My parents’ Indon maid loves to watch me cook. She once remarked that Chinese cooking was “sangat mudah” (very easy) and I couldn’t agree more – minus all the peeling, the pounding and the multitude of ingredients to be added.
Well, I had some venison in the freezer, so I decided to cook it…but you can do the same with other types of meat, be it beef, lamb, chicken…or even pork. Actually, all that was needed were a few slices of ginger…

…and some soy sauce and sugar but I had some chillies and Chinese celery.
Prior to cooking, I mixed the meat that I had cut into thin slices with some pounded papaya leaves to tenderise it (in case it was a bit too tough) and left it to stand for about half an hour.

Then I rinsed the meat to get rid of the leaves.
After that, I marinated the meat with soy sauce and sugar (I used gula apong/attap – palm/nipah sugar) plus a bit of Foochow red wine, pepper and finely-chopped Chinese celery…and left it to stand for another half an hour or so.

To cook the meat, I heated a bit of oil in the wok and threw in the ginger, followed by the chillies…and the meat. After stir frying it for a while, all the juices would come out of the meat…and I let it simmer until it became quite dry and the gravy had turned thick. Then I served it on a plate…

…and garnished it with a few sprigs of Chinese celery…

The meat was nice and tender and tasted good. Yum! Yum!

It does look easy though. Foochow Red wine adds the smell :p Normal wine can use ka? I mean I dun have foochow one, but I have ang moh one lah ..
Dunno about ang moh wine…but they seem to pour it into everything in those cooking shows. I think I’ve used to cook some things and it did not turn out so nice. But I’ve used brandy before…and that one’s ok!

One of your signature dishes, STP? It is 9.52am now and i m waiting for my fren to come for breakfast plus going to the market as well. I also dont hv foo chow wine but chinese wine will do, let me try that out one day for my kids…
Not really…just another of my simple easy-to-cook dishes. Chinese one for this dish may be ok…but I’ve used Chinese red wine with our Foochow red wine chicken soup plus mee sua – not nice! Better cook without wine…and then when eating, add a spoonful or two of brandy! Nicer! Maybe I’ll post on this dish one of these days… Also easy to cook!

wow !! Yum yum yum! Just like the one serve in restaurant!
I notice, foo-chow cooking is more easy than cantonese. Cantonese one always braise, fry or add in a lot things.
Dunno whether this is Foochow or what, just the way I cook it. I know in the restaurants, they deep-fry the meat in oil first to seal in the juices and flavour, drain and then cook it again. I’m not so keen on the deep-frying part – so oily! And sometimes, they coat the meat with cornflour… Nice when hot from the wok…but not when it has turned soggy after some time.

Yummy! Now I learnt how to cook venison
You mean you don’t know how to cook? Personally I would prefer other types of meat but don’t mind having it once in a while for a change! In the restaurants, they add all kinds of things besides ginger – Bombay onions, some even add serai… I think their way of cooking may taste nice but it drowns out and destroys the flavour of the meat. I hate seeing them do that to Poomba… So sinful! Hahahahahaha!!!!

Yummy-licious!!! *drool*
I like to eat venison but we can’t eat it at home because my Mum can’t stand the smell of the meat in the house. She’ll get ‘mabuk’ if we bring the meat into the house. Even the pots and pans we used to cook the meat have to be thrown away…
So, been ages since I last had any venison dish although I did enjoy satay rusa in Kajang earlier this year but now they don’t serve satay rusa anymore… *sob*sob*
The meat’s available in all restaurants in town – even Ruby. Your mum’s pantang too? My youngest maternal aunt too – and her daughters. Once they eat, the next morning, all cannot open the eyes – all eyelids stuck closed by tahi mata! That was what I heard! LOL!!!

Really?
Mum will get into a vomiting spell and she’ll be so weak from all the vomiting, nausea and stuff… She’ll be bedridden for a day…
Ruby got venison? So, next time we meet up there… You’re the food guide
They have venison everywhere – other such restaurants, also those food stalls at places like Taman Selera Muhibbah. Very easy to find here…

We Chinese have been cooking for centuries! In all this time, we’ve learned that less is more! The proof is our food tastes better than many other cultures! YEAH!!!
To each his own! But as far as I am concerned, whatever requires less work to prepare, that’s my kind of dish!!! I’m basically lazy… LOL!!!

Next time try with dried chili. Extra flavor.
Didn’t see any in the house. Old lady’s very good at hoarding things…and in the end, she can’t find them herself. Would go out and buy some more and then the things would reappear like magic! LOL!!!

Welcome, welcome… I’ve seen your comments in a few people’s blogs. Will add you to my blogroll, so do come again. I post a lot on food (as they seem to be more popular) but I do post on other things of interest – to me, at least!
