Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

You made me stronger…

Have you ever got up in the morning feeling tired, lethargic…and even your mug of strong, black coffee could do nothing to make things any better? Boy, have I got the answer for you…

Just boil some seng-see (those more affordable, very fine ginseng “hairs”) and some wolfberries in water…

STP's herbal instant chicken noodles 1

I added two slices of dong quai as well for additional flavour since there was some in the fridge even though I heard somewhere that you should not combine the two – one is male and the other is female, or something like that.

Then, I added instant noodles – chicken flavour and cooked that the usual way, adding a free-range egg to it…

I assure you that it tastes great…and after eating that, you will feel very energetic. For one thing, because I usually sweat a lot, one bowl of it and my perspiration would start gushing out like a mountain stream which I suppose is good as sweat helps remove the toxins from our bodies.

STP's herbal instant chicken noodles 3

I cooked it before for my friend, Jimmy in Bintulu, when he stayed at my house…and he loved it so much that ever since then, according to him, he has been cooking it that way for himself for breakfast and sometimes even for lunch or dinner.

I wonder if it makes him strong like a lion? Ehem…ehem!!! Hehehehehehe!!!!

Bah, humbug! And the joke about the vampire who puked after taking dong guai will start soon enough. T_T just you wait, Cikgu… Smallkucing will laugh like mad after seeing this entry/ *SIGHHHHHH*

Hey!!! I dunno that joke! Don’t keep me in the dark now… Tell it to me!!!! I’m all ears! LOL!!! :D

    • WAKAKAKAKAKAK……it’s the latest technology to kill a Vampire…Dong Guai :P .

Can’t make head or tail out of it. Maybe I’ll google for it – sure somebody must have posted the joke somewhere. :(

      • I gave that Vampire a herbal chic. There was Dong Guai in it. She wallop and the vomitted like mad. Coz it seems that she beh tahan Dong Guai. Hence the Dong Guai to repel Vampire joke comes about lor. This lady really westernised. Cannot take Chinese herbs

I see! I can jolly well guess who that ang-moh impersonator is! Cleffairy, right? LOL!!! Must remember – when taking her out for dinner, must order all the dishes with Chinese herbs. Then I can eat everything myself. :D

    • cleffairy said:

*sigh* the joke, you’re gonna have to ask smallkucing. But most prolly she’s gonna laugh like mad again and tell you that ang moh ghost like me, kenot eat dong guai… which is true… I puked terribly after taking them. LOL…

It’s an acquired taste…and of course, it depends on the cooking too. We add all kinds of things to make it taste nice…

  2. good morning STP.

This meal is good for you but currently is no my cup of tea. maybe someday it will…

Morning. You don’t take these Chinese herbs? Good for you, good for health and well-being… I love herbal dishes. :)

  3. Lol, i thought dong quai is only for women?

Dunno…just take as I like the taste. Will it turn me into a woman? Hahahahaha!!!! :D

    • cleffairy said:

i assure you, Cikgu, it’s not just for women. My hubby took some of this chinese herbal meal the other day… and he was all… ahem… powered up. Never ever wanna feed him those stuff again!

Hahahahahaha!!!! Phew! What a relief!!! Oh dear! I’d better don’t take either! Can’t be having a toddler around at my age. People will think he’s my grandchild! Muahahahaha!!!! :D

  4. Cantonese called Ginseng beard “yan sum sou”. I sometimes boil soup with chicken and some wolfberries but I’ll make sure not putting too much of the beard or the soup will taste bitter.

Hah!!! I like the bitterness…and the wolfberries will make it sweet. Nice…

  5. stp, my mom has been cooking me the sengshee soup almost every week. argh, i cant tahan to have it again. and now u put into maggie mee! geng!

Anyway, i tot with sengshee, u should have boiled longer? else not effective as well right?

Why is your mum cooking that for you every week? To make you strong like a lion kah? Rawrrrr!!!! Hahahahaha!!!! That’s why I throw everything in and boil first…. Effective enough! Normally, I would be tired and sleepy by 9-10 p.m. but when I had that the other day, I could do my marking right up to 11 something! LOL!!!

    • oooo ! my mom will cook tonic in routine, no special occasion. hehe.. but yeah, if drink liao, i can online till 2am

So bring some and cook next time you come to Sibu to see hubby…or when he goes over to Miri, both can eat! Wink! Wink! Hahahahahaha!!!!

  6. The ‘por’ is good when the body is running low but not daily though I think or else will be too dependant on them. As for young people like teens, shldn’t take too much as they still have own abundant natural resources to draw energy from but for people like you and me ‘the ageing’ category,a boost once in a while will be great:)! Yr noodles looks yum!

I see… But Foochows/Chinese believe in taking them regularly…like when I was young, chicken essence during exam time would be a must! Ya…the noodles were nice…especially since I had not cooked them like that for a long time!

  7. wow! looks like my food is here! :p different is this one is instant noodles!! hmph i wonder if cook this way, maybe my parents would let me eat instant noodle?? lol

Ya…if you have health problems, you should take these herbal stuff more but not with instant noodles. Must steam or double-boil with chicken…and must be kampung or black chicken – more nutritious.

  8. i would love that… but i dont think my girl will taste it.. kids nowadays! a little bit of bitterness, she will not drink it… maybe i should have forced it on them in their younger years…

Ya…young people these days. My daughter does not like all the herbal stuff either. Over your side, you have stalls selling herbal soups – chicken or pork ribs with ginseng and all kinds of Chinese herbs, pig’s brain even… Oooo…I love that! Used to take that in Singapore – will not get headache, they say! :D

    • cleffairy said:

I hate herbal stuff. Herbs and spices? I will say KFC! LOL…

*shakes head… The unhealthy food of young people today – the chicken swimming in the oil! Eyew…..

  9. WAH!! This is nice, i want to try this recipe!! I got a lot “seng see” in my fridge, my mum bought for me to boil the “bak chang” soup.

I agree, we foo chow believe that, when we tired, we boil chicken soup and drink, it will bring us some energy.

Ya…do you take “char-bee-lau” – those hard dark tree roots sold at Chinese drugstores here? Thankfully, they cut into small pieces and pack in small plastic bags these days – in the past, had to chop like mad! LOL!!! I love that to cook chicken soup with meng-ngee (dried cuttle fish) and hnio-kor (dried shitake) and Foochow red wine plus ginger…but these days, I end up ceret after eating that, dunno why – maybe too heaty.

What? You use seng see to cook bak chang soup? What bak chang? The meat dumplings?

  10. I had never tasted ginseng. Does that taste good? I want to taste that.

It does not taste nice on its own – that bitter Chinese medicine taste…but with other things like the flavour of chicken, the sweetness of wolfberries…plus salt and msg, it tastes great! :)

  11. Hi. Off topic. Where is the best place in town for some steak? Thanks.

Haven’t had any for a long time…and not too impressed by those that I have had. Used to get nice steak and lamb chops at The Village but it has closed its business already. The mixed grill at the Garden Hotel is not bad…and cheaper than other hotels, so you may want to try there. They should have at all the other hotels and Peppers (TanahMas) had fresh airflown Aussie beef once, dunno now. Cafe2 may be nice – the food there has always been good…

P.S. They just open “The Western Foods” at Delta – where Sheraton originally was…and the building was burnt down. Maybe you want to try there. The name in itself is enough to put me off. Bad English…and they’re serving western cuisine. How ironic!

  12. Oh, what a good idea, I will try try!

Definitely easier that having to steam or double boil chicken soup…but of course, not as nutricious – no chicken, chicken flavour only. LOL!!!

  13. “char bee lau” – not sure is it we call “chau chee char”? something like “black stick” ? Yes yes, long time i never had that!! Very effective. You know my mum bought some for her friends over here, they just love it, and now always ask my mum to buy and brought over, i think we cannot find it here.

Ooopppssss..the “bak chang” = 8 zhan = bet ting yuk – foo chow black soup? ahahhahahahhahahha not the chinese dumpling. LOL!!

I see. You were talking about pek ting eyok – not really a fan of that…sort of sweet, orangy taste but quite nice with duck, except that my missus does not eat duck! Sigh!!! I had a post on char bee lau here:
    http://suituapui.wordpress.com/2008/06/22/stronger/
Dunno if you can see the roots in my small hp pics… Maybe I should cook it again one of these days and post better and clearer pictures. If they’re the same thing as what you’re talking about, I can add that to the list of things to bring when I go to KL! LOL!!! Or I can cook and invite you over to my house to eat when you come back to Sibu again. Great with mee sua too!

  14. This is one healthy instant noodle. hahaha……..

Mum used to cook with mee sua but I don’t really fancy them. The herbs smell are very strong and taste a tad bitter. I prefer salted vege soup. haha…very unhealthy one.

I guess you belong to the young generation that do not really care for such herbal stuff. If you go to Korea and you eat their ginseng chicken mee sua with their traditional wine, ooooo…..you will surely ask for more. So nice!

  15. This was what I have been told. They said it is unhealthy to eat too much instant noodle and the problem isn’t the flavoring stock. Instead, it is the waxy stuff they use to coat the noodle. So best to boil the noodle and then drain the water.

Yes, I’ve heard this mentioned a lot – not difficult to use two saucepans, one for the soup and one for the noodles – just drain away the water after boiling…unless you’re having those cup noodles. Of course, it’s more convenient to have the “mee goreng” variety these days.

P.S. Btw, back to your steak, you may want to try Amigo:
    http://suituapui.wordpress.com/2009/09/23/adios-amigo/
which I did not fancy a lot as I’m not a fan of black pepper sauce and I thought the price was a bit steep for a place like that – the owner was a nurse attached to the Sibu Medical Centre, maybe you know her.

  16. I like eggs that way! not too hard… soft soft.. aaaah..heavenly! I’d love this too :D hmm… now.. let me go find some instant noodles :D

Just break it into the noodles, cover and simmer for just a little while…and as soon as all the white has turned white, pour into a bowl and serve – then you’ll get the egg that way. Wait too long, the yolk will harden.

  17. ok i ask my wife cook for me… try!

Aiyor…so easy you cannot cook for yourself kah? Tsk! Tsk!

    • i know it is easy… but i told my wife about this liao hehehe

Lazy is always a reason for all. :P

If I were your wife, I would tell you: Lazy, no need to eat lor! LOL!!! :D

  18. Hi Suituapui, I’m back! Oh dear, your instant noodles look supperdelicious. Interesting remedy, I would like to give it a try since my fridge has all the ingredients you mentioned… can I cook in anchovy stock instead of adding the prepacked flavouring?

Btw, thanks for your warm regards about Juan Juan and Xuan! Juan Juan(down with common flu and fever) has fully recovered since Wed, Xuan was dianosed as acute gastroentritis hence was warded 3 days 2 night in the hospital. He has discharged on Fri, now has regained his energy and happy as usual, though still have some diarrhea(Paeds claimed that’s common).

Have a wonderful Sunday to you!

Anchovy? I wouldn’t know. As far as I know, Chinese usually cook these herbs with chicken soup…and that was why I tried adding them to instant noodles, chicken flavour and it turned out to be great. Glad to hear that the kids are ok now – do take good care. Weather’s not so good, so very hot…and all the H1N1, the dengue and everything all around.

  19. It Looks Yummy…..I shld try it out one day.

It is nice! Just don’t take instant noodles too often… Not much nutrition there.

  20. strong like a dragon makes more sense! and i dunno ginseng can cook mee too ler! plus egg lagi, can publish the book liao ^^

Trial and error! Be innovative and creative…and if nice, can share. If not, just throw away and keep quiet about it. LOL!!! :D

  21. It’s like the healthy and unhealthy all in a bowl! hahha!

The best of both worlds! Hahahahaha!!!

  22. Pengsan see the words dong guai..yea as Kat said simply can kill the evil vampire…whahahahh. She will puke like nobody business.

Why? Dong quai is so nice…especially when used to cook special dishes to serve for enjoyment, not for medicine.

  23. strong like a lion! I like that! :)
    Thanks for sharing

Oh dear! Now your partner is going to be even more tired…despite the Yomeishu! Muahahahaha!!!!
