Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

You made me do it…

You made me do it, smallkucing! You put up a post on egg tarts and I just had to go and have these…

Mitsu Portuguese egg tarts

Oooo…what lovely Portuguese egg tarts these were! The pastry was so flaky that I just couldn’t help making a mess while eating them. Yum! Yum!

LOL!!! Actually, the truth is that my ex-student, Xavier, was leaving for KL on Sunday and then to the UK to further his studies and on Saturday morning, we went out for dim sum or what they call yum char at some places.

I took him to the old place which I feel is nicer than the new one – even though it may not be as cheap. We also had the char siew pao (barbecued pork steamed buns)…

Mitsu char siew pao

…and the steamed buns with butter and salted egg custard filling…

Mitsu steamed butter salted egg buns

…that I like a lot. Ooooo…so creamy, so very nice.

Xavier mentioned xiao lung pao (small dragon steamed buns) so I ordered them for him…

Mitsu xiao lung pao

…just in case. People say that if you’re travelling and you talk about eating something, you will just have to eat it. What a good excuse to gorge oneself with something, don’t you think? LOL!!! Well, personally, I’m not crazy about those as I don’t really fancy the very gingery soup inside.

Now, I really must get rid of my habit of looking around at what the other people are eating everytime I go somewhere. I saw this at one table…

Mitsu wat tan hor

…and of course, I just had to order it for myself. Oooo…wat tan hor!!! I guess that’s what it is called. All this while, I would just refer to it as Cantonese-style fried kway teow. It was just so-so – I would expect the kway teow to be slightly-browned or burnt for that very nice fragrance or what people call wok hei, if I’m not mistaken.

Then, when I went to the gents, I saw some people eating what looked like KL Hokkien mee. Now, I would have to try that but I guess that will have to wait till the next time I drop by the place…and don’t blame me for that! They made me do it! LOL!!!

  1. yay am first! cos i havent gone to bed yet hehe.

Oh dear! What are you doing up all night? @.@!!!

    • doing… nothing. LOL! nah just kidding. was doing some competition things. big cash prizes. must kiasu a bit. hahaha!

Wah! You people really rajin. I’m so lazy when it comes to these things…and I never have any luck anyway, so no interest. :(

  2. oh gosh…. what yummy egg tarts, custard buns, and wat tan hor! all my faves!!!

Yum! Yum! Coming over to Sibu? I can take you there… My treat, no problem! ;)

  3. Yahoooo…I’ll be there soon to join you and we can gorge ourselves silly..yeaaaa!!!The egg tarts memang look sedap, man…can see the many many layers..2 more sleeps and 1 more sleepless night and we’ll be there!…kesian you..lol!

Aha!!! You guys like dim sum? Hmmmm….now let’s see where I can squeeze this in the already fully-packed itinerary. LOL!!! :D

    • Itinerary penuh tak apa..we can tah-pau ma..hehehe

Now we have to increase the number of meals from 6 to 8 times a day… Muahahahahaha!!!! :D

      • Shereen, can forget about dim sum in Sibu, i think KL one better. hahahhahah
Just “concentrate” on Sibu speciality or foochow food. :) But Sio Bee is a must to try la, different from here. kekekekeke

She’s not going to KL…just to Sibu, so beggars can’t be choosers. Something is better than nothing. ;)

      • Thanks Annie…for looking out for me.Really appreciate that.I think Arthur has this evil plan of force feeding me..lol…but I like…hahaha…sick, I know!

Humph!!! You come here and you don’t eat – mesti kena rotan, like budak kecik last time. Ooooooo….you like that eh? Muahahahahaha!!!!!

      • Rihanna’s..sticks and stones may break my bones but chains and whips excite me, come on, come on…grrrrr!..lol…eee…sick!sick!sick!

Hmmmm….this calls for a visit to a pet shop tomorrow. I suppose you would like a collar too??? LOL!!! :D

  4. Gosh, those are my favs (I seem to have too many faves! Lol). My love for custard buns started during my uni days down under whereby those HK-run dim sum eateries served the best “lai yau paos”. Pity it is not the trend to serve it in KL.

Dear Art, if I happen to take up your offer to visit Sibu, this would be “the place” for brekkie! ;)
    +Ant+

Come! Come! When are you coming? Log into Air Asia’s website now…and see when you can get zero fare or very cheap fares – there may be an offer going on now…and anyway, off-peak season, the fares are usually very cheap. Try and see Firefly as well – flying from KLIA, not Subang…and not LCCT.

  5. butter and salted egg custard bao? it look so GOOD! what is it called in mandarin?

It is! Sooooooo good! Dunno what it’s called but I just ordered “nai yu pao” (butter bun) and got what I wanted.

That Xavier was tickled to bits when he heard me placing the orders in Mandarin – no choice, people here cannot speak English…and they can no longer speak in dialects (I only speak Hokkien). I speak nothing but English with my students – I guess that’s why the Mandarin-speaking ones avoid me like a plague and only those fluent in English would keep in touch and want to go out with me.

Have to be careful when pronouncing “nai yu” though as in Foochow, in a slightly different tone, it may refer to the female private part…I think. Muahahahahaha!!!!

    • Yes meh? Nai yu is bad word la, not female private part, i think is male private part!!! HAHAHHAHAHAHA

Yakah? Hahahahahahahaha!!!! My Foochow is worse than my Mandarin! Don’t really know – can say and use to scold people only. ROTFL!!! :D

P.S. Pssstttt!!!! What is butter in Mandarin? No wonder Xavier was trying hard not to burst out laughing. Blush! Blush! Thank goodness they did not serve me pao with that thing inside. Muahahahahahaha!!!! :D

  6. She made you do it.. you made me drool over it!!! These are what I love.. esp the last one..wantan hor… do you think I can sneak out now to have a plate?? hehehee….

Go! Go! I’m sure the Ipoh ones are a whole lot nicer… Yummmmm!!!! ;)

  7. And everytime whenever someone look at my dishes, I would stare back….. Irritating … hehehe

Aiyor…so garang! Imagine if I stopped to sample a bit and take photographs of what you eat. That would be hilarious! :D

  8. Ohhh. I love Lou Sha Pao, the custard filling pao, its salted eye yolk spurts when u take a bite…. oh, wish I can make one!!!!

Yes, my favourite… I love the hint of salted egg yolk in the butter custard filling. Yummmm!!!!

  9. The Portuguese egg tart too, looks delicious, the flaky crust is something hard to get it right(for me)! YUm YUM YUM!!!! Siu Long Pao… drooling, such a great post to start a morning for Dim SUm craze like me!^^

Hahahahahahaha!!!! So head over to the nearest dimsum place to appease your craving. Lots over there – not like here. Thankfully, the few we have are all quite good ones… :)

    • I already booked DI Wei Dim Sum of Empire Mall, but my luck aint good enough leh, due to the recent explosion, the restaurant will be closed for some times.:p

Count your blessings! Luckily you were not there eating your dim sum when it happened. LOL!!! :D

  10. the egg tarts and the custard buns are really nice!! now small kucing makes suituapui makes SK wanna go for some to~~ :D

Piak!!! I blame others and now others are blaming me… Sobssss!!!! ;)

  11. Dear food, you either don’t tempt me or stop making me fat!

Aiyorrrr!!!!! You’re so thin now. Once in a while would be ok – maybe on those rare occasions when you’re back in town? I don’t mind tagging along – you just pinch a bit of this and that to eat and I can help you finish the rest? ;) You’ll foot the bill, of course! Muahahahahaha!!!! :D

  12. i notice that your siu long pao is placed in egg tarts mould, so cute!! :)

once a while i like to eat dim sum too… but cant eat a lot cuz easily become jelak due to most of the dim sum are made of pork.. ^^

We only had the char siew pao…and the xiao lung pao, I only had one – not really a fan of that…so on the whole, not so much pork actually. ;)

  13. custard buns! i’m wanna get it soon, and you made me do it! :P

Piak! Piak! Another one blaming me… :(

  14. in cantonese the custard bun , i think we called it ‘lau sar’….cos the cream is oozing out when you have your first bite….but not my favourite because the cream taste salty right…It’s weird to have the salty cream…i ll prefer MANIS…lol!!

What’s “lau sar”? Ceret beret kah? What we call in Hokkien “lao sai”?Eyewwwwwwww!!!!! I think I will stick to “nai yu pao” (butter bun) and hopefully I can get the intonation and pronunciation accurately correct. LOL!!! :D Hah!!! I’m not really into sweet things, prefer savoury…

  15. what in the world?!

What is with all this dim sum thing going around?! Arrrgghhhhh!!

Smallkucing’s blog making char siew pau, you had siow bee that day, submerryn’s blog talking about dim sum too.. and i have not satify my dim sum craving… dim sum’s in singapore not good.. i have not found a good one yet T^T.

No? I’m sure there are some great places around – originals from HongKong some more…but of course, it would be a bit expensive. Never mind, people in Singapore all very rich… Can afford. LOL!!! :D

  16. Arthur! OMG, you are making me crave food from back home something serious! I can’t wait for December so I can be back in Kuching to devour everything in sight :) Maybe I should drop by Sibu and have you bring me for a foodie food tour!

From Kuching, are you? December? Not summer then, and you’re having holidays? Welcome, welcome…would love to take you around for the best in town. Just let me know when you’ll be coming… ;)

  17. She made you do it and you can’t resists temptation. Sibu serves nice dim sum.
Simply delicious!!!…the portuguese egg tart and steamed bun with butter & salted egg custard fillings. Ooozzzz!!!…so creamy… but mind you on the outlook of yr cholesterol level.

No nice places in Kuching? I’m sure there are… No worries, I can’t afford to go often – just on special occasion or when there’s a special reason like somebody’s in town or back on holiday or going off some place. That isn’t too bad…and definitely not as bad as kolo mee or laksa or kuih chap or whatever every day. ;)

  18. Dim Sum is one of the best creation in the food world :)
Just came back from Dim Sum lunch~

Hahahahaha!!! Good for you! In Singapore? Going to post on it? Was it expensive? Come, share with the rest of us… What we had that day, inclusive of drinks was around RM35 – quite pricey compared to the other place but I prefer the dim sum here.

  19. The cha siew pao in Good Happiness Restaurant (next to SMK Deshon) was good too. Was because it had been quite a while since I last went back to SIbu. http://anthonylaw99.blogspot.com/2010/07/good-happiness-restaurant.html …Tried it before, Mr Arthur? It puzzles me on why not many people going to the place for dim sum. I liked it much there. The price was somewhat a bit cheaper, it seems.

They still have it going? When they first opened, an uncle took my brother (home from Auckland) there…and they had difficulty even in trying to get some Chinese tea and they left without eating. It was such a mess…and I have not heard of anybody going there for dim sum since. Is it still running it in the morning? No problem, I can always drop by one day to give it a try – not far from my place. I love the Sibu Foochow style sio bee at that restaurant.,..and its parent at Lanang Road.

    • We were there early this year. I should say the service was quite good. The funny part was that they needed to get the drinks made upstairs and sure it would take quite some time before the waitress brought them over. It opened only till 10 am. By 9am , they would have stopped making dim sum and by 10am, most of the dim sum would have been sold. Can’t wait to see your future post on them…

Will have to wait. Some guests from NZ coming this weekend but I can’t take them there as I have not gone to try yet. Later, not nice… Can only bring them to places that I’ve been to and I am sure the food is worth the visit…

  20. Wahh those custard buns.. and the egg tarts! They’re my weak points… Haha.. now you made ME want to eat them!! :P

Piak! Piak! Piak! Another one blaming me! Muahahahaha!!!! :D Hey! Wasn’t it you who went for dim sum that day at some classy hotel…and you had egg tarts and durian tarts and everything? Chesh!!! Now,. look who’s blaming who…!!!! LOL!!! :D

  21. I am no fan of biscuits, roti, tarts, apom and those kuih muih, just don’t have the soft spots for it…

Oh? No wonder you are so trim and slim and handsome. Just look at me….body kembang like apom!!! Muahahahahahaha!!!! :D

  22. You know what, i don’t take egg tart, but i do take portuguese tarts!! It is yummy! Usually i will get my portuguese tart from Baker’s Cottage, those fresh from the oven, tsk tsk tsk. I think tomorrow morning i should go and get some for my breakfast.

I like this type of char siew pau, more fluffy and taste nicer.

Oooo…Baker’s Cottage. Must be nice! The ones here are good too and the char siew pao as well. My nephew from Auckland would want to eat those for breakfast every morning when he was here – that means ok lah…if compared to those original HongKong ones in Auckland…and I’m sure they’re a lot cheaper here. ;)

  23. And you are making me drooling for dim sum. hehe….. Over here, we have the egg tarts applied with a thin layer of kaya at the bottom. Delicious !!! Now, am really craving for some…

Yum! Yum! Don’t blame me… I did not say anything about kaya… LOL!!! :D

  24. I don’t like egg tarts cause of the pastry but this looks really really good. And ooooohhh te custard buns.. Yum yum yum.. Btw, I might know Xavier (not personally) but his younger sister was my classmate. :)

Younger? Nope…he has one older sister who got a scholarship to study in Korea – top student in St E. The pastry for Portuguese egg tarts is different from the normal ones. I like both but my daughter prefers this…

  25. *innocent look* the TK egg tart memang sedap mah.

anyway, I made some CSP ytdy. Looks ugly la but can eat lo kakaka…needs more practice

Did you tell anybody you were making? Got pantang, you know… Cannot tell people – you tell people, then tak jadi. Can let people know after already made and cooked. LOL!!! :D
