I dropped by this coffee shop along Lane 13, Oya Road (approximate GPS: 2.29838,111.840091) the other day. When I was teaching in the secondary school a stone’s throw away, my colleagues and I used to come here for breakfast. I remember there was a stall where there was a nice-looking lady whose Foochow fried noodles and other things were very nice and we used to opt for what she had to offer. The kampua noodles stall then was pretty good too, so we had the liberty to choose what we wanted during each visit.
The lady is no longer there, I’m afraid, but I think the people in the back section of the shop do fry things…and I saw some people eating the fried noodles from there. The kampua noodles stall is still there but it is not run by the same people anymore. In fact, they do not even look Chinese…

…and when I asked the little girl helping with the serving, she told me that they were Melanaus.
I had the kampua noodles kosong (without meat)…

…and the pork liver soup…

…for RM3.50. The soup was very nice with just the right amount of traditional Foochow red wine. It was not over-powering, the way my missus likes it. The liver was just right, not overcooked and hard. As for the noodles, they were quite good but between this one and the non-Chinese kampua noodles special that I had at Sunny Cafe at this same price, I think the latter is much nicer…especially with the prawn fritters!
The kopi-o-peng (iced black coffee) was RM1.30, more expensive than a number of other places – unless they too have jacked up the price owing to the current sugar shortage…and I thought it was just so-so, and definitely not as nice as what I had at Kopitiam Fantasy.

Well, that’s my opinion…and maybe you would beg to differ?

Good God, I’ll die because of palpitations if I were to take that thick kopi-o!
LOL!!! One man’s meat is another man’s poison! It wasn’t thick enough for me! LOL!!!
That’s very true. LOL… and God, that’s not thick enuff? It looks like it’s pretty thick to me… enuff to send me to hospital for palpitations! Heaven forbids!
LOL!!! Not for me… It lacks the rich fragrance of good coffee, or not enough…
Looks thick but not enuff, eh? I like my tea to be thick and fragrant as well. Kao wan…with only a lil bit of sugar!
kampua mee!!! lol! i tot no meat at al, lucky got meat in the soup! haha. i dnt drink coffee! xD
No meat RM1.80. With meat, RM2.20…but some places may charge 10 or 20 sen more.
I thought you really wanna have meatless kampua….then suddenly a bowl of pork. :/
It was liver! Hehehehehe!!!!
I didn’t have the coffee from Fantasy Kopitiam but Chipmunk definitely did but he ordered kopi peng kaw, not kopi-o peng. Then the drinks tauke neo came and told us that the normal kopi is already kaw so cannot kaw anymore.
They did not tell me that but when the coffee was served, I found that it was really good – much to my satisfaction.
wah the kopi o peng looks so kaw. still can take a nap at afternoon?
Can, no problem at all…if I want to. LOL!!!
Gosh kampua noodles again! I simply have to try it.. still haven’t got the chance to visit the kampua noodles stall you told me about in Puchong! LOL!
There’s one in Damansara Uptown…Sarawak dry noodles, they call it but it tasted like kampua noodles to me: http://suituapui.wordpress.com/2010/02/16/uptown-girl/
So it’s something like the ‘zheng’ in kuching then…
This is the liver soup. There are places where they have a mixture of innards – that one’s more like what they have in Kuching.
I love pork liver soup. Last time my mom used to cook with the lean meat and snow fungus. Very sedap.
My mum used to fry with ginger and Bombay onions and soy sauce – so nice, with the gravy on the rice…and then people said it was not healthy, high cholesterol…and since then, no liver in the house… Sobs!!!
I think they call it Sarawakian Mee here in KL. No? This one I tried before and I love the texture of the noodles!
I’ve heard of some reasonably good ones at a number of places but I’ve only tried a few myself. The only really good one is at Damansara Uptown – http://suituapui.wordpress.com/2010/02/16/uptown-girl/
See! Annie is from Sibu and she likes it too!!!
Kampua!! Lucky i can get my fix now at Damansara Uptown – Mang Chuan Nik Coffee shop!! LOL!!!
Monday night i was there enjoy my kampua and watching world cup. My brother was in town, he try and said it taste quite the same. Now, my boys will request to have kampua and said we go to eat “mah mah ( my mum) house brown mee? Yummy, i like”! hahahhahahhaha
But they don’t serve pig liver soup with foochow red wine, if not that will be perfect!
Hahahahaha!!! You have to thank me for that! They have pig intestine soup, quite nice – no red wine but lots of pepper – from another stall. You can try that! Nice also! Wah! Your boys memang got Sibu Foochow blood! LOL!!!
I love the kampua noodles..but i rather go with beef or some meat… not all liver.. one piece will do.. lol.. STP, u love liver, i notice.. never lack of blood then!
Hahahahaha!!! You can imagine how much blood I have! No lah…I do not take liver all the time. Mostly for the sake of putting up a post. Other times, I would rather order the pain sip (wanton) soup. I think I prefer that!
Sometimes having no meat also nice….mana tahu see below, liver..faint**hahhah… i dont take liver but soup ok for me.
LOL!!! My daughter would not touch it with a ten-foot pole! And I know many people who do not eat it either! I like liver…but must refrain from taking it often! Not healthy…
Sometimes the kopi-0 in old kopitiam is better than those in cafes. Starbucks coffee very sweet!
And so expensive! I’ve tried the coffee at all these places – Starbucks, Coffee Bean, Seattle…all nothing to shout about. Never tried Dome though…
U have kopi godzilla in Malaysia? Saw my friend ordering one in Sg.
He nearly die from lack of sleep though.
Dunno what that is. Here, I will order kopi-o-peng kau-kau-kau…but some places still not kau enough. In West Malaysia, you see the coffee really black – don’t think it’s kau! It even tastes terrible – not like coffee, dunno what taste…and so very sweet.
It means adding coffee powder to the coffee. Add until it become a small mountain on top of the coffee.
Ground coffee…or Nescafe? Eyew…ground coffee would be grainy like what we call “kopi sai” (coffee shit) and Nescafe would be so bitter. No, thanks…I don’t think I would want that. I like strong coffee…but I guess I would draw the line somewhere.
Hey… the soup looks superb. I would like to have some too!^-^ The kampua noodles look a bit dry for me… but hey, the coffee, not ‘gao’ meh?!
Have a wonderful day to you!
Well, it is called “tar mee” or dry mee. That’s why I do not like wantan mee – swimming in the oil and the black sauce…and the texture of the noodles is different. I only like the char siew and the wantan. Memang the coffee is “kao” but not “kao” enough for me. Not just the noodles – even the coffee here is different, not the same as in West Malaysian kopi tiam where it is very black, very sweet…but no coffee fragrance, very funny taste. I’d rather have Nescafe when over there! You too, have a nice day…
the ice black coffee look nice and quite cheap compare to KL. Not more rm1.30 … i think around rm1.50 onward!
the mee not taste good for me.
I know, you authentic Kuching lang would prefer Kuching kolo mee. Me too, even though I’m Sibu lang…I prefer kolo mee to kampua, and my daughter as well. Kampua comes second… Hehehehehehe!!!! Wah!!! Sugar is cheaper in KL by at least 20-30 sen a kg…and yet the coffee is more expensive. Tsk! Tsk!
Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt your conversation… just ‘overread’ it… hey, Kolo mee is tastier than Kampua kar, (slap forehead) all this while I was looking everywhere for Kampua instead of Kolo…..in west m’sia !!! I should know it earlier!:p
Over your side, they just call it Sarawak mee or Kuching mee. The one at Damansara Uptown is actually a pale imitation of kolo mee…but the only similarity is the appearance. Tastewise, I thought it tasted like kampua, not kolo mee…but on the whole, it was very nice! Worth having!
Can’t find good Kampua in KL….sigh!
You try Damansara Utama lah…or the one in Puchong, the original – the people are from Sibu, they claim that their noodles are from Sibu…and I hear they have branches elsewhere, dunno where:
http://thebankerrants.blogspot.com/2009/06/real-kampua-please-stand-up.html
Drool… if you ever go to Sarawak, try their mee kolok, which is rather similar to what you had in the picture. Lots of mince meat, and tastes real good.
I AM in Sarawak… Sibu, to be precise!
Talking about sugar shortage. Maybe they have all across the border to Indo?
I thought it’s over the other side – to Thailand…or maybe even Singapore. Never mind! Take less – good for health!
