Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

That’s my girl…

Goodness gracious! This, you really have to see to believe…

Sausages burnt to cinders

One of my daughter’s coursemates fried some sausages to eat and burnt them to cinders…and good grief! They actually ate them (and thankfully, my daughter wasn’t one of them)!!!

Well, MY daughter cooked some sausages too…with scrambled eggs…

Melissa's sausages with scrambled eggs

…and I must say that hers definitely looked a lot more appetising.

She also made this chicken rendang to go with her rice…

Melissa's chicken rendang

…and thumbs up for this one too!

Once, she cooked some kind of soup steamboat-style which was to boil some water and throw everything it. It looked pretty yummy as well, don’t you think?

Melissa's steamboat-style soup

And this was her attempt at cooking pasta – penne pasta with tomato and mushroom sauce…

Melissa's penne pasta

…and here was her cheese omelette with swiss mushrooms…

Well, whatever it was, it certainly was nothing like the sausages in the first photograph…and that’s my girl! LOL!!!

I guess there’s a lesson to be learnt here – that when you do EVERYTHING for your kids, you are NOT doing them a favour. It certainly is good to let them do things on their own and LEARN so that when the time comes and they have to leave the roost, they will be able to take good care of themselves…

God! The first picture really looks obscene! LOL… Even I did not burnt my sausages when I first cook em at 9 yo. LOL…I boiled them instead to go with my maggie back then. My mum wasn’t feeling well, and naturally, I had to feed myself when my daddy’s at work! Akakakakka!

LOL!!! You and I are on the same wavelength. When she posted the photo on Facebook, a lot of her friends commented…but nobody said anything along this same line and that was exactly what crossed my mind at that point in time. Ya…I started early too…as I was my mum’s only helper in the kitchen. Somehow she could not get my elder brother to do such things – not the domesticated type.

    • I started young too :D 9? Or maybe 10, I can’t remember. But I am glad I did because I don’t have to worry that I’ll starve wherever I go. Heh!

Colleague’s daughter SPM liao still dunno how to cook Maggi. She only know how to use the microwave. And someone I know who is 24 dunno how to fry an egg because she’s scared of hot oil…wtf! Well, at least she can cook Maggi…

There are many of those around! Really shocking!!! Overprotective parents are actually doing more harm than good!

LOL… correct la… the first pic really looks obscene… wonder why no one say nething bout that. I mistook it for some dog’s testicles when i first saw it. LMAO… I so teruk oso wun char my my sausages or hot dogs. I started early, all right. When I was 7, my mum was pregnant with my sis. It was an awful kind of pregnancy, and my mum felt sick most of the time, especially during her first trimester and her 3rd trimester. Gawd, vomit all the time, and couldn’t get much thing inside her tummy. :( She always felt too tired to do anything, and I had to hep her out in the kitchen for lunch when I came back from school. Else, will starve ler, cuz my dad comes back after 6, and sometimes, will go outstation oso.

I started to cook when I was 7. My mum taught me how to cook those simple stuff…how to cook rice, maggie, fry eggs, make simple chicken soup, French toasts… enuff to survive. :P By the time I was 9, I already knew how to cook quite a lot of things… though I wasn’t quite fond of frying eggs sunny side up. LOL…cuz can kena the oil easily. Nobody in the family felt strange, though, cuz my dad came from a baba-nyonya family. To us, teaching a child to cook early, is not exactly child abuse. It’s survival skill. LOL…the oven skill was not taught by my mum though. Ahahahaha… tak sempat learn from her, cuz by the time she finally get an oven, I already left the nest. LOL…she never acquired the need to use an oven… her cookings all use pots, pans and steamer…until get brainwashed by those Astro show, that is…sibuk wanna make mat salleh’s cookies and cakes! LOL…

No wonder you burnt your chicken! Muahahahahaha!!!! Not abuse, not survival…but love and when teaching a child to cook the long-loved dishes, one is actually preserving the family tradition and heritage. All these would die out eventually if not handed down from generation to generation…. Very sad that today’s generation not keen to learn…so eventually, all will die a natural death lah!

      • cleffairy said:

Yeah…I used to hate it when my late grandma coerce me into the kitchen and asked me to tumbuk rempah for her and make me do things! :( But now, I’m glad that she did, cuz if she didn’t, I wouldn’t know how to make good sambal belacan as well as those kuih that I loved to eat so much. It’s really too bad that I didn’t manage to learn everything from her…she brought some of those recipe to her grave. :( Not even my mum or my aunt know how to make some of those yummylicious kuih and puddings. :(

And guess who did all the tumbuk-ing in the kitchen when I was young? But my mum did not really teach me… I just helped her to do this and do that… Everything else, I just picked up along the way. Later on when I left home, I tried to cook this and that…and hey, it all came naturally. Sometimes not so successful, had to go/call home and ask… And those days, no need to bother giving some to my mum – sure not good enough one – didn’t have this, didn’t have that! Now she’s bedridden, she loves to eat things that I cook – no more complaints!

  2. Some dogs pooed on my front lawn strip the other day, the poos still there and the 1st pic of the burnt sausages look exactly like that! LOL! Your Mel very pandai in cooking now!

Ok lah…can survive pretty well, I guess. I like the scrambled eggs though – just the way I would like it…unlike those at some hotels that look like some badly-fried omelette!

    • cleffairy said:

Hotel omelette’s are disgusting! No taste, and usually not to my liking. Melissa’s cheese omelet looks heavenly! OMG! Salivating now! No cheese at home… no mushrooms oso. :( NVm… I got eggs! LOL…

That’s the way she likes it done. Fry omelette – sprinkle cheese and mushroom over it, once the cheese has melted – fold the omelette…so that outside, nicely cooked…while inside, still mushy and creamy. Yum! Yum! I used to do that for her… :D

      • cleffairy said:

Haizzz…end of the week oredi, time to do some groceries. the fridge almost empty/ LOL.. left eggs and some not so fresh veggies onlu. Haizzzzz! Your daughter’s omelette looks so damn nice. :( World class punya… and just look at the colour… the cheese and generous amount of mushrooms… omg, so sinful!

So I guess you’re gonna be frying some cheese and mushroom omelette soon… Drool!!!

  3. i dare not laugh cos i dont know whether my girl will end up “killing” those sausages or not .. but as for your girl, u deserve a big pat on your back.. :)

Form 4… Better start and let her learn. Time flies…and next year, after Form 5, she may be leaving home already. Straight As…apply for a scholarship…and bye-bye, mama!!!

    • cleffairy said:

I agree, better let her learn, if not, go out, very suffer take those outside food all the time. Not only expensive, not nice to eat oso!

Ya…especially if going overseas. If local uni or private college, no problem lah! Coffee shops, food courts, hawker centres everywhere…

      • cleffairy said:

:( My sis is in unisel…. and their food, omg, awful! Can always hear my bratty sis whine and whine over the phone to me, and I always ended up asking her to come over for the weekend so that I can cook some decent homecook food for her. Poor girl, they’re not allowed to cook as well. :( Study inside hutan summore… so far from everything….

Yes, I can’t understand why they would not allow students to cook when they are not providing meals! They should have a kitchenette… I know the students curi2 cook in the hostel using a rice cooker to cook everything! Any simple dish would be like heaven compared to what they can buy from the canteen or outside…

  4. i mz say chicken rendang looks really nice…. Like father like daughter… She is thousands times better than those girls who only know how to criticize on other’s cooking while they know NUTS….

Stay away!…Keep your distance!…Now where’s my shotgun??? Hahahahahaha!!!!….That’s what they all do – praise and sweet talk first! ROTFLMAO!!!

    • cleffairy said:

Hey, Cikgu, must tell your daughter to pretend bodoh and dono how to cook when those idiot boys go and court her… else, pandai pandai show off, end up like me… will cook to her grave after get married!

If true love, sure wouldn’t mind to cook for hubby and family mah!! If hubby also can cook, even better! Can cook together! LOL!!! And teach the anak to cook too! Muahahahahaha!!!! Worst thing is…before marriage, everything can cook…and after marriage, all the pots and pans bergantung2 on the walls – for decoration only…bukan main modern special-design kitchen some more, brand new! I’m sure you know of such couples…

      • cleffairy said:

I dun really mind cooking, actually, cuz I can’t really stomach outside food. Some really duzzin taste nice and not worth the money. :( If wanna eat such rubbish, better cook my own rubbish and eat. LOL…

Pots and pans bergantung on the wall? LOL… i kno some couples are liddat. The utensil, all damn hebat, but never use before… LOL…you go inside my kitchen though, like rumah dracula… *blush* The pots and pans all hitam liao!

You should see mine – old, no colour, dented…and the thing is I have new ones – just prefer to use the old ones! Now I understand why my grandma and aunts used the really old pots…and the food tasted so nice!!!

  5. Are you sure those are sausages in the first photo? Gosh!!! And I thought I was bad…. hehehehe….

Hahahahaha!!! You thought somebody did the Bobbit and fried them? Gee! And I thought I was the only one who’s bad…bad…bad!

  6. Those scrambled eggs looked really good! And oh the colour, it’s just perfect! I haven’t mastered the art of making good scrambled eggs. Hers certainly looked very similar to what restaurants would have offered!

Yup! I love scrambled eggs to be really creamy…and the yolk not completely done!!! Yum! Yum!

    • cleffairy said:

@Karen… must put a bit of milk… or a spoonful of water in the eggs when you whisk the eggs if you wanna have fluffy scrambled eggs. Den the pan cannot be too hot too… :P

Wah! Pandai…can cook scrambled eggs! Hahahahaha!!! Milk lh, water where got nice! And if tambah sikit cheese, lagi best! Yum! Yum! And yes, turn the fire down…or you’ll end up with omelette!

      • cleffairy said:

Ahahahah… cook eggs, pass long time liao. But I have yet to learn how to make Egg’s Benedict. Quite difficult for me. :( Do you know how to make egg’s Benedict, Cikgu?

Never tried…but you need poached eggs for that. Not really good at poaching – the white may stray all over the water and not all together like one nice purse. The Chinese call it nui pao (egg purse?)…

  7. KpgNangkaBoy said:

Hahahh…. 1st photo looks like pieces of S#*t!…. seriously.
Anak STP of course can cook well lar…… her friends must be loving her cooking.

That’s why I said – that, you have to see to believe! LOL!!! As far as I know, they have cook-outs together sometimes. The other day, she cooked the butter chicken with onions and potatoes soup…and her friends loved it!

    • HAHAHAHAHA!!! That’s what I thought too when I first saw the picture before reading :P

Looks real bad, don’t they? I think they’re freshly-made sausages…using intestines to stuff the meat. Lucky thing they did not explode during frying!

  8. OMG – saw the 1st photo-thought you are going to post on SHIT..haha.
M can cook well you are so blessed.

I’m glad. At least, I know that she can cook anything she wants when she feels like eating…and eating out overseas is so very expensive. Cheaper to buy and cook. Told her to eat at uni cafeteria or pick up something from the supermarket on the way back – frozen dinner, sandwiches, pies and stuff like that, and cook something nice on weekends when she’s free.

  9. I was going to say the first pic look like ‘kau-sai’, but since almost everyone has mentioned it…..
Melissa’s scrambled eggs look very yummy!

Ya…they do look good! Just the way I like my scrambled eggs.

  10. Hi once again, it’s been more than a year since I dropped by and I have to say that the photos do show that your daughter is going to steal some gentleman’s heart with those dishes someday. I sense that she has a supportive dad and that she appreciates food too.

Hi, how have you been? Heard you just tied the knot recently. Congratulations! Kuching guy, eh? Anak Sarawak! Good choice! :) Ah well…if there’s any truth in it, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach! LOL!!!

    • Thank you. He claims to be a true blue Kuching kia but I noticed that he noticed that Kuching has changed and he needs some direction when it comes to going to some places……..anyway, I like Sarawak especially the masakan kampung

Yes…Kuching has changed a lot. I was there in the 70s…and now I don’t really know my way around the new areas. City centre and all that, still ok! Masakan kampong? You’ll see some of that in the next two posts!!!

  11. m i tat bad??? T.T, hahaha….. i m very confident with my culinary skill…. better put down ur shotgun, she grow up dy…. maybe she will b d one pointing the gun towards u n say, “daddy y scare all my male frens away!!!”

No need to use shotgun! Hear my name, already run away! If get to see me, even worse. I’m so intimidating meh? Such a nice, cute and sweet guy, I am! LOL!!!

    • cleffairy said:

Sesame’s Street word of the day: Narcissist. Wakakakakakkaka! OMg, so perasan. I tell you la Cikgu… if you’re to appear before me when I was 5, you would scare me til I pee in my pants, cuz my dad use to tell me, big size people will eat nottie girls like me! LOL…

Hahahahaha!!! THAT, I must say, is child abuse! Emotional abuse! Aiyor…we’re such gentle giants!!! The skinny ones are the dangerous ones… LOL!!!

  12. Oh boy..the 1st pic reminded my gal having hard stool the other day..

After seeing these burnt sausages***rolled eyes, i m not sure if i still dare to eat sausage anymore….it leaves me a very deep impression of sausage’s look…but after scrolled further down, somehow it gave me back the appetite…weee***

Hahahahaha!!! Must give your girl more fruits and juices to eat. Prune juice is good for hard stools!

  13. lucky is the guy who marries yr girl. she takes after your cooking skill ya ? I’ll be very proud if my girl can cook !

Have to let them learn… Actually she prefers to cook when the parents are not around – can learn better! Usually I’ll just give some tips and hints. The mother will end up taking over…LOL!!!

  14. You brought up your daughter well! Congratulations!

Thanks. She picked up the skill by herself, didn’t really teach…but definitely glad that she can manage on her own!

  15. Wow, the chicken rendang looks good. Your daughter must have learnt cooking from you! :)

Yeah, it does look good. Tasted good too, she said. Runs in the family, I guess! :)

  16. Geez, when the first pic finish loading, i thought ‘what the…why post shit?’ mana tau, is a pic of burnt sausages. -_____-”

Bet you could not believe your eyes!!! LOL!!!

  17. She is doing pretty well with her cooking aiii…r u sure that is sausages from her mates ? could have been soemthing else eyyy…gosh…the internet here is much slower than Malaysia….

Slower? And Malaysia is supposed to be a Third World country? I hear very few places with free wifi too…unlike here, almost everywhere – even some coffee shops and cheap hotels!

    • Yes mate…starbucks pun tidak ada WIFI…apa ini ?? orang kiwi

So, Malaysia isn’t too bad after all, eh? And subscription is more expensive too!

  18. LOL..first look at the 1st pic, i thot it was something else…Your daughter really can cook. She has a good teacher mah..you,STP! :)

Didn’t really teach her…but once you know the basics, I suppose it should be ok the rest of the way.

  19. If it is smoked sausage, steaming it would be a good idea. Then only coat it with a little butter! Then it won’t get burned this way!

I don’t think it was smoked…but surely it was obvious that they were getting burnt? Maybe she was not paying attention, chatting with friends or doing something else. Young people do that A LOT! Multi-tasking, they say…and if you ask me, I’d say – my foot! If people want something done well, they will just have to focus and concentrate – one thing at a time!

    • cleffairy said:

Talk about multi-tasking. LOL…now after I pandai use my oven d…. I multitask alot… ahahahhaha…. nonid me to stay in the kitchen to observe. And that smallkucing… taught me how to malas oso… taught me how to cook all in one dishes….now I so damn pandai to malas and multi-task. LOL… Kakakakaka…baking chicken curry pie as I leave comment here! LOL…

Gosh! That smallkuching is a bad influence!!! Focus! Concentrate! It’s a labour of love like…Ummmm…I think I’ll just stop there! Rancangan ini sesuai bagi semua lapisan masyarakat! Hahahahahaha!!!!

  20. Omgh….1st glance of the 1st pic, i was wondering why STP posting poo poo online….yuck!

Tabik your daughter’s course mate. Some more dare to eat the burnt sausages.

Not just her but her friends as well! They just ate – either they were in the same boat or they were too hungry…or they did not want to waste the money spent on buying the sausages. I bet they were not cheap!

It’s good that she shared the photo…so all doting mothers and all students intending to leave home for further studies can see… It’s a real eye opener!!! I got an sms from an oversea-scholarship student now still in KL and he said he would definitely learn to cook before leaving for the UK. He’d better…and the rest too unless they are rich enough to go to places like Concord where people wait on you hand and foot…or eat outside all the time.

    • cleffairy said:

Wei, kucing….cikgu’s blog tarak X-rated cake punya. LOL…but honestly la… when I first saw the pic, i thought it was ‘cake’ too…den see second time, tot it’s dog’s testicle. *pengsan*

Penis lah! Testicles are balls, bergantung2 one! :D

  21. OH NO!!! The first picture!!!!! HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHA (i don’t want to make any comment on that. :P )

Well done Mel!!! She can cook very well. You know when i first come to KL i only learn how to cook, but only cook those really simple, not even pasta! Learn cooking serious only after i married, i learn from my mil, she is a good cook. hahahhahahhah, bad hor? I love the omellete Mel cook, look very yummy! So now you no more worry, Mel can take care herself very well.

Wow!!! And just look at your bentos now!!! Bet they’re the envy of all! It’s nothing difficult really – cooking! Go for the simple recipes… Once you know the basics, everything comes naturally…

    • cleffairy said:

Nid to worry…. sure nid to worry…. those nasty wolves are out there to ‘eat’ Melissa… Cikgu… mana ur shotgun? LOL…

Where? Where? If can get married quickly, good lah… Hubby can take over responsibility. I goyang kaki liao!!! LOL!!!

  22. We must see who is Melissa’s sifu ma… none other than A****r.. by the way how is Melissa coping in NZ? does she blog as well, if she does then i can go and see see her blog to check her updates…

you have a great weekend cikgu

No lah! She just picked up the skill by herself… She’s coping well, thanks. Yes, she has had two blogs…but I do not think they’re active. You may see her on Facebook though… Are you a Facebooker? Almost everybody’s there! Just added smallkuching…. Hehehehehe!!!!

  23. lol.. the first sausage is a winner lah!!! where got ppl can hangus kan something until like dat??? lol.. omg.. fairy.. fairy.. u want that?

Bet it goes perfectly with her s*******d negro chicken!!! Hahahahahaha!!!!

    • cleffairy said:

That’s disgusting. I wouldn’t touch it unless it’s my hubby or my dad who ended up with such result! LOL… had to ‘encourage’ these two men to cook wan. LOL…not nice oso must puji….else, I die d oso, they oso dono how to cook! :P

Ah! The secret’s out! Your hubby cannot cook also, ya? Mamma’s little boy… Now, wife has to cook liao!!! Kesian… I cooked dinner tonight – Friday, no meat day…so cooked fish lor! Will feature in an upcoming post. See! If your hubby can cook, you also so hor mia (good life) like my missus lor! Hahahahaha!!!!

  24. Ugh…the 1st pic looks like po*p on a plate! eeeuuuwwww….

I started helping doing the house chores early and when I was 9 y.o. was already doing simple cooking. Kaki patah tangan patah if malas2… but then, i’m grateful for their strict training (mom and sis-in-law). Hahaha…

Kudos to Melissa for cooking those yummy-licious food. Mintak sikit the omellete…Nyums nyums…LOL!

I’m sure you can cook…and can cook better. Tomorrow’s post will be on masak daun bandong…and the day after that, masak tempoyak. Featuring kampung delights… Easy to cook, VERY nice to eat!!! Bet you know how to cook these so very well – don’t criticise eh? Sokong sikit! Hehehehehehehe! :D

    • hahaha… yums… sounds so sedap eh…can’t wait… Aiyoyo…tempoyak, i can eat 2 plates of rice…rosak la my diet :-p
I also learn lots of new recipes from you bah. Hehe…

Keep dropping by! Hopefully you get to learn more! :)

  25. wow everything looks good here. Yummy.
By the way… Burnt Sausages is not so new too me. I always got the same thing when i cook lols what a shame….
its nice to be here in your blog
have a great day and happy blogging

Thanks…and a warm welcome to you. Your first time here, I see. Will link you in my blogroll, do come again, k? Interesting blog, you have there! Will hop over to browse when I have the time.

Well, in the past, people would say it was ok, you burnt your sausages…you’re a guy! But in this present day and age, all the same! :D Perhaps you should turn down the fire and fry slowly, turning regularly….

    • haha yeah i guess i should start doing that… but my mom never let me to do some stuffs in the kitchen anymore.. haha (i guess they were traumatized) lol have a great day and thanks for dropping…

Hahahahaha!!! Do like what my daughter did – cook when nobody’s at home! Just don;t burn down the house! Oops!…Touch wood! LOL!!! :D

  26. How can someone burn sausages that badly?
WTH? It looks more like fried turd!
    hahaha~~

Don’t ask me! I bet you didn’t do that when you were in Welly! No wonder you’re always buying sausages… Looks as if they’re the national staple over there… Everybody’s cooking sausages! :)

  27. geez.. I didnt expect frying hot dogs could turn out that bad.. honestly.. That first picture looked like dog poop :(

wow.. your daughter can cook.. so much better than the first picture.. LOL..

That’s why I said – how could that be possible? Must be multitasking – doing other things while cooking, online perhaps! SIGH!!! Young people nowadays… :(

    • And I can’t believe they ate it.. I can’t imagine putting something that looks like dog poop in my mouth and chewing it.. and then swallowing.. oh gosh.. I’m gonna puke now

I guess when you’re on your own…hungry…you’d just eat. It’s like burnt barbecued chicken wings, what? Not healthy though – all that carbon is equal to how many sticks of cigarettes!!! Btw, I notice that food tastes nicer overseas…cook the same thing at home, same ingredients – somehow, not as nice. Must be the weather!

  28. fatty oldman said:

not every parent like u teach so high skills to their kids mar…burnt food oso can eat as its not any poison…ur daughter can cook its a blesing but others cant cooks its a learning…
i burnt my food b4 but i stil ate as its my effort to learn n no one educate me like the way u educate ur dotter… ;)

That’s why…must teach lor! Then such things will not happen. But sometimes, children not interested…not bothered to learn at all. When I try new dishes, also burnt or not successful sometimes – just have to try! If not edible, throw away… Most people today just too lazy – not so domesticated, would rather go out to eat…and pay in more ways than one!

  29. LOL! Oh dear..your daughter has completely and utterly put me to shame…In my first 3 years here, I survived solely on peanut butter sandwiches and yoghurt when the hall canteen was closed. PB sandwich for lunch, yoghurt for dinner, 4 weeks at a time. I shall go hide now.

3 years? What took you so long? Ah well…looking at your blog now, you’re a real pro already, so it’s ok – no need to go and hide! LOL!!!

  30. Hahaha… 30 years ago, a rich Indonesian Chinese sent the daughter to study in UK. As she had never cooked before, she just put the rice into the rice cooker. Later…”How come it doesn’t cook?”…. LOL

I know. My daughter gave her rice cooker (the one she used in Sg Petani) to a friend…and he used, and he wondered why his rice so soggy! Didn’t realise there are markings at the side inside the pot as to how much water to add… Kids these days! LOL!!!

  31. War….What on earth are those? Shit?

Ya…ya…I know you’re a good cook! This is what happens when parents do everything for their kids, wouldn’t even allow them to help out in the kitchen!

  32. [...] soon…as I heard recently that in Wellington, NZ, one of the girls – not the one with the burnt sausages – blew up a microwave oven when she tried to cook a half-boiled egg in it!!! And according to [...]
