Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

Living in harmony…

When my daughter was still here last week, she wanted to have some ikan bakar (grilled fish). I remember there is a stall outside Fat Mom’s, along Lanang Road…but when we got there, we discovered that the stall was not open. So we went to Taman Harmoni instead…

Sibu's Taman Harmoni

This is the open air food court located around Jalan Awang Ramli Amit (formerly Race Course Road) and Archer Road, something like that Taman Muhibbah near my house in the Delta Comemrcial Estate, Jalan Pedada…but they only sell only halal food at this one.

We had the grilled sambal sotong (cuttlefish) which was very very nice…

Grilled sambal sotong

…and the ikan bakar

Ikan bakar

We had the black pomfret (bawal hitam) and it would have tasted great, had the fish been fresh but unfortunately, I think it was one of those frozen ones that tasted bland and was somewhat disappointing. I was told that the very popular satay stall – formerly at the original Sibu Recreation Club in the town, moved here as well but I did not know the stall number, so I just ordered some at random…

Beef satay

They were not great either, and some of the sticks were a little bit too overdone. I would prefer the ones at the Malay stall at Taman Muhibbah near my house. Nobody wanted rice, so I ordered a plate of mee kahwin for us to share…

Mee kahwin

Normally, they would have mee/noodles, kway teow and mihun, all mixed together…but this one did not have the mihun. Fried with shrimps and sotong, all of us agreed that it was very nice and something worth having.

I don’t know how much all that was, as an ex-student happened to be having his dinner there too with his family and he took care of the bill. Responding to that, my daughter remarked, “Gee! It’s so nice to a teacher!” Ummm…I shall reserve my comment on that! LOL!!!

  1. hey, everything u took that night didnt turn out particularly nice hor? too bad… but the best thing was it was all paid for? that covers the disappointment… hahahaha… i agreed with yr girl, great to be a teacher… u r respected…..

Yup…only the sotong was very nice and the mee kahwin. The satay was so-so…but I wouldn’t go for the fish a second time, that’s for sure. It all depends – not all teachers are respected, and not all students respect their teachers…

  2. they looks okay to me. Bawal, sudah lama tak makan .. here mahal. ha ha ha

Had very nice ones in Penang – grilled…and not expensive. Dunno KL…

  3. Ooohh…lapar! Had to fetch chipmunk to work this morning (his car is at the workshop because he got into an accident last week) so did not have breakfast. Speaking of ikan bakar, long time no eat 3rd mile ikan bakar (the kopitiam below Watana snooker center) liao *drool drool*

Oh gosh! I hope he’s all right…and you too! Damage not too bad, I hope. So far I’ve only eated ikan bakar in Penang…and Sibu, of course. Much nicer there…Chinese hawkers, fish very fresh…and they do not drown them with the sambal.

    • Love the ‘sup power’ there! Yum! Yum! :P

You take that? I thought it’s for the men? Does it make you strong like a lion(ess)? Grrrr…. LOL!!!

    • He’s fine. I was not in the car so I am okay too. Hahaha! A van came out from a junction suddenly without looking and he rammed into it. So claim the van’s insurance. The driver of the van got fined RM300 on top of that for not giving way.

I’ve eaten the ikan bakar in Bayan Lepas, Penang too (also sotong bakar). Very nice, I like! So nice that we ordered another one before finishing the one we ordered. Hahaha!!! For fish, I prefer stingray :D

Ok…so long as everybody’s all right and somebody else is paying… Penang’s stingray is nice…not Sibu’s. Got urine smell – they say on AFC that either it’s male or they add chemical to keep it “fresh” – then got smell.

  4. i was so used to cheap seafood in sabah..haih!
where to get 1kilo of crab for only 6buck here u say la T-T

You mean the sea crabs? Nobody sells that here…because nobody wants to buy them. Not so nice! We prefer the mud crabs, I think RM20-30 a kg. We have cheap ones – less than RM10, they say from Limbang/Lawas (reared, they said) but not very big and the flesh not firm…Not as nice as the expensive ones from Sarikei and the areas around there.

    • Yeah, man! Mud crab any time! :D The other day chipmunk’s mom’s superior bought some crabs from Sematan (if I’m not mistaken). Don’t know what species of crab but they’re dark orange with white polka dots. A lot of meat, quite nice!

The orange/pinkish dotted ones must be the sea crabs. Not as nice as mud crabs – the flesh not so firm and the taste is not as strong! Use to get those in hotel buffet dinners in KL – not worth dirtying the fingers! LOL!!!

  5. War…your daughter likes to eat out a lot huh! Especially seafood. hehe :D Personally I always prefer the sotong. By the way we had seafood with my dad last week for Farther’s day. :D

Not exactly. We eat at home a lot too. Everytime she comes home, we’ll see what she wants to eat – some homecooked, and others we go to eat outside. She prefers sotong too and they’re cheaper here, and definitely cheaper than prawns or fish. Ummm…going to post on your seafood dinner?

I think i know that place…. near the masjid rite? Never knew that carbo dish was known as mee kahwin…. i only know roti kahwin. hehe.

Yup, that’s the place. Been there before?…Yalor, roti kahwin, mee kahwin…now siapa belum kahwin? Hahahahahahaha!!!! Btw, the mee kahwin is nice! Must go and try when you come over. Last time, I had some at the hospital canteen because everyone said so very nice…but this one is a lot nicer!

Haven’t really been there.. but the food sure looks fantastic ! I heard the ‘sup power’ is also nice?

The sambal sotong bakar is worth having and the mee kahwin, the satay…you should try another stall, not this one that I ordered from (Chinese lady, convert). You can try the sup power – bull’s testicles cooked in ginseng and all those herbs – makes you as strong as a bull! Hahahahahaha!

Taman Harmoni lah.. Taman Muhibah lah.. very the lovey dovey you people in Sibu ho.. hahahahahaha

Hmmm.. its been a while since I had sotong bakar…

Three months already? Coming to Sibu by any chance…to settle legal matters. Can go there to try! Ya…Sibu – perfect example of 1Malaysia! Hahahahahaha!!!!

  9. eee.. it’s really nice to be a teacher! Lucky you’re a good and respected teacher because if not, I’m sure instead of paying the bill for you, they would have poisoned you! Lol..

That’s why must be nice to them… But if you ask them, that’s probably the last word they’ll use to describe me! Hehehehehe!!!!

  10. Somehow I’ve never been to this place before.

Can always drop by on your next visit! If I remember correctly from the menu, the mee kahwin – RM3.50 (cheap – with lots of shrimps and sotong) and the sotong bakar – RM6.00…

  11. It’s been quite sometimes I didn’t go there already. I still missed the Kampung Tao when it is located at the car park near Paramount Hotel. Used to hang out there a lot. After it moved to Taman Harmoni, the once famous ayam panggang and lamb chops from Kampung Tao is gone. Since then, I seldom go there for anything already and the food is not so nice anymore.

Ya, those days I used to go there to buy the terubok panggang…but I didn’t like the lamb chops there then. Since they moved to this new place, this is the first time I’ve been there. Trouble with these Malay stalls, they all sell more or less the same things, so you need to know which one to go to…

the formerly SRC satay stall is a few stalls away from the famous sup power stall. it is run by a teacher (of all people)… he inherit it from his father. the father still there helping to take the orders. i dont know the stall number but if you see Arsenal FC logo then you found it. the teacher name is Mail so just ask for Satay Mail, oh ya he grills the satay in front of the Telco Tower at the car park…;ez to find…

Aiyor, panjang lebar you describe where the stall is. Isn’t it easier to take me there and belanja makan? Or better still…you go and tapao and send to my house, home delivery! Hehehehehe!!!

  13. uu.. this is the first time I heard about mee kahwin.. they do it like char kuey teow style is it?

Not really… Doesn’t taste like that. It’s more like mee mamak or mee kampong, a little bit sweet like they use a bit of sambal. Very nice!

  14. long ago we used to eat chinese mee kahwin at Rejang park-next to the theatre….i think they called it hokkien mee.

Don’t think it’s the same as the Chinese one. This one tastes a lot nicer, I think…like the Malay mee goreng compared to the Chinese msg-laden one (fried mee – dried).

  15. [...] family and friends. There are mostly Chinese stalls at this particular hawker centre, unlike at Taman Harmoni (Harmony Park), but there is a section of Malay stalls selling stuff like satay, barbecued chicken wings and so [...]
