Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

Why does it hurt so bad (2)…

It’s the fasting month of Ramadhan and I see a lot of bloggers posting on the buka puasa buffets here, there and everywhere. I used to love those…a lot! And the best thing was that before I retired, I used to have week-long meetings that coincided with the puasa (fasting) month and our packages would be inclusive of those dinners EVERY NIGHT in the respective hotels in the evenings.

However, at one of those dinners, after feasting on all the lamb and the beef and what not, I chanced upon a very nice and friendly chef who was frying some kind of clams and they looked so very delicious. When he saw me drooling, he asked me if I wanted some…and of course, I did. He used the HUGE scoop and dumped a whole lot onto my plate. As I was walking away, he called out to me. I walked back to see what the matter was and he dumped another scoop on my plate. “That’s to save you the trouble of having to come back for more. It’s very nice!” he grinned…

That night, I woke up at around 2.00 a.m. with this unbearable pain in my knees and I found that I could not bend them at all. I could not even go to the toilet as I could not bend my knees to sit on the toilet bowl. I did not know what it was at that point in time as it was my first ever gout attack.

On two other occasions, I did not eat anything at all…but when I thought back about it, I realised that each time. I had a mug of beer the night before. Since then, I had refused to touch the stuff.

So far, everything has been fine. For one thing, you may take some prescribed medication to lower your uric acid level but once you have had an attack, there is nothing you can do…other than to take pain killers till it is all over. I find drinking a lot of water and urinating frequently helps.

Thankfully, I am still able to eat what I want to eat though I would have to be a bit careful. Even the simplest things may trigger an attack sometimes. On one occasion, I had prawn noodles – huge udang galah (freshwater prawns) and the following day, I was feeling a bit of discomfort. That day, I had this…

STP's fried bean sprouts with salted fish 1

…and that was it! I had another attack!

Yes, the high protein content of taugeh (bean sprouts) fried with ikan bilis (dried anchovies) or salted fish may just be that last straw to break the camel’s back.

STP's fried bean sprouts with salted fish 2

So, one thing’s for sure – no more buka puasa buffets for me…and from what I gather, they are definitely not cheap…ranging from around RM60 to RM100 per head. Sure, they have a world of choices to choose from but how much can one person eat? And in my case, if there is the chance that it may trigger off another gout attack, no…thank you very much!

    Yes, yes…5 a.m. LOL!!! ;)

Geezzzz…. all these mysteries is driving me nuts. Anyway…regarding to the dishes… lol… I can’t take them. The taugeh will make me angin like mad and my stomach will bloated like nobody’s biz… I was even admitted to hospital once becoz of damn taugeh when I was a kid. *shakes head* gave my parents such a scare!

Angin kah? Maybe it was indigestion? You were too greedy – just swallowed everything in a hurry without chewing? Muahahahaha!!! It’s supposed to be a healthy source of protein, cheap and nice to eat. I guess like everything else – must be taken in moderation… :(

    • cleffairy said:

No la…just took one spoonful and BAM…masuk hospital. LOL. Terrible, terrible…

Omigawd… I wonder why? Gee! You must have been a very difficult child to raise – real problematic, your eating habits.

      • cleffairy said:

Yea…I was a very difficult child to raise… not because I fight my parents or dun listen to what they say, but because I have a lot of growing pains. I very guai wan last time. My father glare at me abit oni I sked and feel like crying liao. But I have ssthma la, pneumonia la, bronchitis la… every month sure at least fever once or twice…(Thank God ah, my boy almost never get sick! One year fever once oso dun really have!)*pengsan* and worst of all… I was allergic to quite a lot of food.

Don’t know why oso… last time I couldn’t take any type of crustaceans too… itches like mad… whole body will itch and grow some sort of rash. Thank God, as I grew up…I became more tolerant towards certain food. I think those are growing pains… some children have it…I know I had em… but my younger sister didn’t have it. But she’s a bull to raise. Damn stubborn, fight my parents all the time and have nasty temper! I guess… God is fair! LOL.

Gosh! Thank goodness my daughter was ok – no problem despite her being a 6-month prem baby. Of course, she fell sick now and then but that’s usual for children – they’re building up their antibodies. She was a livewire though (despite the fact that she hardly ate and was very thin) until she went to kindy…and she became more quiet and progressively so as she grew bigger. Dunno why…

    • Cikgu…could it be gout?

Yup…that’s what we’ve been talking about all this while.

  4. hahaha. i woke up around 4am. lol. come and catch me. lol.
btw avoid the food that cause pain lol. it must hurt a lot, my dad also like that, until cannot walk:( and have to take painkiller too. ish…. so ke lian

Your father too? Mine is a borderline case… I just have to be a bit careful what I drink or eat – usually, ok. My MIL takes one thin slice of liver, habis… Cannot walk already. I think her case must be pretty serious…

    • cleffairy said:

Woi… creepy lah you. Why do I have a funny feeling that I know you? Why you wake up so early? The bed… uh… uncomfortable kah? *nottie grinZ*

You dad cannot walk cuz of gout… is that a hint? o.O ohhhh…need to make some memory exercise… recall whose dads besides Cikgu got gout!

You know so many people who has gout kah? So far I know my MIL…and a cousin who drinks like a fish – he just takes painkillers and goes on drinking! :0

      • aiyah, cannot walk when the pain strike lor. i told you we were lovers in the past =_=| LOL

Yalor…take painkillers. I usually don’t – just tahan the pain. I don’t like all those western medicine… As far as possible, I will not take. So? You’re actually a guy then? Cleff’s definitely female…or at least, in this life… ;)

      • in past life i am male. hahah.this life i am female.lol.xD btw, mystery solved. she already see my picture and said “unfortunately i don’t know you”hahaha

She saw your picture? Where? Cleff, copy and email to me… Hehehehehe!!!

      • ah nooo!you are not my past life lover, so you cannot see lah. kaakakaah

        Humph!!! :(

      • cleffairy said:

Quite a lot of people. Some of my friends, their father have gout. Used to visit those uncle in hospital after school. Both my paternal and my maternal granfathers oso have gout…and so does my friend…whose age is same as mine… she got gout too! I saw before… gout attack very painful. :( Kesian. My friend last time, when kena gout… her legs will bengkak so big and so red until she cannot move! If not mistaken that time we’re in Form 4. Went to visit her in hospital after school. We didn’t know she have gout back then… we tot she got ‘penyakit kaki gajah’. *pengsan*

Mine did not swell so bad – just very red, the swelling slightly noticeable. Maybe my case not too serious. Before I retired, I had to climb 2 or 3 storeys to my classrooms even when I had gout…and nobody bothered to shift my classes to the ground floor for me. I just kept quiet – God is all seeing and all knowing. And I refused to take painkillers… I think my pain threshold is really very high! Memang tahan one…

      • cleffairy said:

Sounds like Ah-Nel… the fattyoldman. Drink like nobody biz too!

He’s young…very young! And I think he does not eat a lot of things…so hopefully, he would not end up with all these ailments.

    • yeah, my dad one is pretty serious =( pity him lah, almost everyday on painkiller. huhuhu. i love my dad. teheee

EVERYDAY? Oh dear….how to tahan like that? Is he on allopurinal to lower the uric acid level? Of course, when there’s an attack already, it will not help anymore. This one, you take when not in pain, to regulate the level… I think there are some herbal/natural treatments too, can’t remember now – pineapples or something.

      • i think so @_@.he take medicine everyday, i dunno what medicine he took beside the painkiller. hurrmmmmm… the most important thing is have to jaga makan lor. now he don’t dare to eat fried chicken wing already. heheeh

Oh dear…not even fried chicken wings? I am thankful I can still enjoy eating…but to a certain limit. Can’t just indulge like before… Old already. :(

  5. cleffairy said:

@goldflower… are you living in Penang?

Now, who’s on your mind? Not Eugene…he and all his commas, can’t possibly be him. LOL!!!

    • cleffairy said:

Nah… i tot she’s my long lost friend in school… saw her writing style… cis… but she’s not. I don’t know her. Nvm… can still kawan. LOL… she shared her ebook source wif me too. SO HAPPY! LOL… :P

ps: You’re right about her chinese name, though… kakakakka… literal translation to gold flower is? Then you have her name oredi.

Oh? So my guess was right. Hehehehehe!!! Am I smart or what? LOL!!! :D

  6. Wow…per head RM60 at least…damn mahal o. :p

Yalor…and I always think of the leftovers. I’m sure there wouldn’t be so many people at all the places, so what do they do with the leftover food? Heat it up and serve again the next day. Throw away? Isn’t that so wasteful…considering that there are so many people starving in the world?

We don’t have such buka puasa buffets here – maybe, in a couple of the big hotels in Kuching… Would be nice to have them – but limit the choices and charge a reasonable price. If you have been fasting the whole day, I am sure you would not be able to eat much at all…

  7. When eating hurts… that sucks T.T

    Yeah…gone – one of life’s simple pleasures! :(

  8. Gout attack is on the knees? Someone told me its on the toes. I think some siblings of mine have gout too n probably under medication. I hear cherries are very good for uric acid……So I guess you have to be very careful in what you eat then….

That was the first and last time on the knees. The other times, only the toes…or did I have it around the ankles too? Can’t remember…and don’t want to remember either. Had to bear the excruciating pain for almost a week…since I did not take painkillers. Ya, I heard that cherries are good too…but no cherries here.

    • cleffairy said:

I tot whole leg? My friend kena whole leg. Her leg bangkak til the leg become 2x the original size. Very scary! :(

Thank goodness, no… So far the worse was the first time – when I could not bend my knees…and could hardly walk. Other than that, just the feet…

  9. STP, chinese used to say this…people used strength, u used life… meaning.. people tambah all the delicous food onto your plate, you ate with the risk on your life.. haahhaa…. yes, yes, thank goodness no more buka puasa food.. bean sprouts and ikan bilis looks very appetizing.. i love the way it is cooked here.. so fresh!

Of course lah! I cooked that myself…the other day. Want to show off a bit here… Hehehehehehe!!! Ya…that time, belum kena, belum tahu. Now more careful with what I eat…and so far, so good, praise the Lord! :)

  10. wow~~
Perhaps you should start fasting to ‘flush’ the acidity out of your system.

    I am…I am…*blushing! LOL!!! :D

    • cleffairy said:

Cikgu… I heard from Kat that cupping and the uh… what you call it? Guak sar? I think that’s wud they call it… very good for detox. Mebbe you can try?

I went once…and I cried till the roof almost came down, screaming, “I have no more skin left!!!!” When I left, the guy said, “I guess I will never see you again?” He was right! Muahahahahaha!!!!!

      • cleffairy said:

Ish… so scary ah? Eee… liddat I oso dun wan to try. I heard from Kat, and Claire… that guak sar good for detox. Initially I wanted to try… but now you say it’s so horrifying, I better dun. later get scarred for life!

No lah…actually, still got skin… It just felt like that. LOL!!! Instant cure – I had stuffed nose, lots of mucus – could not talk/teach for weeks…. If sick like that again, I wouldn’t mind going for it… Better than being sick, drag on and on. Lol!!!

  11. I like your taugeh.. cannot fry like that perfect.
Am careful with what I eat –..gosh…. can remember the pain.
At one time I used to drink imported lemon – sliced n squeezed in warm water and drink every morning on empty stomach…it helps.

Just add a little bit of water and don’t over-fry – that’s all. Once it’s not so brittle as when raw, that’s it – can turn off the fire already. You have gout too? Oh dear… Thankfully, mine’s not serious…like on my last trip to Kuching, despite all the prawns and the crabs and everything else, I was all right. Just have to be more careful – avoid eating a whole lot of those things not all the time.

    • cleffairy said:

The only thing that I can eat alot without getting sick is pizza. LOL… can finish up one whole box of large pan pepperoni from pizza hut in one sitting by myself and still dun get sick. true junkie I am. Hmmmm~

Ya…junk food. I don’t mind pizzas but not crazy over them. Given the choice, I think there are a whole lot if nicer things to eat…

      • cleffairy said:

*sigh* I’m a typical budak zaman moden. Give me junks… i will eat a lot and finish them very fast. Give me health food, i will run a few KM! LOL.

Actually… pizza is not that nice to eat… but… very addictive to munch on…and after eat… feel syok… just like chocolate. Comfort food. LOL!

Yalor…give me our local cuisine anytime. Even the pastas – ok lah – once in a while for a change. Cannot lawan our local noodle dishes…and so expensive some more.

  12. cleffairy said:

Fattyoldman ah? LOL… from what I gather thru his writing, the picture of his hands and leg and lifestyle… he’s about my age. Must be at most, in his late 20s. LMAO.

Yalor…imagine an old man with arms and legs and a lifestyle like that! Pengsan! LOL!!!

    • cleffairy said:

Ya… horrifying lifestyle. The pubs must be his second home… LMAO…

      No comment… That’s his life…

  13. ooo ikan bilis? I was just moaning a second ago about how I couldn’t cook my leftover taugeh coz I don’t have salted fish. shall give the ikan bilis a go

In essence, ikan bilis is salted fish too, right? Good luck… ;)

    • good point. hahaha..i decided to fry some hor fun and use up my taugeh that way instead ;)

LOL!!! That’s like char kway teow then. Nice! I do fry with ikan bilis quite often actually – don’t always have salted fish in the house. ;)

  14. owh… gout attack.. i’m not even aware what is dat until now that i read this.. oh dear.. :(

You’re young… It’s like hell on earth, so make sure you watch your diet and so on!

  15. fatty oldman said:

taugeh my favourite ler…u cant eat mean nex time i drop by sibu no fried taugeh from u… :O

I can eat… I eat anything, no problem at all. Just have to be in moderation and be careful. ;)

  16. this teaches us not to be greedy and eat everything on moderation!

    Yes, yes…guilty as charged! Muahahahaha!!!!

  17. Look on the bright side gout is a rich man’s dis-ease at the least you must be rich to get it..[oops tambah garam lagi into your knees hehe]..btw howcome yours at the knees thought it gets on people’s toes? Maybe yours is super rich dis-ease lah..[lagi tambah garam]..take care cikgu gotta stay away from shell seafood and spare parts..

Oooo…some of the stuff that I love the most. Muahahahahaha!!! Aiyor, me really kesian – not rich and yet get rich man’s disease – double whammy!!! So sad lah… Dunno – 1st time was the knees…after that, all the toes already – around 3-4 times, I can remember… So far, no more… Hopefully, that’s it lah! So painful really…

  18. Oh…that is sad. You cannot enjoy fully the food without worrying about your attacks. I hope that everything will be fine for you. I guess you have to avoid food that triggers the attack. The sad part is that those foods you will avoid is quite tasty.

Ya…that’s the tragic part. But it isn’t so bad considering that I can still eat all those things – just not too much, and then I’ll be fine… ;)

  19. oh..didn’t know taugeh can cause gout too? I thought base of feet also get hurt/pain when gout attack? Mine once is at the base, like needle poking, cannot walk properly, i thought i was over exercise at gym.

That’s not gout. People say after walking or working or exercising, you go and wash your feet in cold water straight away…or walking barefooted on cold-tiled/concrete floor… Gout will attack the toes especially the big toe and it will get all swollen.
