan? It is nice of Elaine to give you the voucher..must pamper yourself.
PS: With only a king size bed, mana Melissa tidur?…I don’t see any extra bed leh.You got 2 rooms instead?

Longhouse-style, like sardines in a row. LOL!!! There’s the monorail if you want to use that, straight to Lot 10/Bukit Bintang…and lots of taxis around. Taxis in KL not expensive, not like Singapore. My cousin stayed at Concorde KL the other day and she said the rooms, though well-maintained are somewhat oil and the aircon made noise the whole night through. I stayed there a few times long time ago.

  15. Nice room!! But get discount from Elaine next time drop by KL!

Ya, have to. Otherwise, how to afford? :(

  16. Bring back my old memory, i worked there for three years…I missed those moment.

Three of you sleep on the same bed? Or you sleep on the chair? kekekekekkekeke

No, missus slept on the floor. Thank goodness, got carpet. Muahahahahahaha!!!! :D

  17. forgot to wish you, Happy Winter Solstice to you and your family!

    Same to you and yours.

  18. Wah, so good got discount vouchers from friend. Classy-looking room. I’ve never seen their rooms, only been to the hotel’s ballroom and coffee house for buffet dinners. Happy Winter Solstice :-)

Buffet dinners? Ooooo…they’re over RM100++ per head. I wouldn’t be able to afford that…even with the 25% discount for stay-in guests.

    • I had buffet dinners there many years ago, by invitation of our business partners. It wasn’t so expensive then, think it was about RM70++. Anyway, I wouldn’t pay that kind of price to have dinner there!

Now, after the 25% discount for room guests, it is that amount…and I still wouldn’t go for it. No, thank you.

  19. wahh so good ler..enjoy enjoy :)
    Happy winter solstice …

Thanks, and the same to you…

  20. My Hotel at KL Sentral not bad and within easy reach of all public transport. As far as I am concerned, a newer hotel beats a more Stars but older hotel.

Not from my point of view. The rooms in the newer hotels are usually very small…but I guess that depends on where you stay and how much you are willing to pay. Usually I would go some place in the midst of Bukit Bintang – more for the convenience of the location than anything else.

    • So which hotel in Bukit Bintang you usually goes to?

The one infested with a whole lot of Foochows. Staying there, you will surely bump into somebody you know from Sibu. The Bintang Warisan – cheaper to book through travel agent than online, phone or walk-in.

      • I think about 2 years ago, a friend stayed there and I went up to check his room. Terrible smell. Unless they had it renovated since, I will pick MyHotel anytime. If I have to pick a hotel at Bukit Bintang, I suggest you check out Imperial Hotel that’s around the corner.

That one has been around since the 80s…and somehow I’ve never felt like I would want to stay there, dunno why.

      • Imperial Hotel had undergone pretty extensive renovation recently a couple of years ago. No longer the 80s fixture and fitting.

Oh? Will give it a try sometime then… A friend could not get a room anywhere and ended up staying there not too long ago but did not have any nice things to say about it. I guess different people have different expectations.

      • Earlier this year, I stayed at Nova hotel that’s further down the road and listed as 3 Stars whereas my friends stayed at the no Star Imperial Hotel and believe me, the latter is much better.

Aiyor…Nova is really the pits!!! Would have been a nice hotel but I think badly damaged, badly maintained. Stayed there once – will never stay there again!

  21. happy bola-bola day STP!

23 buck for a bottle of mineral water. insane!

Lifestyle of the rich and famous… ;)

  22. Aiyo LOVE the bathroom! Can dancing dancing in there! A very nice place indeed! At RM23 for a bottle of mineral water, I’ll jump into the pool and quench my thirst there :P

    Eeeeee….everytime I jump into a pool, I must pee first. Conditioned response… Muahahahaha!!!! :D

  23. haha RM23 can buy you 23 bottles of water. Lol… what people usually do is to drink it and then buy another one from the supermarket and replace it. hehe

Careful. Some hotels check twice or more times a day – they may find it missing and will bill you before you are able to replace it.

  24. I love the bathroom! So huge!! And the location is quite convenient too right.. :)

It was ok, Monorail station right next to it…but I did not use it – most of the time, somebody will come to pick us and take us out… ;)

  25. There’s actually 2 bottles of drinking water free in the bathroom, you didn’t take pic ? or you didn’t get any. I think most hotel obliges if you ask for more drinking water and we asked for extra pillows and towels, they sent immediately. Yes, the hotel is a bit run down , as compared to 10 years ago, when we got married there but somehow .. got sentimental reason to go back there. Amber always imagines her papa and mama walking up the long stairway during our wedding.
Oh yeah.. the MV vouchers i have is for Boulevard n Cititel, not Gardens. Gardens is no doubt the nicest n most premium hotel at MV, and there’s special washroom for guests at the Gardens Mall too.
Hope you enjoyed your stay at KL and come more frequent, you have many friends waiting to ‘surprise’ you here ;)

It’s not run-down…very well-maintained unlike some hotels. Yup, we got the drinking water…and there were enough pillows for us. Asked for an extra towel the first day…and they took it away the 2nd day and did not replace it. Tsk! Tsk! Every day had to ask. But it was a really nice hotel and we all enjoyed our stay there a lot. Certainly made our short break very much nicer, that’s for sure.

  26. [...] every beck and call. No doubt everything was quite expensive but I think what I saw in the menu at the hotel where I was staying was even more [...]
