Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

You’re still the one…

Louis J asked me to give him a lift to the airport yesterday morning and suggested stopping for breakfast along the way. Well, we ended up at the Rasa Sayang Cafe and had this bowl of pian sip

Rasa Sayang pian sip soup

…at only RM2.20 with its generous sprinkling of spring onions and eyew chang (fried onions) in very nice clear soup.

Incidentally, what on  earth does pian sip mean, if anybody would care to enlighten me? And why is it called kiaw in Kuching or wantan elsewhere? Is it just a name given to it – the same way we call a chair a chair, for instance? I wonder…

Anyway, we also had the kampua noodles, of course…

…also at RM2.20 a bowl. Louis J was the one who told me about Rasa Sayang initially when they were still at their old location but he had not had it since they moved to their new premises sometime towards the end of last year, and his verdict…

It was as nice as he remembered it to be – they had been able to retain its yummy taste and quality after all this time.

I guess everybody already knows that this is my favourite place for kampua noodles but some have not bothered to drop by and give it a try e.g. intechfly, formerly known as housefly. He had to come home for a couple of weeks ago because of the H1N1 scare in the university…and at long last, he happened to drop by the place with his friends. I got an sms from him soon after and he said I was right – it definitely was the best he had ever tasted.

Well, as I always say, I am…ALWAYS right! LOL!!!

  1. lol…
my daddy tested da kiaw here during his last visit. he witnessed da whole cooking process and that made him lost appetite! =.= i donno what happened as i wasnt with him that time. and mami & daddy ended up having kfc for meals during their 4 days here =.=

and i have yet to try pian sip…maybe one fine day…

Pian sip is mostly skin…on which they apply a bit of minced meat (mostly fat) like applying butter on bread. Some places more generous than others and must know where to go – not all places are the same. Like if it’s pian sip dry, I think Rasa Sayang’s no good – would rather go to Soon Hock here. The cooking is simple – just boil the pian sip and put in bone soup to which chio cheng (light soy sauce) and msg have been added. Comparatively, I think KFC is a lot unhealthier….more protein, of course, but also more fat…and more expensive!

  2. omgggggggggggggg.so nice.i miss rasa sayang’s kampuaaaaaaa! *tummy grumbling*

ROTFLMAO!!! Mission accomplished! I’m such a sadist! Hahahahahaha!

  3. I tried that and I can say YOU ARE RIGHT. The kampua is indeed very nice and cheap! The beef noodle is nice also. Will have a post on it if I can. Hehe. The haze is getting worse today. Sigh…

See! More and more people are agreeing with me! Yes, the beef noodles are nice too…but a bit expensive and not very much. It was quite clear by evening yesterday…but got bad again this morning. We just have to pray for rain, heavy rain!

  4. KAMPUAA!!!!

Hahahahaha!!! Another one! This is fun! LMAO!!!!

  5. Pierre Dudley said:

Yummy.. the kampua looks nice.. too bad i can’t taste it right now..*drool~!* nvm, let’s do the rain dance~! LOL

Well…they’ve lots of kampua in KL now, just more expensive and maybe not as nice!… Ya, I’ve been doing the rain dance since last night. Hope it will rain soon.

    • Pierre Dudley said:

Nah.. tried some around here.. but none have the “authentic taste” to it, that includes kolo mee as well.. just expensive & fake, must have been lacking of home-made old secret recipe, or is it the difference of noodles… Anyhow rain dance is tiring, maybe listening to rain dance song might be a better option: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8zOWGX4-wv8

If they do not know how to make their own or get from Sibu like the one in Puchong, it will never be the same…and of course, there is still some difference. We have good stalls, not so good and lousy ones even in Sibu…

      • Pierre Dudley said:

oh my.. where in Puchong? ..must have slipped under my radar…

Somewhere in Selangor… Hahahahaha!!! Google for it…

  6. Ooh kampua again! haha. I wonder about the average frequency of kampua/kolo mee consumption per week.

Per week? Think about per hour! I was at one outlet before 8.00 a.m. one day (They open at around 7)…and the lady had to take out another giant plastic bag of noodles already – must be at least 10-20 kg in it! And that is less than RM2.00 per kg…and they are selling at RM1.50 without meat and RM2.20 with meat! Imagine how much they can make in a day…in a month…in a year! Yet they complain that it is hard to make money in Sibu and move to…Kuching or KK or even KL now!!!

    • True, but one must also factor in labour cost! Noodles doesn’t become kampua all by itself – automation will also cost some!

They’re rich, millionaires in their own right but I know that some gamble it all away. It’s not too hard to make A plate of kampua but I guess standing there the whole day, making plate after plate, plus the free sauna from the ever-boiling water can be quite tedious and not all all inspiring especially when you do it every day your whole life through. Some have switched to automation though – they are called Indon maids, Mandarin and Foochow-speaking ones. The boss just collects and counts the money…and nags and nags and nags… LOL!!!

  7. ohhh.. now i feel hungry again looking at the food… lol..

    p/s: im from ipoh! =)

Ok…I was planning to drop by Ipoh end of this month but right now, it doesn’t look like I’ll be going – just Penang and KL. LOL!! Come to Sibu and you can enjoy all the nice food here!

  8. Always makan huh! So your favourite kampua noodle is at Rasa Sayang lar? I am so hungry right now. So good of you to fetch your friend to the airport huh! :P

By the way…what’s the meaning of Kampua?

Well, what are friends for?…If it’s not during the time when I have to babysit my mum or when I’ve lessons on, then no problem at all! Sibu airport is very far – taxi fare has gone up to RM35 – one way, I think!

  9. What’s your opinion about the kampua noodles at Kedai Kopi Sibu across SHS and beside 2 cyber cafes?

The Sibu Cafe! I had a post on that here:
    http://suituapui.wordpress.com/2008/11/12/everybody-knows/
Not bad…but not as nice as my favourite two places.

  10. oh..what is pian sip? cannot see what it is… like wanton?
but the kampua noodles… i wanna try la… is it called kolok mee in kuching and miri? is it the same or different?

It is wanton…just a different name and the skin may be a bit different, not so yellowish and firm like wanton – maybe less egg used, I dunno. No, it is not like kolo mee…but this one at Rasa Sayang is something like a fusion between the authentic kampua and kolo mee. It has a taste of its own and is VERY nice….

  11. kampua again! My interpretation of ‘pian nik’ as in foochow means flattened meat, and I think they do just that before rolling them up to boil. Right or not? Re: yr previous blog where u had a ‘leftie’person pic in one of the books that you wrote. Do you know aussie slang for a leftie also known as ‘mollydooker’,thot that is quite an interesting fact to share! Paul Mccartney is also a leftie,to name a famous one…….

It’s “sip”…or in Foochow “sik”…and not “nik” – the flattened part is right though… Ya, I have some outstanding students who are lefties.

  12. hmmm, since the rasa sayang kampua is so highly recommended i shall give it a try once i reach sibu. Btw u will definitely enjoy ur penang trip. The food are awesome n tonnes of food available along gurney drive. A budget of RM15 per meal enables u to enjoy so many local delicacies…. nutmeg juice is a must try there…….

Buah Pala?…No thanks!…RM15 is a lot, enough for kampua for 4 persons at Rasa Sayang plus drinks…and one bowl of pian sip sip to share. I don’t like Gurney Drive – overrated, place not presentable, people are not friendly – quite rude, in fact…and SO crowded. Lots of other nicer, more pleasant places in Penang….

  13. Now I know what I miss – the Rasa Sayang Kampua, and also Rachel who just loved to go there!

…And I miss Rachel too. This year, nobody in the class to banter with, and it gets so boring… All so quiet, hardly a word…

  14. do come to uncle dom :D
    it’s opposite sushie tie.
im sure u gonna love the food there LOL
come in the morning or for lunch :)

No wonder! You’re working there part-time! I looked at the reviews in some blogs – one not so good and generally, it looks like it’s very expensive. Tom yam mihun – one said not nice and RM7.90 – I like the one at Mei Le Cafe (next to Sweet Smelling Bakery in Pedada), RM4.00 only and VERY nice! Set lunch – RM9.80….Aiyor!!! I go, you belanja, can or not? Hahahahahaha!!!

  15. i want to be like you, i want to be like you, i want to blog about food like you do, but then again, i am a newbie in that area, coming here is i guess suffice for me…

hey, nice to have you as friend in the bloggersphere ..take care my friend

That’s from “Jungle Book”! LOL!!! Nothing hard…just go and eat and give your frank and honest opinion. After all, they do not pay you, so you can just tell the truth if it’s not good.

  16. The kampua looks good. We don’t really have good kampua in Kuching. Heard there’s good kampua in BDC but haven’t tried yet. I usually go to the one at Thompson corner. Am sure that when you come to Kuching, kampua is the last thing on your mind.

Definitely not! Comparatively, I personally think kolo mee is nicer…but Rasa Sayang’s kampua is worth trying. Not authentic kampua, so some die-hard kampua lover may not like it. Lindy and Gundot liked it…

    • Alvin said Rasa Sayang kampua is not kampua. He said it’s a fusion of kampua and kolo mee. So, when he brought me to eat kolo mee which to me, taste suspiciously like kampua, I’d tell him it’s kampua. Hahaha! Oh yes, we can go on and on about this during the whole meal much to the amusement of patrons at the next table. Hahahahhahahaha!!!

PS: Betul, STP is ALWAYS right! :D

I agree that it’s not authentic kampua nor is it authentic kolo mee – it’s just what it is and I like it a lot. Some die-hard Sibu kampua fans do not like it as they say it isn’t kampua. There are places here that claim to sell kolo mee…but I have yet to find one that actually tastes like kolo mee. Everytime, it’s just kampua with minced meat and char siew plus a prawn or fish ball and a bit of veg! Dunno want to fool who!!! Tsk!!! Tsk!!!

  17. oooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that rasa sayang kampua still as good as b4, the taste remains the same. i will try 2 go there more often. i enjoy it very much that day….i was so kenyang i slept soundly on the plane to Miri hahaha…i think i snore hahaha pity d other passengers…thanks 4 d lift STP…we shall go there again and our quest is to look for new eateries around sibu!

Bluff! Bet you sleep and snore (LOUDLY) on every flight you take! Don;t blame it on the kampua! Hahahaha!!! Ya, it is as nice as it was before…and the place is as crowded as ever!

  18. [...] our blessings!!! The kampua noodles at my favourite shops – Rasa Sayang Cafe and Soon Hock..are still RM2.20 a bowl or RM1.80 without meat for those who do not fancy paying the [...]
