Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

Last night…

It was not on our last night in Penang, but after the delightful salted fish fried rice I had at a stall at Red Garden, the hawker centre somewhere across the road from Cititel Penang, we went back there again some nights later and my daughter had the pineapple fried rice…

…while I had one of the other fried rice dishes…

Somehow, I just can’t remember exactly what I had, so you can imagine how unimpressive it must have been. Well, both were a disappointment and a far cry from the salted fish fried rice that I had which was simply awesome.

My daughter also had rice for lunch that day when I went out for lunch with Mac and Joe. She did not want to join us, so I tapaoed for her some roast duck rice (RM6.00) from the May Garden Restaurant located right next to the hotel and some roast suckling piglet (RM20 for mostly the crackle/skin)…

…but she said it wasn’t that nice even though that restaurant seemed somewhat popular and was well-known for its roast stuff. I tried a bit of it and I must say that I couldn’t agree more. We have much nicer ones in Sibu, she said…and she was right, and what we have here is a lot cheaper too!

Anyway, all too soon, our stay in Penang was about to come to an end. On our last night on the island, we went back to Red Garden as my daughter wanted to have the Japanese bento (RM15.00) that she had that first night in Penang…

I had this Thai rice dish…

…which wasn’t anything to shout about, but I really liked their mango pulut (glutinous rice) dessert…

I think that was RM6 or RM7 for that big plate and it was really nice even though I would very much prefer durian. The last time I had that was years ago at some food court in Singapore. I had both durian and mango and it was S$10.00 each for just a small plate. Try converting that! *Pengsan!

Incidentally, there is a satay and chicken wing stall at one far end of the Red Garden Hawker Centre…and as they didn’t look too bad, I thought I would just order a few sticks to give it a try…

Red Garden satay

Unfortunately, they were far from what I would expect. Even the seasoning of the sticks of satay did not taste like what it should be and the satay sauce was equally disappointing. Besides, they were not cheap at all – 80 sen per stick. I can get satay at the Taman Muhibbah Hawker Centre near my house here in Sibu for half the price and they taste real good…like satay!

Now, while we were halfway through dinner, I received an sms from some ex-students, so I just told them to come to the hotel later and we could just sit and chat…and that was what they did. This is Lay Po who stays in touch with me via Facebook…

With Lay Po

…and this is Hui Lik…

…both from my Form 5 class in 1995. Now, both are happily married, settled and working in Penang and each of them is blessed with a daughter. Good grief! Don’t tell me they are following their ex-teacher’s footsteps! LOL!!! We sat and talked till almost midnight…

…and the next morning, my Penang friend, Eng, dropped me off at the airport for my flight to KL and was so kind as to help me send my daughter back to Sungai Petani after that.

As you can see from my posts, other than the eating and a little bit of shopping/window-shopping, we did not do very much else during all that time we were in Penang. My daughter had lots of assignments, so most of the time, we were cooped up in the hotel room with her doing her work and me, lazing around and idling the time away and dozing off…

But she did say that she had a good break and was happy that I came over to keep her company. I certainly am glad I went over too and one consoling thought is that I’ll be seeing her again pretty soon as she’ll be coming home for Hari Raya in a couple of weeks’ time…

Where’s the best in KL?…My last trip in May, I went to Bangkok Jam and I wanted that but it was “out of stock”… I prefer durian though. Watch out for my post on the durian desserts….

  5. Was here and angry………

    good weekend to you, bro

Why? Don’t be angry… Later grow old so fast, won’t look like 28 anymore! LMAO!!! Missus out of town so mood not so good, izzit? Once in a blue moon only mah, not all the time!

  6. I think the food in Red Garden is mainly for tourists, those who come visiting and staying around that vicinity… so that might be the reason why the food there is not as nice as what the locals eat… nothing to shout about, as u said… too bad u didnt come to ipoh and try the famous steamed chicken and bean sprouts, claypot rice, crabs, steamed river fish.. etc etc..
next time perhaps.. after all , air asia very cheap nia… but dont wait till my sons’ wedding … :) )

What’s good at Red Garden? The or chian (oyster omelette) is my favourite in Penang, the ikan bakar too – so far I had bawal hitam and stingray (parek), the salted fish fried rice’s best lah and the yong tau foo (but can be expensive), the dim sum also not bad….the Thai mango pulut, the Ipoh curry chicken in the bun was so-so…the char hor fun at New World was nicer…and still so many things I did not get the chance to try! I like the music they play – songs from my time like “Wonderful tonight”, “Smoke on the water”….to songs from your time – “Oh Carol” “Itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini” (or is it Eugene’s time? LMAO!!!)… Hahahahahaha!!!! Really worth going, just need to know which are the good ones!

Why don’t you come to Sibu? Lots of things here too! You’ll love it here – bring your children!

    • wow..i m waiting for u to say that…hahaha..the last para.. sure, would love to go, i will let u know… see got cheap flights and right company, then off we fly… wanna have seafood and try the ones u put up in yr blog.. before going, must gather more info first…. about food, i mean.. lol..

No need! Just come and I’ll be happy to take you all around…and belanja u all makan all the BEST stuff in town!!! You won’t regret coming this way, I guarantee…

  7. Wow! Love salted fish fried rice. Hope you bought some of the famous Penang ‘Kiam Hoo”! So contemplating a move to Penang anytime soon since you hve so many bloggers buddies over there?

No lah! East, west…home is best! I think if fry with our local “long kiam hoo” – lots of it…it would be a lot nicer! I think I bought kiam hoo from Pangkor last time – not really worth the trouble.

  8. War…you makan all day and night huh Suituapui? Haha :D Pineapple fried rice? Again…never heard of it. I believe so of the exquisite cuisines can only be found in Penang huh!

Of course lah! Everybody makan day and night – breakfast, lunch, dinner…and sometimes supper. Pineapple fried rice is originally a Thai dish…like pandan chicken…or mango pulut and tom yam. I’m sure you have in Malacca lah… Sibu also got – except mango pulut…

  9. The mango pulut thing looks really yummy!

It was really, really nice… Yum! Yum! LOL!!! But wait till you see my post on durian desserts! They’re really to die for…

  10. omg the bento looks so nice!!!! :D :D

My daughter loved it! Had it twice but too much for her to finish…and I’m not into Japanese food, so I couldn’t help her to finish!

  11. Sir, thanks for the post and pictures, that was a wonderful night and chat after 14 years! God bless us to not follow our ex-teacher’s footsteps, we are in the progress of making more… haha.
Gosh… u eat more variety of good foods in a week than I have in last 10 yrs in Penang…

LOL!!! I certainly hope you two will have more, lots more – don’t follow my bad example! Hahahahahaha! Yes, it was nice to meet again after all this time and thanks for dropping by. Many would not even bother… Ya, since you live in Penang now, you have all the time in the world to eat all those yummy stuff, I only had a week or so… Hahahahaha!!!!

  12. you did good.

    1st, for spending time with your daughter;

these speak volumes of you, sir!

Yes, I’ve lived a life that’s full….(My way – Paul Anka/Frank Sinatra) and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
