Ramadhan is the fasting month for the Muslims prior to the celebration of Hari Raya Aidlifitri on the first day of the following month, Syawal. This is the time when they must refrain from eating and drinking from dawn to dusk, something that certainly would require a lot of self-control.
The non-Muslims, of course, would not need to fast except that during most of the day, all the Malay makan (eating) shops and stalls would be closed so it would not be as easy as on other days to go and eat a plate of nasi lemak or mee jawa and stuff like that. However, the Ramadhan Bazaar will open here, there and everywhere in various parts of town at around 3 or 4.00 p.m. in the afternoon selling all kinds of food…so even non-Muslims would need to exercise some degree of self-control too and refrain from over-indulging in all the delicious stuff that they have to offer. Their main concern isn’t so much the money spent but the weight gained within this one month. LOL!!!
My missus went to the main one in the town centre the other day…and yesterday, we went to the one at Bandong – my favourite haunt for all the Malay kuihs and the roti canai in the morning and the mouth-watering Malay dishes around lunch time.
There were quite a number of stalls including this one that sells ayam madu panggang (barbecued honey chicken)…

…and this one selling fried kway teow (flat rice noodles)…

…or this one with all the fritters, cakes, buns and puffs…

You can see the freshly-fried keropok lekor (fish cracker) and cucur pisang (banana fritter) among all the things available. My regular roti canai man was there busy making his roti canai kosong, roti telur and murtabak for sale and my favourite Malay food stall was open too. I did not buy anything from them as I can easily have those anytime in the year. I saw a stall selling Sarawak’s specialty, the daging masak hitam and the ethnic Iban (Dayak) delicacy, the ayam pansuh…

Normally, this is stuffed in bamboo tubes and cooked beside an open fire, the way people cook lemang but this lady does it in a pot and sells it at a much cheaper price. I bought RM5.00 worth from her but at the time of writing, I have not tried it yet so I cannot give you my verdict.
My regular kuih stall was open for business too…

…and seemed to attract quite a crowd. I saw a lot of nasi (rice)…

- the nasi kerabu with a choice of either fish or chicken, the nasi dagang (the ones on display are covered with cling wrap) and then, I spotted these – the pa’is telur ikan…

- fish roe/eggs marinated with all kinds of leaves and stuff and wrapped in banana leaf and cooked over an open fire. I bought one at only RM2.00 to try…and it was pretty good, I would say though you would not see me rushing out to buy some more, that’s for sure.
There were still a lot of stalls in the vicinity selling all kinds of things but the heat was unbearable and pretty soon, I was beginning to feel a headache coming. Thus, I left the place quickly and headed back to the comfort of my own home. Well, if I should drop by the place again one of these days, I’ll be sure to keep everyone posted. Stay tuned…

I like the title of your post. I would definitely need to have plenty of self-control if I was strolling in the bazaar.
Retro – Laura Brannigan’s song. Yes, like the caption of the banned tv commercial says, “Please don’t get carried away!”
Like patience, self-control is unfortunately also not one of my virtues. Everything looks so delicious, I wouldn’t be able to control my self. I look forward to reading your next visit to the bazaar.
Young man – throwing caution to the wind. I guess it gets better with age. Hehehehehe!!!!
I must go visit my Perak stadium.. this is the once a year affair where they hold all the stalls in one place and with so many choices…
At one place? Wouldn’t it be so very crowded? Parking no problem? I wouldn’t go if parking is a pain…and it’s crowded and if the weather is so very hot. Malas.
There are 100 stalls over.. i guess.. normally one residential area, they will hold a lot of stalls in one place.. the stadium near my place is very suitable.. lots of empty spaces for parking…
So did you go? Looking forward to your post on it.
haha, yeah, really lots of nice food available in the bazaar ramadhan.. and you are right, it really needs a lot of self-control else you end up eating more than you normally do if you’re placed inside that environment with mountain-loads of food, haha!!
Luckily the weather here is very hot these days…so I would think twice about visiting the stalls. No dangerof overeating this Ramadhan…
Egg Roe, tht’s Juan Juan’s favourite! I love nasi kerabu, over your place there selling so cheap!!! Here with 2 side dishes can cost mre thn RM6!>_<
Hehehehe!!! We poor people here mah! Cannot sell too expensive, nobody will buy. LOL!!!
Juan2 loves fish roe? Eeeeee….interesting! Most kids would not touch that, I’m sure. LOL!!!
Neither I would touch that… she also like fish eyes(the larger the better) and chicken feet, I don’t like tht too… weird taste!
Eyewwww….she certainly has very peculiar tastes for a little girl…but she’s so cute, so adorable. LOL!!!
Huhuhu…I HATE YOU, ARTHUR WEE!!!!!…and what’s worse I’m fasting too today!!!Beh tahan see all those kuih-muih and of course my favourite nasi kerabu ( they got give the budu or not? ).Psstt…the kuey tiau look so damn good!!!…sure sedap.Meleleh air liur, man!!!
Muahahahahaha!!!! I knew it! I knew you would be pulling your hair out. Fasting? Why? Going for blood test or what? The kuih stall opens everyday around 3 or 4 p.m. so we can drop by when you are here…but not the kway teow…and the kerabu – let’s see if your luck is good, they may have them at the kuih stall in the morning. Not very long to go now – you’ll be here soon. Hehehehehehe!!!!
Evil, evil man…muahahaha. No lar…fasting just suka-suka as I know I’ll be stuffing my face with food very soon:)
ROTFL!!! This is fun! Hehehehehe!!!! I must go to the stalls again soon so I can torture you some more. Hehehehehe!!!
*high 5* Shereen. I oso puasa… I usually do during ramadan. I feel syok… got excuse tak payah masak and the hubby will beli me food to feed me. Most syok is everyone will teman me makan during sahur and during breaking fast time… good family time leh… usually if tarak puasa, nobody will bother to sit at the table… buat hal sendiri! Geram!
The family that eats together stays together. I always insist on that – no eating in front of the tv and other nonsense like that. Tsk! Tsk!
kekekke…..people lose weight but we gain weight this month pulak!!!
LOL!!! Self-control!!!
i miss having ayam percik T^T. Roti John… Satay >.<;
No ayam percik in Sibu…or I did not see any at the bazaar and I don’t like roti john. Satay…I just had that the other day. Slurpssss!!! LOL!!!
I love nasi kerabu. The sourish tamarind gravy add with sambal…………..craving for some now. But can’t find at my place here. Not that I know of.
Yum! Yum! I did not buy the kerabu though as I can easily have that on ordinary days- looking for something special, something different.
Guess what? So far I haven’t even been to any pasar ramadan
The jam and the difficulty to find car park is turning me off. Not to mention the crowds and the heat! Oops I’m so spoiled
lol!
You’re telling me… So high class, sure you do not want to go to such places. Hehehehehe!!!!
i hv no time to visit any pasar ramadan
Too busy with your business. But never mind, the money keeps rolling in – that’s more important.
not very keen on going for bazaar this year .
News has it that somebody died from eating food from the bazaar in Klang. They really should do something about the cleanliness at these bazaars and also the permanent roadside stalls in the peninsula. All the flies and nobody seems to be in the least bothered about them!!!! Tsk! Tsk!
ya lo…lalat everywhere. They dont even bother to swat away or put candles…
I wonder how they seem to be so comfortable in the presence of the multitude of flies. Tsk! Tsk!
Food look so tempting! Maybe i should really go and check out the bazaar soon! Around my area, i think there are a few bazaar, one big one, some are smaller version. *hungry*.
Maybe i should check out bandung when i am back next week.
Yup…pick a day next week and we can go together.
You are making me hungry with all these bazaar food! I’ve not been to one this year but I’m really craving for some murtabak now.. nice or not nevermind! haha..
Yes, my roti canai man makes very nice murtabak too – RM2.50 beef or chicken… Yum!
tQ for sharing the bazaar shopping Bananaz malas to go, no parking, crowded rather stay in makan biscuits also can..haha
I guess they all look the same to you, anyway – no colour! LOL!!!
Funny hor..here the Malay shops won’t close one leh, i asked them, they said they must cater to the sick and the children, too, sensible now.
Hhaahha, i was just thinking of posting some ramadhan pictures one,, but now i have a problem, how can i do best to post better than you did here leh?
Some Malay stalls (especially those in the Chinese areas)are open for business…but here, very few Malays…and very few Chinese will go and eat Malay food. Very traditional Chinese, cannot eat pedas, don’t like belacan and things like that…like Annie-Q!
So even if they open, they would not have very much business. But many are learning though…so that’s why you see the people at the Ramadhan Bazaar – mostly Chinese now.
You can also post your photos what? After all, many of your blogger friends do not frequent my blog – not handsome and hunky like you, so nobody wants to come by. Hehehehehe!!!!
I do fast every now and then during Ramadan… quite good for me… I mean… for detox-ing purpose and stuff, and i enjoy the waktu berbuka and sahur very much… (cuz got excuse to make my family sit with me and teman me makan)
I think… if u are sincere to puasa, it would not be such a task…it’s kinda fun, in fact… something to look forward to with family at the end of the day.
ps: Actually malas masak… so puasa got excuse masak once a day aje. *golek golek*
I fast during lent and yes, can feel the detoxification effect – quite instant, the every next day…but other times, not motivated to fast.
Very good effect, actually. i feel much more refreshed when puasa… so since everyone else is puasa-ing, it is easier for me, less temptation… kakakaka…
Trouble with me, when I’m fasting…extra-hungry and lagi think of food more! Tsk! Tsk!
I have been skipping lunch these few days. Kinda like fasting too I guess. My Muslim friends (the Flagstaff boys) invited me to join them for dinner through out the fasting month provided I pay my share of the ingredients. Good food and company. How can I say no? Money surely can’t buy that
Yes, Bubu mentioned that. Of course you have to contribute your share – contribute more also never mind. Like I always say, after all, it’s only money…and what’s a bit of money between friends. Some things, money just can’t buy.
Hey is that your Melissa up there?
That’s the beauty of pasar ramadhans – the sights, sounds, smells and total lack of self-control. Nevermind, once a year only mah..
Yup, that’s my girl all right. Yes, just once a year – butI do wish the weather isn’t so hot…so lazy to get out of the house.
Oh yes, the same as you, I need to control myself as I tend to think of the ramadan bazaar as every evening approaches. My all time favourite is still nasi kerabu, dagang and tomato.
+Ant+
I have not seen nasi tomato…but I did see a stall selling very nice-looking bryani. Hmmmm….must look out of a few things on my next visit to the stalls.
i’ve always love bazaar..:D..BUT hate it when i dont hav self-awareness..always ended up bought too much n wasted.
Don’t worry. I’m sure you’re not alone. My missus would be another one just like you unless I’m around to nag…nag…nag…just like an old grandmother. I think she prefers going alone. LOL!!!
I think Ramadhan could be a good reason for most people to get fat- before, during & after. There’s just more interesting food turning up! It’s not a real thing at all! Hahaha.
Ya, they certainly seem to be so carried away with this buka puasa thing that even the hotels are cashing in. Buka puasa buffets at shockingly astronomical prices – I’m sure they do not indulge like that on normal days. This certainly looks like there’s a whole lot of feasting going on during the month when there’s supposed to be abstinence and moderation.
i’ve got no self control at all. If i were to jalan here, sure buy this buy that then reach home scratch head asking myself why buy so much
I think I’m more disciplined and far-sighted than that. I would just buy enough for dinner…or if there are some very nice things, I would buy and keep in the fridge to eat the next day. No need to cook…
I refrain myself from buying kuih-muih from the bazaar….because it either too sweet or tasted weird. The most secure is to get curry puff or popia…hehhehehehe
Popia? Eyewwww….no good ones here unless we make our own, and those made by the Malays, no need to give it a second look.
normally i’d stop at the kuih-muih stalls. been craving for these all the time! hehe
I’d take the chance to sample stuff that I would not be able to find on normal days. The kuih stall is open every day in the afternoon…so I can have them anytime, would not bother to buy them during puasa month.

Hardly ever buy food at the pasar malam. This stall that I frequent is ok as they always put everything in plastic bags (though not very good for the environment.)..and after all this time, I have not encountered any problem. The Malay food stall around lunchtime in the same vicinity is good also – they always keep the food covered.
I’ve seen those stalls in KL and also Penang and Kedah where the food is all exposed and the flies are hovering over it…and yet there are people eating. They must have steel tummies not to end up with food poisoning eating in such unhygienic conditions.Even at the nasi kandar shops – the food’s not covered…but strangely, at those shops, there are no flies. I wonder why….
