Sibu is well-known for its kampua noodles and kompia plus the sweet variety of the latter – the chu-nu-miang. Another Foochow delicacy that one can find in Sibu is the ma-ngee…

It has its own special batter which brings about its own unique texture. Some people, I think, use the same recipe that they use for doughnuts…and though the end product looks similar, it is, in actual fact, not the same at all.
I saw a stall something like this in KL – piping hot from the wok at a stall along Jalan Alor…somewhere across the road from KFC (Bukit Bintang) and they called them “butterfly”. I did not buy any to try as I am not really a fan of deep-fried stuff as such. My parents’ Indon maid calls it telinga kuda (horse’s ear)…

Now, don’t ask me what we call them? You wouldn’t want to know. ROTFL!!! And stop right there, Cleffairy! Chup! Chup! No wise cracks from you, no…no!!! Hahahahahaha!!!!
Well, these are from the WeCare Bakery in the vicinity of the Sibu Bus Terminal, available only in the afternoon while stocks last. They’re not cheap – RM1.00 each but they’re very big and very nice. Even someone like me who is not really fond of the authentic ma-ngee they sell elsewhere in town, fell in love with its rich fragrant taste at the very first bite!
And talking about butterflies brings to mind that one-time very popular song – I can’t remember the original singer now but there was a cover by the Malaysian band, October Cherries…and there were other songs with the same name by people like Crazy Town, Jason Mraz…and even Malaya Curry, oops…I mean Mariah Carey. LOL!!! But one of my favourite songs with the word in the title would be “Butterfly for Bucky” by Bobby Goldsboro. Just listen to the beautiful, very touching story in the song…
Save a butterfly for us, Bucky
We’re all so blind, it seems
If we could only see the magic
In the power of a little boy’s dreams…

Alamak! Butterfly! What a very refined name! LOL! so this kuih also upgraded now! No more known as the LP kuih! Do they sell in Kuching also?
Hahahaha!!! It is LP to us…and always will be! I think they do sell in Kuching. Otherwise, when we meet there for the wedding of the year, I can bring some for you, no problem at all. Bet you love these tua liap ones, right? Wink! WinK Hahahahaha!!!!
‘Meikerjakik’! lah U!!! Narng aterng! Lol! I think if ‘orang putih’ were to translate it from LP it will be ‘bags of diamond’! haha!
Dunno how that works out to be bags of diamonds? Bag of rocks, ok lah! Hahahahaha!!!
whoa nice! crunchy or not?? :p
Nope, it’s soft inside…but may be crusty on the outside especially at the edges.
aha! this is one of my favourite bun. the nicest one can only be found in sibu. there are some stalls selling it in kch and even penang but of cos they are not comparable.
i think i knwo what its called…hehehe my mom used to tell me its called “cows testicles” …hahahaaha! am i rite???
Good grief! Cow’s testicles! ROTFL!!! And I thought we were the worst! Once, there was a course here in Sibu and one of the presenters was from Kuching. I bought one whole bag full – hot from the wok. She asked what they were and I said, “Scrotums!” Hahahahaha!!! She tried and loved it so much that she ate one after another. The next morning, she had lost her voice – and I had to take over her slots! Arrrrggghhh!!!!
on the side look. it looks like sea turtle~
Turtle? How? Where? …It’s amazing how different people perceive things differently. LOL!!!
The shape is definitly interesting. I will leave my imagination for something else today! Hahaha. Haih… I better go to Sibu soon.
Hahahahaha!!! Lead you not into temptation!
So, when are you coming? I am waiting…
Very funny shape of kuih…is it really intend to be this shape?
Yes, they have been in this shape for as long as I can remember – since my childhood days.
LP kuih!!!
Hah!!! Notty! Notty!…Spank! Spank! Hahahahaha!!!
The balls have shrunk nowadays
This one still swelling huge like you said.
Omigawd!!! Thank goodness for the last word…otherwise, I would be wondering how you know mine is swelling!!! ROTFLMAO!!!
this is probably the funniest comment ever!!! lolz!
Fie!!! You must not encourage her!!! But then again, it looks like you’re also the same – half kati, eight tahils…birds of the same feather. LOL!!!
Stella, they do.. I like the one from Sekama. The fellow seems very unpredictable now. Most of the time he did not make though he used to sell mountains before.
Art: Kesiannya! Besarnya!! I like the way you arrange the LP. Very revealing!!
I remember you saying that they sold these at the WeCare Bakery in Kuching as well? Huh? How is it revealing?
LOL!!!
hey STP, over here, we call them mar kwok, horse legs cos they make like horse shoes like that… but wonder whether they taste the same or not.. their butterfly shape looks so refine.. nice!
Refined? Hahahahaha!!! No comments. Dunno whether the same or not. So far I’ve only seen the ones in KL and I did not buy to try, so I can’t say whether they’re the same or not. Sometimes, they look the same but they’re actually different – the texture, maybe even the taste.
HAHAHAHAHA. i know the name! I KNOW THE NAME!! the LP kueh! lololololzzzzz!!!
Oh gosh! Not you too, Fie! Looks like you need a good spanking too! LOL!!!
Looks like butterfly eh? How does it taste like? Don’t think I’ve seen something similar before here..
You can try the ones at that stall along Jalan Alur/Bukit Bintang. Can’t say whether the same or not as I did not try…but they look similar. Plus that stall seems to enjoy brisk business – frying non-stop…a lot of people buying!
just had that the 2nd day i arrived in kuching.. lol.. I think they charged 80cents for that here.. it was nice..
Also very BIG like these…or like the shrunken ones at other places here in Sibu. Those RM1, you get 3…put together, dunno can make one of these or not…and anyway, I don’t think they taste as good – I only like these…
Haha
We do have these in Malacca….hmm…but I don’t know what we call them o. Just makan only.
So take your pick – so far, we have cow’s testicles, scrotums (or LP in Hokkien), horse’s legs, horse’s ears…. Dunno horse’s what next! Muahahahahaha!!!
I think we call it Mah Kiok here. (Horse feet)
That’s what Claire said – but dunno the same or not. The taste of the pudding is in the eating!
Ummm…. ummm… the food looks abit obscene la, the shape… I can think quite a few names for it. LOLOLOL!!!
Chup! Chup!!! Stop right there! Now…you can keep all the names to yourself! Rancangan ini sesuai bagi semua lapisan masyarakat! LOL!!!
Looks like missionary position… mwhahahahha! *pengsan*
Hey!!! Sneaky you!!! *glares at Cleffairy! Hahahahaha!!!
THE HORROR…. the longer I look at the pics… the more obscene it looks! *faint, faint*
Enough! Enough!…Don’t look anymore. Come back tomorrow for the next post! Hahahahaha!!!!
Errr… I’m not so sure that K.L call it ‘butterfly’ but my mom told me it’s ‘horse shoes’(Mar Kiok) while I call it ‘ribbon biscuit’ since I was a kid!:)
Hey, enjoy your weekend and have more ‘foodie goodies’ to spice up your day!
Ribbon biscuit? That’s new… Ya, it seems that the standard name over there is Mar Kiok – over here, it is called Ma-ngee (in Foochow dialect). All the other names are “unofficial”. Hahahahaha!!!!
This reminds me of the ‘horse shoe’ fritters those ‘yau cha kwai’ shops sell. Do they taste alike ?
Ya ya ya ya! The shops that sell ma-ngee in Sibu also sell eyew-cha-koi…(but not this bakery) and imagine when you put one ma-ngee and one eyew-cha-koi in a suggestive position! ROTFLMAO!!! Oops…sorry, Elin! I’m so bad! Hahahahaha!!!! Dunno if those over there taste the same or not… Yet to try!
Save a butterfly for me too.. have a great weekend Cikgu
You too!!! At last!! A comment on the song!!! Everybody else all distracted by the shape and size of the ma-ngee! Hahahahaha!!!
Ma-ngee!! I remember when i am young, i use to “split” it to two first then only eat one by one.
I miss this too.
Over here, “ma kiok” – horse’s leg, the taste quite similar to ma-ngee, but ma-ngee taste more soft.
Aha!!! Here comes the expert at this! So it’s ma-ngee…and it’s softer than ma kiok! Say it is nicer lah!!! Support Sibu punya… Hahahahaha!!!!
Haha…now Cleffairy makes me wonder the other names of this delicacy…hmmm.
Nah, I won’t bug you about that. ^_^
Eyew…don’t encourage her! Bet she’s dying for somebody to say that! LOL!!!
Haha….okie dokie. I won’t encourage her. ^_^
LOL!!!
ha ha ha, miang miang again…..Lisa de inn lai liao……ha hahaha!
ROTFL!!!! You love this, don’t you, Pete?
Hmmm, never see this before…
None in Singapore?
it’s mah kiok , rounder in shape.. oval in fact.. but over the years.. shorter mah kiok cropped up, just like the one you’ve shown here
Oh? The shape has changed? I thought the ones I saw in KL were quite oval? These are big – the size of a hand…but what’s more important is the taste. I’ve bought some before that looked like it but felt and tasted like doughnuts. Ma-ngee should not be like that – somebody’s trying to full a fast one.
That is one of my favorites back in the high school days! Do miss all the food back in Sibu. I’d be an idiot to be on a diet when I’m back there for the summer holidays!
Are you back for the summer holidays now…or perhaps you’re Down Under and that would be around the end of the year? Ah…Fie’s friend! Welcome, Ryan…and do drop by often. Will link you in my blogroll!
It’s the other way round when it comes to geography =P
I’m stuck in Russia with one more final paper to handle then I will be taking a long flight back in 2 weeks time!
Oh actually we’ve met for quite some time you see. I attended your prep classes for SPM literature papers for one semester along with Samuel and Chris if you still remembered them. That was agesssssssss ago though. But the last time I went over for a CNY visit to your place you couldn’t seem to recall! XD
And thanks for the link. Will do the same here!
You did? With Samo, you mean? Hahahahaha!!! He’s very slim and fit now – into rugby, don’t play play! Chris who? Besides Samuel, there was Daniel, Andrew, Jed…now, what’s the name of the tall, thin guy now…and the other one? And you’ve been to my house? Golly gee! I wonder if Fie has been to my house too! Gosh! I’m growing old – my memory is failing me!
Well, good luck in your final paper. By the time you get back, I guess Fie would have gone off to Kuching already.
P.S. Ah! I remember the two in my Lit class now – Fong and Timothy!
i wonder why they called it butterfly…. it doesn’t look like a butterfly indeed … yeah i agree it’s more of horse’s ear…. much appropriate hehe.
Or something else? Wink! Wink! Hahahahahaha!!!!
My mom loves these…
I cant see why…
I’m not a fan of deep fried stuff neither.
haha~~
Then you’re like me. All the cucurs…and curry puffs, I prefer baked ones – not fried. Btw, how did you end up in spam? You’re not using your laptop to comment? I see all very truncated short lines…?
it’s unique and i wonder how it tastes…
Something like doughnuts, but not exactly the same…
