Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

Puzzled…

There’s this new place in town…

Thai Chicken Rice

…the Thai Chicken Rice, located in the block of shophouses somewhere across the road from the Sibu Public Library (where the Bank Pertanian office formerly was).

My missus and I dropped by for lunch on Sunday and the place was crowded – business was very good, to say the least. It did not matter much though for the service was very  efficient and we were attended to in a jiffy.

They had run out of fried chicken so my missus had the steamed ones, RM4.00 inclusive of a big plate of chicken rice….

We were also given this complimentary bowl of soup and ultra-diluted curry gravy…

I ordered the pork leg combo (RM6.50)…

…which also came with a plate of chicken rice and we shared one stewed egg (RM1.00) between the two of us…

Iced black coffee (kopi-o-peng) was RM1.40 which is more or less what they charge at some coffee shops around here.

The food was all right, servings a bit small but substantial enough for a light lunch and anyway, one can always order more things from the menu but what puzzled me greatly then and until now, I am still unable to figure out is – what is Thai about the place? Can anybody enlighten me?

  1. Good morning arthur! I missed CR!

Morning, Papakucing… No CR in Indon kah? Come, we start one there – sure kaya one… ;)

They oso dun have nasi lemak there… the last time I met him and family he told me he missed nasi lemak and say there dun hv nasi lemak. So kesian….

Never mind. Big money rolling in, that’s the most important thing! :)

  2. For those prices,ok lah really cos here in Penang one Thai CR in one run down coffee shop already charging RM4.00 for one small plate…good choice for sure

No complaint about the prices or the food – all reasonable…just the name. No Thai food or anything of the sort leh? Maybe like the Japanese restaurant here (Sushi Tie – the owner’s surname was Tie), the owner’s name is Ah Thai… LOL!!!

  3. i think something is wrong with my browser today… your page is like corrupted here…but can still view your post…
    love the stewed Egg

Let me check. Looks ok from here. Looks ok direct access via another window…and also on my hp access via different server. Maybe something wrong at your end… Let’s see if there are anymore complaints.

  4. STP, if u remember, thailand is famous for its chickens… those days when I was “younger” … for 10rm, i can get around 15 drumsticks all fried nicely to be eaten! in Hatyai, you can find their steamed chicken hung up in the coffeeshops.. so i guess thai is not only on spicy food.. :)

Thai chickens? Muahahahaha!!! Oops…sorry! Old man’s mind short-circuit sikit. ;) Wah…they have it there and so cheap some more kah? Wks craving for it in Indonesia – looks like they do not have it there.

  5. I like the stew egg… at least the look is better than I found in Kuching. :)

I prefer the ones at Chopsticks, somewhere behind Delta Mall. The sauce is nicer…a bit.

  6. Aiya bozz surname is Thai Ah Kai nothing to do with sabai sabai OK can think outta box or not lolz. Heard of French connection before sorry dont have a slightest kai-dea why the Thai connection. Talk about chicken and massage think our Pete is more familiar muahaha.

Hahahahaha!!! I’m sure Pete can tell you where to get the juiciest, most succulent ones…. Muahahahahaha!!! :D

  7. i guess it’s in the owner’s name? something THAI something or maybe THAI something something? :S

Good thing they did not add “King” after that – the name of one of the candidates who lost in the recent election… LOL!! :D

  8. Just a name to attract customer ? No Thai style chicken with those Thai chili sauce and fresh onions spread on top ?

The steamed chicken look so small portion. A tad expensive at RM4.

Nope, nothing of the sort. Portion was ok – enough for my missus and me to share-share everything. She does not eat that much… ;)

Thai Chicken Rice…the towkay’s name and not something related to Thai food.

Aiyor!….the pork leg look so fat. Looks like there are some salted veg.underneath the meat. Correct kah?

Dunno – see my reply to annant’s comment. Ah yes!!! The salted veg! I LIKE!!! Very nice…and at the time, I wished I could eat it with porridge… :(

  10. Irene Tan said:

The name of the shop is very misleading…hahaha!…

Yalor…I went there expecting something different from the usual chicken rice shop.

  11. how come the steam chicken still a bit red in the bones?

Come and we go to the Bentong Chicken Rice in Kelana Jaya. SEdap and you can have all the soup you wish for. Their soup are great

Some people like it that way, not me…and they would bite the bones and chew and eat the bloody bone marrow….. They say only chicken like that can consider pass, others all fail. Eyew!!! I’m no vampire! Didn’t take the soup, so dunno good or not.

  12. I think u missed ordering the Thai dish lar, wakakakaka(just kidding)!

However your missus’s chicken looks so succulent, must taste really good and it’s cheap too! YUM!

Some say expensive, you say cheap. I think the price, portion, taste…everything ok. Nothing great but good enough should I feel like eating there again.

Near my places, even the hawker chicken rice with tht portion charges RM5 and above, what say u?! ;D

Where are you? Must be high class area…all the rich people around. Here, it is cheaper in the coffee-shop kind of places – this one is slightly nicer so I don’t really mind the slightly higher price…

Went through ur comments (hope that wasn’t rude), I see… I reckon Seremban standard is not as high as in K.L (K.L is mere parallel with Penang’s standard, right?)! ;D

Why rude? We’re supposed to share opinions via our comments…then we know more of one another’s places. KL and Penang are expensive…but there are places that are cheap too, it seems – just that visitors would not know and they would go to the “popular” places and get slaughtered. Never been to Seremban but somehow, I get the impression that Ipoh’s quite cheap…and Sungai Petani is so very much cheaper, maybe even cheaper than Sibu!

      • Alice Law said:

You know our Stadium Bukit Jalil, right? I live pretty close to it, in between Puchong and Sri Petaling (where Kathy always eat out)! ;D

My niece has a condo there but she never mentions anything about the food so I dunno much about the area. Puchong, I’ve seen a lot of posts – seems that the food there is so nice and so cheap…and Sri Petaling, Annie-Q took me there for dim sum. Dunno cheap or expensive, I did not pay. ;)

Yay, I’m going to IPOH next week, IPOH I mari liao!

Lucky you! Maybe you can meetup with Claire there and Elin. They’re such nice people. Wenn is there too but I’ve not met her before.

I am sure what you had was very nice but I cannot tahan to see the food presentation…sooo messy. If my late mom were to see that kind of serving, my mom sure will say macam kasi babi makan. You know la Nyonyas very cerewet when it comes to dishing up food. All must perfect. Anyways,I think the stewed egg very mahal la..sebijik for a buck!!…and the curry like longkang water leh…so cair. I am very sure your missus and even you can whip up an even decent chicken rice…Thai or not.

Aiyor…like that, when you come to Sibu, I have to be careful where to take you. Come back and see tomorrow’s post and you tell me whether the presentation can pass or not. LOL!!! I thought the chicken and the pork were ok…but the egg!!! How could they let the yolk drop off from the white? Sacrilegious!!! I was so put off by the sight!!! Potong berapa markah already there! Tsk! Tsk! :(

  14. The steamed chicken look very tender!

It was good…but not the best around town.

  15. Haha, pork leg combo! “Tu kar”.. must be really filling with the oil and all :P

I was thinking the same thing, thai? Did you see the other things on the menu? probably they had some Thai kerabu or something?

Didn’t really look at the menu but I don’t think I saw anything that was Thai on it. I would have ordered the kerabu if they had that. :(

    • Maybe the owner originated from thailand, so he figured, hey! If i am going to open a chicken rice shop, it will have Thai in its name no matter what! :)

Dunno. Like how they call Sarawak mee over at your side…and it is nothing like what we have here.

  16. Whenever I have Hainanese chicken rice outside , I always will like to make sure they have the boneless available and the maryland portion.

Ya…I think a few places here, they always debone the chicken first.

  17. Hmmm…any different from normal chicken rice? Ai..no pic of the rice? My gal love chicken rice be it roasted or steamed chicken….if she can she wish the mom to cook for her everyday…lol

No difference. Even the rice, I think there are better ones at some other places even though it was quite ok. We never cook chicken rice at home – not really a fan…but if eating out, we may consider that as one of the options to choose from. Actually went to try this one as it was new in town…and I expected something Thai. So disappointed! :(

  18. You know I was just going to ask you also, why was this place Thai when they serve nothing Thai? I was expecting to see Tom Yam or pandan chicken in there somewhere. LOL!

Exactly. Maybe I should drop by again to see if there is anything Thai at all. Did not notice any that day…

  19. Aiyak, Thai chicken, pak cham kai, no hair one some more…he he he

hv to wash brain liao! LOL!

Muahahahaha!!! You’re horrible, Pete! Chicken rice will never be the same again. :D

  20. heheheh..i am expect to see what is thai chicken rice all about. But it just look like normal chicken rice to me. I thought singapore chicken rice very famous in Sibu?

Yup! SCR doing very well here…but they say it also depends on which outlet you go to – the one at Lot 9 (opposite Delta Mall, the other side of Jalan Pedada) and the one opposite Premier Hotel are good.

  21. cleffairy said:

The chicken rice is not awfully tempting to me… hmmm… and as for the restaurant name, mebbe the owner punya name is Mr. Ah Thai? LOL!

Maybe… That would solve the whole puzzle.

  22. the chix from thailand? :)

Oops! Too late… I was going to say – hope Bananaz or Pete do not see this! :D

  23. Wee Art Thai or Ah Thai chicken doesn’t matter what as long as not black heart chicken kakaka..

This, I can’t understand. I only know black chicken is very nutritious, makes you strong like a lion. Wink! Wink! ;) LOL!!!

  24. Is the owner a Thai chinese? I guess there is not much difference, but the outlet I go to in Hatyai serves a wonderful chicken feet salad.

Wow, their kopi ais is even cheaper than the roadside Indon stall that you went to.
    +Ant+

Yup…by 20 sen…so that is one point to their credit! :)

  25. I thought they served Thai chicken rice!!! LOL! And i havent even heard of Thai chicken rice all my life!

diluted curry? still indian curries are ze best! :)

This was the very typical Chinese/Foochow curry we used to have from the shops before – nothing like what my mum used to cook. These days, at least, we do not get to see curry like this quite as much anymore… ;)

  26. so weird! no tomyam ah?? lol! chicken rice i will prefer hainanese one. :p

    This one’s obviously Hainanese…despite the name. :(

  27. LOL! Yeah, I was expecting Thai Cuisine in your post. But where were the Thai Dishes?

Maybe the reason why the place is called Thai because they import their chicken from Thailand. :-P

Oh no! Not again! LOL!!! Those people were twisting the term “chicken” to mean something else and making a joke out of everything… :D
