Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

This is new…

Still at my regular Bandong stall that I frequent in the morning, there is somebody new supplying the nasi lemak sold there…

New nasi lemak 1

The packet is rectangular, longer than the rest.

There used to be a lady making very nice nasi lemak for sale, extra spicy, but she has gone back to the peninsula – to Selangor, if I’m not mistaken. This one is nice but not as spicy…

New nasi lemak 2

…and the sambal, though pretty good, does not taste as nice as the one with (RM1.50) or without sotong (RM1.00). I like the rice though – softer and more fragrant.

New nasi lemak 3

There’s another one that I have never tried – with ikan tongkol. I’m not a fan of the fish, that’s why.

This new one is also priced at RM1.5o each…but if I were to fork out that kind of money, I think I would stick to the one with the sotong. What about you?

FOOTNOTE: TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN
Kindly be informed that I will most probably not be available in Sibu from the 16th of December until the 20th of December, 2011 so hopefully, if you are planning to come and visit, please avoid the aforementioned dates. Harap maklum. Sekian, terima kasih.

  1. What I would do for a good nasi lemak in Sydney. Other than flying back to Malaysia!

Will be back in Sibu sometime next year, you would have to bring us around for nice food.

No problem, the pleasure will be mine. Just give me a tinkle when you’re back in town – the number’s still the same… :) So far, I think the nasi lemak here is the best in town – despite being in packets…so the condiments are quite limited…but tastewise, I haven’t come across any in the shops that I would say is better.

  2. RM 1.50 for that? So cheap!.. I think I wouldn’t want my sambal to be extra spicy. I like spicy food but not too spicy. I’ll be in Sibu from December to January. Hehe.. Still about a month and a few weeks to go

These are ok, not really spicy. The lady with the spicy sambal has left – I loved hers…the spicier the better! LOL!!! ;) Ya…can’t wait to come back and eat all these eh? :D

    • Suppose to be studying now hahaha but I’m in a procrastinating mode.. so here I am replying your comment…

Hehehe, I find it extremely funny to watch those who can’t eat spicy food. Their reaction..hilarious! Yea, I can’t wait to be back home. I will finish my exams in about a week then I have one month of boredom here before I’ll be back to Sibu. We will definitely meet up yea? *back to study now :D

Sure hope we’ll get to do that. Ok…back to your books now! Study hard…and all the best in your exams.

  3. What happened to the pyramid shape nasi lemak? Time changed, people changed, nasi lemak also changed its traditional triangle so this is what, nasi lemak 3.0? Bro going places for Xmas celebration?

Nope, friend’s son’s wedding…and very good friend’s birthday the very next day…so staying on for that. Will be home for Christmas…unfortunately. Whatever shape does not really matter to me – as long as the contents taste great.

  4. Nasi Lemak’s one of my all-time favourite food. So where are you going 16-20 Dec? I know I’m nosy.

See my reply to Bananaz… LOL!!! :D

  5. oh, that makes a nice breakfast.. maybe the one with sotong tastes nicer?? so where are you travelling to 16-20 December??

See my reply to Bananaz… ;) The one with the sotong – the sambal is very very nice, my favourite…and that’s the thing that makes the most difference other than the rice. Everything else would be the same.

  6. I like the nasi lemak with the fish..

Not me. Don’t like the tongkol fishy smell…

  7. i love nasi lemak.. with chicken usually.. :)

Ya…we had nasi lemak with chicken rendang or fried chicken wing – RM2.50 – which means RM1.00 for the chicken. That is really cheap… But I haven’t seen those at the stall for a while now… :(

  8. What is ikan tongkol? I’m not familiar with the fish name, probably if I see it.

Does it have a lot of bones?

It must be a lot of work to individually pack the peanuts and anchovies into one sachet and the sambal into another. Heh.

I think ikan tongkol is a variety of mackerel – with a strong smell…like sardine. I don’t mind the smell of sardine but not tongkol. I prefer tenggiri. If I’m not mistaken, they grind tongkol or kembong to pulp for Penang assam laksa… Ya, they need not have bothered. Everyone would mix everything together eventually and eat…

  9. Ooooo….hubby would love this post..he’s a die hard fan of nasi lemak and he prefers the small packets with sambal and a piece of telur dadar. The sambal must be extremely good though. Remember we bought 2 packets at Bandong?…they were pretty good too with sambal sotong…Yum!!
Mana mo pergi jalan in Dec?…your birthday gift to yourself, is it?

We bought 1…and got the other one free…and the same with the not-as-nice nasi kerabu. Special offer as it was past 11, almost noon. So imagine. RM1.50 for two packets – works out to about NZ30 cents each – where to find in Auckland hor? Muahahahahaha!!!! :D Yup…the sambal’s sotong is the best, if you ask me – the others may be pretty good but can’t beat that one.

December? See my reply to Bananaz… Mana ada birthday gift ? Perlu korek-korek deep-deep into my empty kocek… :(

  10. Ooo…u coming to KL? If you do, hopefully we can meet up together with other hantus…LOL!!!

Not too sure, tickets booked…but cannot be really sure until the actual time comes. Very tight schedule…so dunno if there is time for other side attractions. Would love to meet ALL at one go…if everybody doesn’t mind being with everybody else. That seems to be a problem over there… :(

  11. Ooooh, love it that it’s LONGER! :P

And also love the fact that our Sibu icon have to announce his disappearance from Sibu so that others will know how to reschedule their visits! Bravo!!

Psst.. coming to KL? It’s high time we actually meet up! :P

Long not always the best lah, it’s the quality that’s most important. So big, so long, tak syiok…also will not enjoy. Muahahahahaha!!!! :D Ya…would love to meet but nothing’s confirmed right now – other than the air tickets. Very tight schedule, don’t know if there’s time for much else. Always the case – once, somebody had to gatecrash the party…just to drop by to see me and say hello…and have a photo taken with me… LOL!!! :(

  12. Ikan tongkol taste very fantastic and it’s usually eaten with nasi dagang! Yum YUMZ!!

Exactly the reason why I’m not fond of nasi dagang… I don’t like the fish. :(

  13. 1.50 is very cheap..but why want to waste money on the small plastics? When i see the plastics inside the food, normally i wont buy.. i prefer them on the rice itself..
OK, your footnote telah diterima… will not go during that period *grin*

The one for the kacang and ikan bilis is actually unnecessary. Some people prefer to mix the sambal with the rice themselves in just the right amount – would not want the rice to be drowned by the sambal – that’s why they pack it separately. I don’t mind as I will mix it all together before eating so it makes no difference to me.

  14. These days, not many people sell nasi lemak with that price. Those packed ones are really nice, esp when still hot and freshly packed. Makes you forget you’re on a diet. lol

No? How much in Kuching? Of course, if you eat at the coffee shops, they’re more expensive…like RM2.50 or 3.00. You may get more – like a fried egg or a fried chicken…but so far, I have not come across any really nice ones where the rice and the sambal are concerned. These packet ones are nicer…and cheaper.

  15. The nasi seller would have a big fan if he/she operated near my home, coz I’ve never heard of rm1.50 pkt with sotong! Harap maklum. Sekian, terima kasih. Lolz
    +Ant+

I thought you can get RM1…or RM1.20 over there? So very cheap. They always say that ours here are more expensive. Hey! Aren’t you KL based? How come you never propose meeting up with me like the rest? Wah…sombongnya!!! :D

  16. i prefer the banana leaves wrapped nasi lemak. The brown wrapper look more like nasi ayam. haha..

So far here…it’s a choice of the brown paper or those in very tightly-squeezed compact plastic bags (usually sold in the markets and also school canteens here) – never bought these, not so nice…

  17. Adoi, please flip through your old posts and see my comments…… my invitation stands infinitely. I will bring you for a bakuteh extravaganza!! ^_^
    +Ant+

Yum! Yum! Hey…I thought you’re vegetarian? I eat, you just sit there and watch? LOL!!! :D

Eh… u coming to KL? That’s nice… come for vacation? Or people’s wedding? I’m not sure if I’ll be around during those dates… nearly Xmas time, mebbe I’ll be with my parents.

See my reply to Bananaz – friend’s son’s wedding and my very good friend’s brithday the next day…and flying back right away the day after. Dunno if there’s time to squeeze in anything else…and KL, not like Sibu…small town – can go to so many places, do so many things, eat all kinds of stuff…in just two days! Right, Shereen? LOL!!! :D KL…on the road alone already half the day gone… :(

    • 2 days not enough lar in Sibu…lol!get to eat kampua twice only…tu pun kena share…tak puas like that…hahahaha.

Hah!!! Now you know! Before datang that time, sure said 2 days more than enough for this little town… This is Sibu, you know. Don’t play-play! Muahahahaha!!!!! But better than KL – half the time wasted on the road… :(

I’d prefer sambal with cockles and plenty of curry gravy topping my nasi lemak.
    P/s: no more rm1nasi lemak here. . .:-(

I wouldn’t mind cockles sometimes for a change – can’t eat too much, high lead content…or curry chicken but I would not want to drown the rice with curry gravy. Then you can’t taste its lemak anymore – would be like nasi campur, if eaten like that.

No more RM1? I thought people say got, or RM1.20…so cheap over there. Hey! Wait a minute! We have RM1.00 ones here too – same sambal, same taste but minus the sotong or the fish…and everything else the same – the rice, the ikan bilis and kacang, the thin slice of egg and t=cucumber. Those are RM1.00 each and I do buy them sometimes.

  20. i love this type of nasi lemak, small pack and sometimes can be very nice too. Usually, good one come in small pack? hehehhe

Coming to KL in December? See if can meet up ok. I am ok with everyone. *wink wink*

Ok, will let you know once confirmed definitely going… Ya, small pack…just enough for a light breakfast, not too heavy…and to one’s satisfaction.

  21. Yum yum! Nasi lemak! But why is the sambal packed separately? I’d prefer it to be laden all over the rice, the spicier the better! :D

They give a lot of the sambal actually…a bit too much, if you ask me. At times, I would be eating more sambal than rice…and I can’t really tell whether the rice is lemak and fragrant enough or not – they could have just given plain rice and nobody would be able to tell the difference – all drowned by the sambal already.

Besides, I guess there are people who would not want so much especially the ones who do not like it so spicy. By separating the two, these people would be able to add the amount that they like and will not be forced to eat it all.

  22. where are you off to ? holidays? Must be someplace really nice!

Oh, how come the nasi lemak kacang and sambal is packed in separate small plastics? Is that normal there?

What holiday? Only 4-5 days…. Hmmmm…..you didn’t ask whether we could meet if to KL? Tsk! Tsk! :(

    • oops just saw your reply to iamthewitch on the separate packing. lol!

Ya…have to read through all the comments….or come early to comment then the others will have to read yours before commenting in case question already answered. ;)

  23. Waaaaaah.. Nasi Lemak.. I’m going to buy one and show off to you later in the morning :D I think it costs RM1.50 or probably RM2.00

    Come…come…let’s see what you’ve got! LOL!!! RM1.50′s the same as here… :D

  24. wah u have to put yr traveling schedule on yr blog, so femes!

In case anyone is planning to come to Sibu around that time. Has happened before – bloggers from Kuching and they went to all the wrong places and thought that the food here was not nice at all…until the last night when they checked my blog and went to one restaurant I had featured…and they loved everything there! Like every place else, come here…must know where to go for the good stuff – not all the same.
