How do I say the name of this Indian delicacy?

*recycled pic*
Vadai or wadai? Vadei or wadei? I’ve noticed how some Indians seem to pronounce “v” as “w” and so they will say things like ”wery good” or “wirus“, the same way as some Chinese have a problem with “r” and “l” and hence the very stale joke that we always hear about them eating “flied lice“. Anyway, whatever it may be called or pronounced is not a big deal to me – I just call it kuih dhall…and eat it.
I love eating these but the best ones must not be too hard and what I love most is the fragrance of the herbs and spices in it. I bought some for my Kiwi sister-in-law to try when she was here but she did not like it – I guess she was quite put off by its exotic taste, something which she obviously had not acquired.
Now, there’s something new at the Bandong stall that I frequent in the morning – these cucur dhall (dhall fritters)…

I do not know the ingredients used but of course, there would be a need for some batter and dhall…and I think I can detect a hint of some udang kering (dried prawns) but very little of it (which comes as no surprise as it is so very expensive) and onions/spring onions…

These are fried till golden in colour…

…and sold at only 4 for RM1.oo. Good grief! Only 25 sen each – just NZ10 cents, Shereen!!! Yum! Yum!
I love them so much that I’ve been going back there morning after morning to buy some but unfortunately, they are often sold out by the time I get there. Hmmmmm…I wonder if this post will get Cleffairy running to the kitchen to make some of her corn fritters right away. LOL!!!

Jahat betul u! Kesian Shereen la… why tempt her like this? Pity that woman la… But now I’m tempted to make some of these too… wakakakaka… Diwali coming lehhhhh… so syok ah! Tunggu open house invitation. Wakakakaka!

Oooo….Diwali’s coming – only a few days away. No Indians here…or the few that we have, I don’t know them so it will pass like any other day. Sobsssss!!!!
Enjoy yourself… Tsk! Tsk!!
Shereen must be jet-lag or her internet kaput kot? My Screamyx is going bonkers these few days, and I get really fed up of coming online. Still waiting the TMnut fellers to come and check the cable and stuff. Cannot load anything! So geram!
Must be a problem all over. My neighbour also grumbling away on Facebook – gets disconnected all the time, have to reconnect again and again… Celcom not much better – I’d just log off and do something else instead.
Mana ada jet lag…my vacation was more than 2 weeks ago lar…mo mati if jet lag…kahkahkah!! Internet in NZ no problem one…we pay through our nose for data…so very fast one and Kiwis kuat complain, so the providers very kuai one. I am also not sulking…so biasa already kena torture by Arthur!!! Just balik late last night from visiting my girl’s mommy in the middle of North Island and have been joining the fun at party central today for the big game between the All Blacks and the French pondans.
Humph!!! The All Blacks had better win or I’ll put up the jersey for auction on eBay!!! Muahahahaha!!!!

I knew it! See! I know you so well now…Hehehehehehehe!!!!
Should have saved the satay’s kuah kacang from yesterday. It would have gone very well with the cucur jagung. TSSSSKKK!
I just bought 3 tins – wee’s satay sauce…day before yesterday. Want one? VERY nice… Don’t bother buying the other brands e.g. Ayam or Sunstar… It has got to be wee’s!
Haha I dunno how to call them. I just know how to order and eat! U got me craving for some indian kuihs. Hmmm samosa hmmmm!!!! Penang’s Little India has some cheap, good ones! *droolszzzz*
Nice Indian makan shops there too – but I got put off by the loud blaring music…and the smell. LOL!!!
it’s the sound and smell that make it truly Indian LOL!
Yup…they should retain and preserve that… Just that I’m not used to it – hardly any Indians in Sibu, you see.
Yes, the first time hubby and I went to Sibu and during the transit at Kuching, he was surprised to see not a single Indian at the airport. Then I told him that he won’t even see a single Indian during his trip to Sibu (as there were too few) and it was true.
Ya…even worse in Sibu compared to Kuching. There, at least quite a number at places like India Street…
I love cucur..my favorite..
Not too much and not hot from the wok – sore throat!
There is a stall near my area which sells crispy fried stuff (indian) each afternoon… really fresh, they do it there and then.. and many choices too… one day u must come and try… hahahhaa…
Over there, so many Indians…no problem getting these. My daughter also liked the stall across the road from her institute in SP – other things, she did not miss…only the Indian uncle and auntie. LOL!!!

Me sotong, don’t have lah…but post on keropok sotong coming soon.

Soli execute me pleaze its typo supposedly to be 5sen not 2sen slipped of the fingers no fault of the mind. Not eaten brunch yet guess fingers not steady. After a cup of ‘cham’ would be more soon soon..~;).
Yalor…by our time, where got things 2 sen one? You mesti 1 sen like gu-chia-lin (kereta lembu punya wheel) one! Muahahahahaha!!!!!
eh, i love that cucur dhall! Can eat truckloads of it on a good day.
Btw have a good weekend STP! Sunday, a day of rest!
A truckload!!! Aiyor…the vendor can just do your business, kaya raya already lor! LOL!!!
I am CRAZY over Vadai! I can eat 3 at one go by myself. I like those that is packed with spices and dried chillis. The hotter the better! Oooo have it with a cup of HOT teh tarik will send me to heaven! The cucur dhall looks absolutely mouth watering delicious. How come they don’t sell that at the store I used to buy the vadai from? I must try to convince her to sell this.
I usually buy RM1 as well…and eat the three. If I buy RM2, also will finish one… Cannot stop, once started. The cucur is nice too…and a bit cheaper.
My family and I like Va-dei (that’s how I pronounce it) but we love the other type where got lubang in the middle (looks like donut and makan with green chilli…don’t know the name) more.
The cucur dhall memang tengok darn good…meleleh air liur…hahaha. I think I’ll attempt to buat using your agak-agak recipe one of these days…celup with sambal tumis sure shiok one!!
Good luck! I’m sure it’s not hard to make. Ya, kucing’s hubs did mention the vadai donut too… Don’t have here lah! Two hands can count the number of Indians in Sibu, where can find all the macam-macam Indian delicacies? Got these already can consider lucky dah!
Psttt…I tengah makan mee daddy kari with spam…so shiok!…no more stock…sobs!
Hah? You too? I had it for breakfast this morning – SPAM with real bacon… Ooooo……sedapppp!!!! No more stock kah? Kesian…from now on, enjoy your Mee Maggi then…. Muahahahahaha!!!!
This post brought back childhood memories as I religiously bought vadek from the kacang putih lady in school everyday. I suspect my pimples popped out due to the “heaty” and oily vadeks. Lolz
25 cents, gossh super cheap!
+ant+
Ya…cheap hor! Normally, these kuihs, it’s 3 for RM1.00…or sometimes, two for RM1.00 even. Hah!!! Finding a scapegoat for your overactive hormones eh? People used to say “naik gatal”, so all the pimples pop out! Muahahahahahaha!!!!
I suppose Indians have problem pronounce ‘w’ as ‘v’. Like ‘Velcome to India’.
Oh? And when it’s “v”, they will pronounce it as “w”? Probably the interference of their own native language. Like the Foochows tend to add -ng to words e.g. come = khang and in = ing because of the nature of their dialect. This seems more evident in some dialects and languages compared to others.
So now I understand how Sarawak accent in Mandarin comes from. When I just came to Johor (where most people speak accurate Mandarin), I always got teased by hubby and his brother for having those -ng accents. Egg in Mandarin is ‘tan’ but I used to pronounce as ‘tang’. Plate should be ‘pan’, not ‘pang’.
Recently, Hubby told me he met one salesman from Kuching who had the same accent as me few years back. He wanted to tell a grower that the soil is acidic. “The soil is ‘shuang xin’” (acidic should be pronounced as ‘shuan’). The grower looked at the salesman in bewilderment, wondering how he could know the soil is ‘bisexual’ (‘shuang’ means two and ‘xin’ is sex/ gender)
Oh? So even the Mandarin is affected by the strong Foochow accent? I know it interferes with their English and also their Malay. I guess so because some of them can speak Hokkien but their Hokkien also has a heavy Foochow accent. I’m Foochow but I cannot speak the dialect – maybe some basic sentences but I can never manage the accent and intonation – the true blue Foochows will scold me for being such a disgrace. But these days, I’m not alone. It seems that the dialect (like all other dialects) is dying out – everybody is speaking Mandarin…so soon it will become extinct. Real sad…
The cucur dhall looks good! I get in some mornings with my nasi lemak too! It’s also RM 1 for 4 over here but I’m buying it from a mobile van that couples as a stall. Heh.
Ah! Same price eh? I hear the nasi lemak there can be even cheaper than here…but I guess they’ve a bigger market – more Malays…and many Chinese here are still not into spicy stuff.
Well, it’s also RM 1 in the stalls operating from cars (they just bring out a couple of tables and pack up after breakfast or lunch).
However my nasi lemak tends to be very expensive since I always have two fried eggs, one drum, blood cockles, sotong.
I would love to have nasi lemak like yours…but unfortunately, we can’t get it like that here. The closest to that would be a choice of masak hitam or curry…with the nasi lemak at the coffee shop near MAS office. I’m sure you remember that one?
Way too exotic for me. I’ll stick with the kampua and kompia.
There! Here’s one… LOL!!! Must be more adventurous – you don’t know what you’re missing.
I makan fried rice while william takes flied lice
I’m so looking forward to have some good Indian meals come this Deepavali
Oh? He speaks with a Chinese accent? So what does he call you? MeiLin? In the end, gets confused with Caroline… Hahahahaha!!!!
I like this “vadai” but I very much prefer the other indian delicacy…the one that looks like small donut, what’s it call, ah?
You come and ask me? Hardly any Indian here so can count ourselves lucky we can get a few Indian delicacies around here.
