Rantings, ravings & ramblings of a rollicking mind

Send me the pillow that you dream on…

In my younger days, we only had the cone-shaped changs (dumplings) but I did hear at the time, that the Cantonese had big ones that looked like pillows. Lately, these are available here too and I have had a few before this. Somebody was saying the other day that it seems the other dialects also have changs in this shape e.g. the Hakkas.

Well, it was the Duanwu Jie or the Chang Festival aka the Dragon Boat Festival last Thursday, but we did not bother to have anything fancy for the occasion. After all, my daughter would not be home for the holidays till the following day – Friday. So, in keeping with the tradition of the festival,  I went out and bought two pillow changs – one for myself and one for my missus…

Pillow chang 1

They were RM5.00 each but they were huge – 2 or 3 times bigger than the normal changs and there were a lot of things inside…

Pillow chang 2

…meat, slices of lap cheong (Chinese sausage), peanuts, yam, shitake, chestnuts and so on…

Pillow chang 3

It was very delicious and there was so much of it that my missus could not finish the whole thing.

My daughter came back the next day, so I cooked the giant prawns from Kpenyu for her, the same way I cooked them the last time – baked with garlic, butter and milk sauce…

STP's baked cheese & butter prawns 1

Those of you who have not seen my earlier post would probably be unaware as to how huge those prawns actually were…

They were so big that my daughter was already full after eating…just one!

These were the XL-sized ones – 4 or 5 in one ice pack. I still have some more in the freezer – L-sized ones, smaller but 10 in one pack. I think I will cook those before my daughter goes back to that God-forsaken place once her holidays come to an end in three weeks’ time. Perhaps I should try a different recipe – tom yam or curry. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Incidentally, I was caught in this massive traffic jam on my way to the airport that morning to pick my daughter. There was some kind of Road Safety Awareness Campaign going on and guess what I saw in the local English daily the following day…

Three-on-one

Good grief! Were they blind or what? There were THREE on the motorcycle…and they just nonchalantly and routinely gave out the free gifts and did not even notice that a traffic offence had been commited. Such recalcitrant offenders should be nabbed on the spot!!! I really wonder why they bothered to hold such campaigns – all for the sake of doing something, a mere formality, when something like this was happening right under their very noses! A sheer total waste of time and money, I must say! Tsk!! Tsk!!!

  1. andrew bought a zhang last nite from the asian grocery, au4.50 lol!!

i had prawns during my steamboatdinner wid frens last nite. they ok. not reali a fan of prawns tho

$4.50!!! That’s around RM15.00. Hope it tasted great! Hahahahaha!!!

  2. I guess I’m early today, eh? Hehehe!!! Woke up early to wash Chipmunk’s car before the guy come back :P Also before the sun comes out.

I didn’t celebrate chang festival also because unfortunately I started to lose appetite on that day. Hahahaha!!! Anyway, was okay yesterday, went for laksa for breakfast summore. Heh! :D

Wah! Caught in the act summore. In the newspaper summore. The plate number so clear. Can’t the police just check with JPJ and send a summon to the guy or something? Got photo evidence already what. The tua liap lang can be witness also :P Tsk! Tsk! (Neh, just like the case of some police force’s formal dinner where telur penyu being served. What happened ar? No sound liao.) Oh well.

That tua liap lang did not seem to notice at all, so busy posing for the reporters! Show face only! Where got any real concern for road safety?

  3. Diversity! Love them! They are really good! Poor Susan. But after she got through the audition, Simon said he’ll sign her a record deal whether she wins or not. So it doesn’t really matter if she lost. Love her 1st audition the best still.

I think she’s better in the final – more confident, more expressive… Well, it was a variety show and I guessed a lot of people (young people especially) felt Diversity was great…but that was their moment…and that was it, unless they end up as backup dancers for some singer like Madonna or somebody. For Susan, I bet this is just the beginning…

  4. I still prefer the triangle ‘chang’to the pillow ones. LOL! Poor kid sandwiched in between in the pic. Hope he/she is not suffocated!Tom Yam prawns in soup or fry with beehoon with tomyampaste also yummy!n no thank you,I don’t need you to send me the pillow that you dream (wet or dry)on….hehehe!!

For me, the nyonya chang will always be No. 1. Don’t worry, not going to send you my pillow! Won’t get past customs! They’ll think I’m sending you some belacan… Hahahahaha!!!

  5. HAHAHAH FAIL FAIL FAIL! LOL BLINDNESS

    You have great eyes, cikgu.

You think I’m so old already…eyesight failing! No way, I still don’t need spectacles! LOL!!

  6. Notice the kid is really squashed in the middle. The parents probably thought “Si liaw this time, sure kena saman” but instead they are given a prize! Malaysia Boleh!

And just when I was about three or four cars away from the VIP stand, they decided to call it a day! Chesh!!! Got stuck in the jam all for nothing! Hahahahahaha!!!

  7. Another thing…his helmet is not SIRIM standard!

Yalor…and I understand they do not allow this turtle type of helmet anymore!

  8. Wah lau! Pity the kid, he’s been compressed

They should have taken a bus…or one of them could have stayed at home. What wonderful role models the parents are to the kid!

  9. sigh.. i missed this year’s dumpling again… sigh sigh sigh x 100… here no people know how to do!

Cheer up, doc! You’ve completed your studies…and should be coming home anytime soon. Then you can have all the changs you want! May get free supplies from the pretty nurses some more! Wink! Wink! LOL!!!

  10. i really missed my grandma’s nyonya chang. nobody seemed to know how to make em nowadays. :( the ones in melaka is total crap. cheers

Be thankful! We can’t get any nyonya ones here but thank God my friend made and gave me some. They’re available commercially only in Kuching…and no complaints since we can’t make our own. Beggars can’t be choosers!

  11. Not biased, but my mum’s nyonya chang is the best, with chestnuts aplenty. Have not had in a while, as she has been “malas” last few years, but “rajin” to source around, with same conclusion “kark su, liaw bey kow chey”…hehe.

Worst chang ever – the hakka types in KK – oily like anything, even the glutinous rice is oily. When you bite into it, you’ll find beans and peanuts amidst one glob of belly pork fat, minus the meat itself…uek!

Nyonya chang in the stall at Takashimaya basement is very nice though..will eat next week..hehe.

I’ve tried the Takashimaya ones – they’re very nice…but normally, I would just buy the ones at Centrepoint at the entrance of Cold Storage as it was closer to THE “cheap” Supreme Hotel in the Orchard Road area where we would usually stay. Very nice too!

  12. heh! Even managed to find bak chang here in Perth! Gleefully pounced on 1 when I saw them for sale in the Asian grocer shop. Rather big chang for au$2.50, but alas, just doesn’t taste as nice as nyonya change wrapped in pandan leaves. The glutinous rice was rather salty but at least there was chestnut and some chunks of pork. As I was walking out the door, I heard another customer ask if they had nyonya chang – the answer was, later, in the afternoon. Too bad I was on my way home or I’d have hung around and waited. Hahah!

That’s cheap compared to AUD4.50 in Melbourne, so count your blessings! LOL!!!
