Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

If I could turn back time…

If I could turn back time, I would be able to go and buy something at this shop at the time when it would reopen for business…

Going back in time

LOL!!! I saw this at the entrance of a bakery in the vicinity of the Sibu Civic Centre…but I’m sure it was just the slip of the fingers, not the thought of mind.

It was Sunday yesterday and after going for the evening service at the cathedral, my family and I went for dinner with my friend, Jimmy, from Bintulu – the one that Kongkay met when he dropped by my house on Christmas night and said that he was the son I never had, owing to the uncanny resemblance and he was not the first one  to say so! LMAO!!!

We had this sizzling venison…

Ruby's sizzling venison

…which looked good and tasted good too, and my daughter’s favourite, their deep-fried bread crumb-coated fish fillet…

…as well as the mixed bean dish (with brinjal) which has been my top preference when it comes to choosing a veg dish – ever since I had that with Diana, my cousin from Miri, when she was in town sometime back…

…and also their sea cucumber soup. Jimmy had the celebrated blended kopi-o-peng

…while I had the buah kedundong juice…

I’ve eaten the fruit before – pickled or with sambal, but this is the first time I’ve tried the drink. It was not too sour – why, they even added a sour plum in it – and I liked it!

All in all, the total for that meal for four came up to slightly over RM50.00, inclusive of drinks and rice. I would think that wasn’t too bad – pretty reasonable, in fact, for a delightful meal.

  1. Ahah! No Daniel in sight yet. LOL…he’s late today. Wahahahahaha….

Hmm… the food looks nice… especially the venison. My mouth water liao. Lucky i just had breakfast! Else…

May have gone on holiday already, probably a European tour – these students. Ya…the food here is nice, not too expensive usually – there may be one or two places where the food’s cheaper…but I like the place – not too crowded and noisy and can sit as long as you like to chat! Other places, so noisy my head spinning…or they may hint in their not-too-subtle ways to you that you should vacate the table for other intending diners….

  2. is the swansea restaurant related to the bakery at the civic centre? i went there 3 times on 26, and the shutters were down (even at 5 p.m.).

No idea. Don’t tell me Swansea has finally closed down for good? Doesn’t seem very popular – usually quite deserted unlike when it first opened. I went once long ago and the food wasn’t great and extremely expensive, so I never went again.

  3. Hahahaha!!! As for the kedundong, I only like the juice don’t really like the fruit :P Had the juice for the first time 6 years ago in Ipoh, Perak and liked it ever since. They call it umbra juice in West Malaysia.

Is that so? If with sambal or ulam, I would prefer buah emplam…and I never liked the pickled ones. So yellow the colouring! The juice was nice…and I’m sure you can guess where I had it. The same ol’ place! LOL!!!

    • Eh… actually buah umbra is nice…i like to eat it with those spicy sambal for fruit rojak! OMG… craving for it now!

Ya…ladies seem to love sour things, it seems! They say more likely to have daughters if eating sour things all the time…or are they talking about the men?

      • It’s fiction lah, Cikgu. i ate so much sour stuff when I was pregnant. Everyday assam and thise sourish food. End up with a bratty boy oso. They must be talking about the men… ahahaha…

Ya, probably! Or you should eat before you get pregnant. If already pregnant, too late already mah! Boy already boy, how to become girl? Ummmm….later, maybe can. Hahahahahahaha!!!

  4. Good morning STP! Haha :D Why wanna turn back time? Just wait another few more days lar. :)

War…the sizzling venison really looked delicious. :p

Ooi! You need to polish up your reading skills…or more practice on reading notices. LOL!!! Ya, the venison was nice! But I prefer the sizzling beef at another place…

Urgh… monday…work. Think i need some super sour kedondong juice to wake me up.

LOL!!! Enjoy first, suffer later! Adrenaline crash! Well, look on the bright side – New Year’s Eve is just a couple of days away! One more round!

  6. wahh.. good food…
and lol.. 1/1/09 is like a year ago! =P

Ya…that tekkaus isn’t very observant! You’re back in the country? Belated Christmas greetings to you and your family…

  7. Mmm.. been using ’2009′ for 300+ days… I think it take times for me too to get use to use ’2010′. :P

Ya…that’s a common problem. Especially in the 1st month or two! :D

the bakolong if i eat wil cause ass pain when pangsai…duno y…

How could that be possible? You swallow the seed or what – with all the spiky-spiky things! Hahahahahaha!!!!

  9. Is there a English name for the buah kedundong?
    Sorry , i don’t understand Malay:(

Now what did they call them? Umbra?…You can always google!!! It seems that it’s called “Great Hog Plum”! Bet that does not help one bit in giving you a clearer picture…!!! Hahahahaha!!!!

  10. That mixed veggie dish is interesting. I will try it also!

It’s a dish of long beans, french beans, ladies fingers…and brinjal fried with thin slices of pork belly and a hint of belacan. Very nice! I’ve yet to try cooking it myself…

  11. Ruby.. Hmm. I’m at red carrot wid Andrew and adrienne. I wan to smuggle their jar lookin glass out. Tryin the kuaw teow tomato instead of the big sardines

So, did you manage to steal the jar-like glass? Good grief! And in the season of Christmas some more! Hahahaha!!!! You should go to Garden for their crispy seafood tomato kway teow. I’m sure you’ve seen my post on it:

  12. hahaha, yeah, i would want to turn back time liddat oso! XD XD

wahhh, yummy ler, and i know i would love the fried stuff, oooooh, so sinful! =P

Why would you want to turn back time? Me, perhaps…as I’m as old as the hills now. If only I were younger… Hehehehehehe!!!!

  13. hi stp….50rm for 3 dishes… a bit expensive? but venison is not cheap, i know… so that fruit is umbra… yes, nicer if goes with plum….
now i m in kL, tomorrow going back…

4 dishes! We also had sea cucumber soup…and two of us had fruit juices which can be quite expensive too, I think. All in all, I thought the price was ok – around RM12 per person which is definitely cheaper than eating western…or Japanese!

  14. where? I would love to try the kedondong drink… :-p

Ruby! You know the place… Wanna date me for lunch or dinner? Wink! Wink! Hahahahaha!!!!

    • can…hehe, then ask them if can buat reception there…LOL!

The place is small and not halal. Perhaps you should go to Paramount…or Li Hua. I like Li Hua actually – comparatively cheaper…and nice karaoke set/sound system! LOL!!!

      • oh ya? must start to get quotations from them… :-)

Thought it wouldn’t be till end of the year? Have to book early as lots of people getting married year end. Some may even hold their receptions at those coffee-shop type restaurants, no choice. All full.

      • mine will not be at the end of the year. middle of the year most likely :-)

Good! End of the year, I may have gone off to NZ to see my daughter, if I have the money.

  15. YUMMM !

The vege dish is one of my favourites too. A sure order when the parents give me free reign on the ordering on the rare occasions we eat out :)

A belated Happy Christmas to you and family :)

Thank you…and the same to you. This is the 3rd time I’m having the veg dish… Didn’t know about it before and I think it’s really nice.

  16. what is buah kedundong? The food looks good! RM50 is not that expensive.

Ya…it’s value for money. Well, it’s a fruit with very green skin, a bit on the sour side – even the Chinese call them by that name…more or less – bua kondong or something to that effect.

  17. Damn the venison looks good. I haven’t had that in a very long time. I’ve gotta go when I go back to Sibu during CNY. You remember this place at Civic Center that used to sell turtle meat? It’s closed down now though.

Ya, it was good! Come CNY, I will be in KL to send my daughter off and will only be back in Sibu night of the 1st Day – all flights full. Hope you’ll still be around. I’m not into turtle meat. You mean the Dragon King or whatever, now turned into a car wash place? I hear you can get the meat at the restaurant at this new temple complex at 16th Mile – huge one, biggest in South East Asia…

  18. Woo…sizzling venison looks delicious. Mixed beans is something new for me too…something new that i will try on my next trip back.

So when are you coming back? Chinese New Year?

  19. AH! Now i know “mankolong” is called “buah kedundong” in malay. Here they call it “umbra” or cantonese is call “sar lei”, i don’t take sour stuff but i like this juice, very refreshing.

That sizzling venison look very tender, so yummy.

LOL!!! No wonder you have sons – twins!!! :D Planning to come back for Chinese New Year. If you’re lucky, you can buy the meat at Sungai Merah – and wild boar too!

i whre got gals everywhre if hv i stil lonely mer…i poor guy no internet o computer n nid go cyber if wana update…

Wait lah! Wait till you go back to KL or Kuching. Singapore too expensive, cannot afford to visit! LOL!!! Aiyor…you so poor meh? Drinking like fish all the time…

  21. See you in 2009!
Oh wait… what year is it that’s coming next?

    haha~~
    Thanks for sharing!

I definitely would not want to go back in time…Can’t wait for 2013 when my girl will be out in a school teaching and I can REALLY retire and shake legs!

  22. This ambra juice is making waves all over recently. When I was in Penang oso they were promoting this and these days in KL oso everywhere this is the hype :D

Why? Did they give any reason? Any health benefit or something?

  23. That was funny. I guess they like 2009 very much. Must be a good year for them as bread price escalated so much. Must got good profit. Hehe. :P

Bet 2010 is going to be better for them. Don’t think the price is ever coming down. Luckily I’m not very much into bread… I’m more a noodles and rice guy! LOL!!!

  24. i want that sizzling dish, now I feel like making one! hehe

You cook?…I only eat sizzling dishes at restaurants. Wouldn’t want all that sizzling at home. Can be quite messy. :D

  25. [...] think the bean combination dish at Ruby in Sibu is a lot nicer – all the beans fried with pork belly and a hint of belacan (dried prawn [...]
