These are potato croquettes…

…or in Malay, they are called bergedil.
I’m not really a fan as I find them a bit too oily but my daughter, when she was home, loved them and my mum too. So I would buy them occasionally for my mum to enjoy with her lunch.
What I would usually do is to fry them again on a non-stick pan. The excess oil would seep out and besides, this would give the croquettes a nicer golden colour. Then I would let them rest on some kitchen towels and press them with the same – this would further reduce the oil in them.
There are two types available at my regular Bandong stall in the morning – the plain ones, which are bigger…

…and the ones with meat (chicken)…

which are a bit smaller.
Both are priced at RM1.00 for 3 and personally, I find the ones with meat tastier and thus nicer. Which would you prefer?

Bergedil is nice to makan with soto…yum!I too prefer the ones with meat inside..tastier I feel than the plain ones.Have you tried the Indonesian version of bergedil?…I think they taste much better than our local ones as not as oily, lighter in texture and sometimes they golek the bergedils in breadcrumbs which gives a crunchier kulit…yums!…hungry leh…only 10am..haish!
Not a fan of soto…or maybe I’ve not tasted good soto or bakso yet. Prefer lontong. Never tried Indon bergedil…but I’ve bought these for my parents’ Indon maid before and she loved them…
i would naturally go for the one with meat too! hey we have the same taste! lol!, but i think your taste a class higher though, foodie at heart
Old man mah…have eaten more salt so more discerning when it comes to food. LOL!!!
Good idea to fry them again but without oil… yes, I am afraid of deep fried stuff nowadays..after eating, the oil is like stuck somewhere in the throat.. anyway, never take begerdil though my canteen is always displaying them..
You memang not 1Malaysian lah…only sticking to Chinese food and Chinese peahs… Must be more adventurous – so many yummy things out there and you never even try.
haha, the one with meat is nicer?? maybe because you are just a typical “carnivore”?? haha~~~ :p
It’s the taste, there’s a difference – nicer and anyway, at 3 for RM1.00, don’t expect to find too much meat inside…
I love potato racquets! urm.. croquettes..
I call them bergedil and I love making this for ethan
Lucky Ethan! You make for me?
I think we can get it at mamak restaurant….not cheap ehh. They selling at RM1/pcs.
How big? These are not very big. The ones with meat – maybe a bit bigger than a 50-sen coin…
Only nice when eaten warm. I shun and deep fried stuff that has a coat of yucky oil stuck to it. Am I being fussy? Mwahahahaha
+Ant+
I saw on one of the food shows that the oil must be very very hot before you drop anything in to fry so it will not soak in the oil and end up being so oily. Ya, anything is best taken hot – that is why I will fry them again on a non-stick pan…and it helps get rid of some of the oil too.
I love the meat bergedil and it cost RM1.50 per pc in malay food stall. But, it’s so cheap in Sibu…RM1 for 3 pieces..UNBELIEVABLE!
RM1.50??? They must be HUGE ones. We have a guy here selling chicken croquettas and they’re BIG…and it’s all meat – for only RM1.00 each. Very nice!
I prefer croquettes with meat inside. More tasty. I think re-frying them without oil is way to go. How come you so clever ar? hehe
I always do that when I buy deep fried stuff, never mind even if they are not really oily. When I see the oil seeping out on to the non-stick pan…and also onto the kitchen towel, I find it so consoling…. At my shape and size, I certainly can do with a little less oil.
Over here is with beef. And now only i know it is call Bergedil.
Ya…and I’m wondering what the name means. I only know that berdegil means being stubborn… LOL!!!
For a moment there i thought it’s Ham Chim Peah. Yesterday saw Bananaz blogged about Deep Fry Devil . LOL
I think I like those with meat inside too.
It has a stronger and nicer taste…with the beef inside. Otherwise, it will be all potatoes…mostly. Nope, no pia or peah today – come back tomorrow. Hehehehehe!!!!
OOhh didn’t know you’re also health-conscious! Same like my hubby… he also doesn’t like food to be too oily or sweet. One time I bought him Cinnamon pretzel, he said it’s too sweet and washed away all the cinnamon sugar coating on top with water! Then he put it in the oven to bake it dry
haha
Not really health conscious but I do not like deep-fried stuff that’s too oily. Puts me off, never mind how nice. Ooooo….so Saucer is desperately trying not to grow rounder and rounder eh?
What to do? You’re so nice and slim…and you keep feeding him. Muahahahaha!!!!
Oooooo … i love both! There are another 2 types made with fish and minced lamb which are also very tasty and spicy. Then I have a family recipe my lo kong taught me (hand down from mother-in-law) … made with luncheon meat. Anyway, not so healthy to eat luncheon meat … so that’s hardly coming out of our kitchen nowadays. Yum yum … $1.00 for 3 is so cheap leh!
I’ve had the fish one – it came with the packet of nasi kerabu…and it was so very nice. Told them to tell the lady to make those for sale separately but so far, no sign of anymore.
Never had the lamb ones but we have a place selling tapas – the guy makes very nice chicken croquettas…so yummy! But I have not dropped by for a long time – a bit out of the way for me.
Don’t much about croquettes and have not heard of bergedil? Ello think Bananaz datang dari Jupiter, katak in his cave haha.
You haven’t? You same gang with Claire kah? LOL!!! But can’t blame you…all same colour to you so you can never tell the difference.
I like both! :p
Hah!!! How much in Kuching? Oily or not? Come to think of it, I’ve never seen these being sold anywhere in the city…
Hah! Bergedil…been some time since I last made these…mebbe I shud go borong satu guni potatoes again.
I would prefer the ones with meat inside…much more filling.
Tastier too… Not just the taste of potatoes…in which case, I might as well make my own mashed potatoes to eat.
Exactly…I always prefer those that have been mixed up with beef or chicken, but my version usually dun have beef or chicken, cuz I prefer to replace it with udang kering instead. My hubby and anak gila those…and can makan alot wif rice. My mum’s version have shredded carrot and the daun kucai inside, but I dun really fancy carrots and the daun. Tsk… I’m pretty carnivorous…and same goes with the anak.
Aha!!! I’m sure udang kering would be very nice too – reminds me of my late aunt’s soya bean kuih…using my leftover pulp after making soya bean milk. Nice, very nice.
or perkedel (indonesia)
nice lar…eat with soto, wuiiihhh sedapnye
Aha! That was what Shereen said. Hmmm…now I’ve to hunt for a shop that sells nice soto… So far, haven’t had any that turned me on.
*FAINTED* why must mention soto… now my bum bum itching to eat bergedil with that!
Not me! I’m not a fan of soto…
Are these like hash browns? But with the addition of vegetables, meat etc. The ones with meat sounds more appetizing hehe
No, no, no…not like hash browns, far from it. Hash browns would be something like tempeh…except that they’re potatoes and tempeh is soya bean. More like mashed potato patties plus all the other ingredients and pan-fried…
LOL…hash brown is flat, but this one is bulat bulat, Julia. I reckon it taste better than hash brown…hash brown is more plain in terms of taste.
Yup, not a fan of hash browns, like compact potato bits – my daughter likes, not me. I’d rather have mashed potatoes…
Oooopppsss… LOL looks like I have a lot to learn. I’m not familiar with Malay food
I think I’m like your daughter. I love hash brown AND mash potatoes. Hehe..
Me too… Many things I did not know before. Never too old to learn…
Ok, i am lousy on the malay or indian delicacy. Usually not a fan of it, like vadal and this.
But i know what is soto and bakso! I love it. Recently i try soto that bought by my colleagues, very nice. Now i start like it, but i still cannot “accept” lontong, the yellowish colour…
Lontong is something like masak lemak mah… The yellow colour is because of the kunyit – good for health, yunno! Can’t blame you as you grew up in Sibu – very limited things available…and also if you’re from a very Chinese home background, you would not be exposed to whatever may be available in our little small town that is not Chinese.
Eeeee… Annie, you dono what ur missing.
But nvm, if wanna go makan, can go with me anytime. i help u makan all those u dun like…like sambal belacan, etc etc etc. *evil laugh*
Quick! Quick! Drag her along and convert her! Get her to eat sambal petai!!! Even Shereen’s kiwi hubby loves that!! Muahahahaha!!!!
How come the names of the foods, i no hear before one,, ok now I must learn to become more about food already,so it makes it easier to comment in your blog….
Haiyor…city people, too busy making money – you have all these things there but you never bother to get to know them, not even their names. No time for all that.
Tak mungkin… Penang got a lot bergedil sold in kedai nasi kandar worr… I think Eugene more to Chinese cuisine? That is why not familiar with the names? (or the case is like me… tau makan only… see before, but never bother to ask the name as long as nice to eat. LOL!
No lah, I think he’s not so particular about food…never mind what, as long as nice. Not bothered to learn the names and all… Either that or he gang with Claire and Annie… LOL!!!
Since I am a carnivore, I prefer the ones with meat in it.
You’re my kind of man. Hehehehehe!!!! Wink! Wink!
Yeah.
Go go Carnivores!
LOL!!!
I can join begedil club with your mom and anak liao, love it!so far i hv only tasted the plain one, like the crunchy crust, even though it turns soggy still taste very good!
Looks like there are more than just the three of you – so many people like it as well.
I love eating bergedil……actually in Indonesia, we called it “perkedel”.
Your post reminded me have not been making perkedel for so long..might consider making it this weekend..
Ummmmm….what’s your address?
i tried japanese croquette before.. but i didn’t quite like it.. somehow prefer my potato to be just potato? haha.
but maybe i need to eat a little more of it to know :p.
Not my favourite either – it is very nice but I don’t like things that oily. Maybe I can try and make my own…and see if it is any better.
wah only RM 1 for 3? That’s a steal. I would prefer the ones with meat cos it tastes better.
The taste is indeed a whole lot better. I gathered that the ones with meat are made by a Javanese lady married to somebody here.
of cos my votes go to the potato ones. hahaha.
damn they look soooo yummy!
They are! Just a tad too oily for my liking… Hmmmm…looks like you’re outnumbered – the only one for the meat-free version. LOL!!!
since no one eats potato we use to make abc soup, we wud usually mash up the potatoes to make this.
Huh? Why add potatoes when nobody eats them? Wah…recycle and reuse eh? LOL!!!
