It’s been a while since I featured anything from my regular Malay kuih stall at Bandong…but it does not mean that I have not been dropping by. In fact, I do stop by the place quite frequently in the morning on my way to my parents’ house to babysit my bedridden mum. The thing is that they would be selling more or less the same things that I’ve featured before so there is no point doing that again.
However, the other day, I bought these from the stall at 3 for RM1.00…

According to the lady, they are an Indonesian delicacy called bakwan. If it had been in the Hokkien dialect, bak would mean meat and wan or wang would mean meatballs. Thus, I would definitely think of those right away if anyone should mention bakwan to me. At least, in the case of the Indonesian bakso, there would be meat or meatballs in the dish.
But no, they’re definitely not meatballs, that’s for sure. Actually, they’re something like what the Chinese here call chai peah and inside, they have some taugeh (bean sprouts) and strips of spring onions or are they koo chai/chives?

They tasted all right…and I could sense a lot of pepper in them but they were a bit too salty for my liking and they were a tad too oily. It would be pretty good if they could reduce the salt a little…and drain off the oil on some paper kitchen towels or something.
I also bought these that day, a variation of the kuih talam, also 3 for RM1.00…

…which were all right, not too sweet but I certainly would prefer it to be more lemak – that is with a bit more santan (coconut milk).
These must be the cousin of the lipat pisang…

…made from tapioca flour with gula Melaka-sweetened grated coconut filling…

I’m not a fan of mashed bananas but I thought these weren’t too bad…

Now, in my opinion, these were VERY nice – the apom Milo…

I guess it is some kind of steamed cake and I loved the fragrance of Milo in it. The only thing was that they were 3 for RM1.00 as well…and for over 30 sen each, I must say that the slices were a little bit too thin.
Anyway, there are always so many things at the stall to choose from so it’s really no big deal. I can always choose to buy something else or not to buy at all…and the convenience of its location is a plus point as far as I am concerned.

The bakwan and lipat pisang look very nice. Where is the Malay stall?
What is the operating hour?
That’s at the Bandong shops, opposite the primary school. I think they open very early around 4 something in the morning…and they stay open till around lunchtime…but usually by around 8 a.m. most of the things would have been sold out so you would not get much left to choose from. Better go early…
Hey STP, did you “wallop” all these for your tea time session? These kuehs look like what I get over here in the canteen except for the first one.. they look good.. must be tasty.. but before I eat them, I will surely take the kitchen tissues and press on them first.. hahaha..
Ya…that was exactly what I did. Don’t like things so oily… No lah…I bought them on different days. Usually we see more or less the same things at all the Malay stalls and they all look nice…but some may be really disappointing. Like everything else, we have to know where to get the good ones…
wow..I simply love kueh!
Me too…. They do not compromise on taste – not like the Chinese ones. I wouldn’t buy those unless I know for sure they are really good.
i would love the one with coconut filling
I prefer the Milo one… Ah well, as they say, to each his own. LOL!!!
The bakwan really looks oily but deep fried foods are my favourite.
Apom Milo does sound delicious. 3 for RM1 is consider cheap. We can’t get anymore 3 for RM1 over here. All selling at RM0.40 each regardless of size ! Even fried banana are selling at RM0.40 for 1 ! Expensive ya.
My daughter too! Anything deep fried and she loves it hot…and then get sore throat. I’m ok with anything that’s nice… LOL!!!
I think cucur pisang here are 3 for RM1, dunno how much at the Malay stalls. Not a fan of banana fritters so I don’t usually buy unless my daughter is home.
oh i just love all these nyonya kuih, errr not nyonya but indonesian?? whatever lah, they just look so nice to me in the photo.. the bakwan looks good, i like it, and the kuih talam looks different from ours huh, we have a layer of pandan and a layer of coconut milk but theirs is a whole piece of pandan..
Ya, that’s why I say it’s a variation – they also have talam half brown and the bottom layer white, besides the green and white ones.
kuih muih, good for everyday makan. The sweeter the better, but take all with moderation
Yes, yes…everything must be in moderation… These days, so expensive…can’t indulge too much also.
eeeeeyeer.. so bad u Arthur! making me hungry now.. u know last time when i went for all those ramadhan bazaar, i took mostly the kuih muih only? i can eat all these and not touch the rice n rendang all if given a choice leh..
*tummy crying*
Hehehehehe!!! I’m sure not Ramadhan also available, no kah? Come, come to Sibu and you can feast on these and more…
Apom Milo sounds like it’s pretty tasty!
Hey, you remember a cake called Proton Saga cake that comes in rainbow colors? I had it as a kid, it was home made by a Malay for festivals, and it’s VERY sweet, full of condensed milk.
I love it.
…and I think I first had it when I went CNY visiting at your house!
My house? Gee! That must be when you were a cute and cuddly little kid. LOL!!!
You sure it wasn’t Holiday Inn? They give all kinds of fanciful names to their cakes. Some may be available at the Bandong stall that I frequent and others may be available on order. Will KIV that for the next time you come home – I can get them for you. Yup, their cakes are usually very rich and really heavenly… Yum!!!
I ‘d be very happy if I could have currypuff, onde onde, pulut sambal and kueh gulung (green oblong with sweet desicated coconut filling).
Hard to find stalls with 3 for RM1 nowadays. The stalls I buy from have raised to 40cts a piece.
+Ant+
I think they have all those at the stalls – standard price 3 for RM1.00. Kuih gulung…I call kuih lenggang – that’s the name we use in the family. Dunno why… The difference is in the pancake-like skin – some are not so nice.
Btw, watch out for the postman – dijamin sampai hari esok!!!
=.=iii kuih… I like all these kuih, and I get them regularly in the morning too…. but more often than not, I dunno the names of the kuihs… just tau makan only.
They’re all labelled…so I get to learn something new quite regularly. Wink! Wink! LOL!!!
oooooooh i lovvvvveeee these kuihs!!!! hard to find those chai peah here.
hungry oledi!!
Hard to find? Where are you? I thought you can get them anywhere – question of whether good or not, that’s another story.
hmmmm..i am not a kuih muih person. I don’t like things with grated coconut, either with filling or coated. I don’t mind having that “bakwan”, it’s look like “tie piang” to me. hehehehehehehe
Hahahahaha!!!! Foochow, true and true… My father wouldn’t eat these kuihs either…
Apom milo? Here no have *my opinion only knowing Bananaz not adventurous one* got apom balik. Think the bakwan is like our “hare chi” fried prawns cookies? Would eat them all for bfast, sometimes brunch and sometimes tea time maybe supper too haha
Aiyorrrrr!!!!! No regular proper home-cooked meals kah? So kesian… No wonder so slim! They say square meals make round people…like me! LOL!!!
RM1 for 3 kira okay la…the other day i bought rm2 pisang goreng. Was happy la when asked the fella RM1 can get how many pieces. He replied 4 pcs. Mana tau when i see it 1 pc of pisang was split into 4. …aiyo…means rm1 for a tiny bit of pisang. Kek sum
Here, I know the Chinese one – 3 for RM1…but they use pisang tanduk – the huge long type and they cut into slices to dip in batter and fry for sale as cucur pisang. Dunno how much they sell at the Malay stalls – those whole bananas. My daughter prefers those – pisang tanduk a bit sourish and she thinks it’s not as nice.
Wah, why food there so cheap one? I think it will cost 3 for SGD1.50 here at least =_=”
Singapore people so rich mah! Muahahahahaha!!!
Bakwan looks like okoy here in my country. My mom usually cook this as viand. Bean sprouts mixed with wet flour and dip with vinegar…yum yum. ^_^
Okoy sounds like or koi here…and that is our steamed yam cake. LOL!!! This is getting confusing.
Wah…have to get up early one kah…cialat lar like that!..hahaha.I think on Sunday can get up early as usually first day sleeping pattern ada sikit haywire.
The lipat pisang is not lipat pisang kan?…maybe cousins but looked very much like our kuih bongkong but without the air gula.Must try that lar…very curious ni.
3 pcs kuih for RM1.00 still cheap lar,Arthur.Nowadays mana boleh dapat…in Semenanjung, suey-suey pun 40-50sen sebijik kecik.
Yup…it’s not lipat pisang…and yes, usually, there would be gula Melaka inside. They may have that as well, not too sure. No worries! No need to wake up early – even though 5.00 a.m. here would be 10.00 a.m. NZ time… I can always go to buy and you can all have these for breakfast in the comfort of my home when you wake up.
Wah… love all these kuih la… sedap..
Hmmmm…but some nyonya kuihs in Kuching a whole lot nicer – the serimuka/kuih salad or the kuih cangkeh or the kuih lapis…. Yum! Yum! Or are you from Sabah? Not sure where to get the best kuihs there…
Kuih Talam and Apom Milo are my favourite, can nvr hv enough!
Ooooo….not too much sweet stuff. Have to control…
Ahhh… u are saying the same thing like my husband did, hehe!
Men. They do not let their heart rule their head…
Wow!…all looks nice. Chai peah goes well with chilli sauce. Yum!!..Yum!!…
These were a bit too oily and too salty…
